As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

It would be interesting to hear how people update a look.

For example, cardigans are out, oversized sweaters are in.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 30/06/2022 12:29

I don't think blazers are out, it's just the current shape (long-line, a bit baggy) looks frumpy on me.

NaturalScone · 30/06/2022 12:31

worrying about something being dated is a little bit middle aged and...well....dated Grin

MorrisZapp · 30/06/2022 12:33

Everyone saying what's dated must provide a useful alternative, and nobody should invoke their teenage daughter's wardrobe. Mate, she's a teenager.

Me too, I'm a short arse.

What’s the alternative to ballet flats then? If heels are out what do you wear to the pub / meal

Trainers/boots/DMs/sandals. Some people would wear brogues/flat lace up type shoes but not me, they do nothing for chunky cankles.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 30/06/2022 12:37

@StopDontTalkToMe nice trainers and converse would be more in style than ballet pumps

This is the Style and Beauty forum, where we talk about what is in style.

I think you may have got lost on your way to the Policing Other People's Conversations forum.

But surely ‘style’ an individual choice, not dictated to us by a multi billion pound fashion industry. We have a right to wear our own style and to feel comfortable with what we wear. That is my opinion and I will support my fellow women in what ever they felt comfortable wearing. That is not ‘policing’ but having an opinion.

D0lphine · 30/06/2022 12:39

Side partings!

Blueuggboots · 30/06/2022 12:39

I think what should be dated is telling people what they wear is dated. We are all individuals with our own style and tastes and more obviously differing budgets. It is wrong of us as women to tell another woman what she wears is dated, we have no idea what other women are going through in their lives and have no right to comment on their clothes

This ⬆️with bells on!!!!

Snap. What are you supposed to thrown on when it goes cold in the beer garden on a summer’s evening?

Exactly. How can Cardigans be dated? they're not a trend item they're a staple. People have been wearing cardigans since time began and will continue to do so.
The style of cardigan may change according to trends but cardigans are here to stay.

TheMullerLightOwl · 30/06/2022 12:43

Very tight outfits - e.g. skinny jeans and tight crop top. Either wear the skinny jeans with an oversized shirt or wear the crop top with wide leg jeans.

Puffalicious · 30/06/2022 12:45

I like to think I'm acceptable for a 50 year old - have my own style when 'off-duty' but for work in the drier months ballet flats still work for me with longer dresses/ some trousers. Sandals/ DMs wouldnt be right for my workplace and i wear lots of brogues/ loafers but the flats still are v useful (I particularly love both my silver and gold ones as they go with everything). The singular pair of shoes I own that get the most compliments are royal blue, suede pumps with leg lace ups to the ankle- M&S about 3 years ago. So they can't be that bad!

FarFarFarAndAway · 30/06/2022 12:45

So far I've read on here that biker jackets, denim jackets and cardigans are all dated. What do you wear on top of a dress then (or indeed anything) when you go out in the Late Spring, Summer, Early Autumn? Or to keep warm? I haven't seen many jumpers under the circumstances.

I'm mystified as to what some people actually wear...

Rupertpenrysmistress · 30/06/2022 12:46

Oh dear I am clearly very dated. I wear most of these dated items and was feeling quite good. Nevermind I will continue to be dated.

Notmanybroadbeans · 30/06/2022 12:49

Can we please say leather jackets over a floaty viscose print midi dress? I saw that combo recently and remembered how annoying I find it as a suggested mid-season go-to. Is it past its peak?

Daisydoesnt · 30/06/2022 12:54

Tapered trousers
Surely not?

Hurstlandshome · 30/06/2022 12:55

People saying leggings and dresses! That was a trend back in the early 2000's, of course it's outdated now.

Any formal business wear looks so out dated - especially on women. (appreciate those jobs that demand it).

I still love cardigans - but can no longer wear the boxy trend. And to my shame I still like skinny jeans - all the others just look wrong on me!

I wish puff sleeves would die a death. Talking of sleeves, 3 quarter length or cold shouldered (shudders) - very outdated.

Generally overdressing (in the south east) doesn't feel fashion forward but I know in some of the northern city's the girls go to town with what they wear out.

The big bum aesthetic is definitely going (although flat bums like mine weren't playing ball anyway).

And lastly 'leggings and long-tops' never been a trend, but always looks outdated.

Sxxyfing · 30/06/2022 13:03

Vejas
Loved mine but wore them out the other day and they felt clunky and I saw lots of people older than me wearing them which made me feel old

notacooldad · 30/06/2022 13:04

This is the dafetest comment ever. We are on a style and beauty page.
Styles and trends change and this is what the thread is about.
No one is forcing anyone to wear or not wear anything.
It's a discussion about what things have become venerally unfashionable.

To be fair I'm still wearing most of the items but I live in a northern unfashionable town so no one cares anyway!!

JofraArchersFastestBall · 30/06/2022 13:05

I'm sorry. I wasn't meaning to be rude about cardigans. I love them, have a cupboard full and struggle to know what to wear without them... but mine all look wrong on me at the moment. They must be the wrong cut/length/material.... but I'm dammed if I'm buying new ones when I've got a load that are broadly fine. So I'm in cardigan limbo.

Why is it daft? Trends and fashiins are set by clothing companies to make money, not for our benefit.

OceanbreezeSun · 30/06/2022 13:19

Clothing

Skinny jeans
stilettos
Bodycon dresses
Leggings with tunic tops over the top
Anything with an asymmetrical hem or waterfall type shape
Ballet flats - I forgot about these, I’ve not seen anyone wear these for years but do think they look abit dated.

Make up/beauty trends

Overdone lip fillers
big eyebrows
contouring

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 13:22

Cardigan Limbo should definitely be the next British dance craze.

Stravaig · 30/06/2022 13:28

Before reading: this list will include all possible clothing, leaving me naked.
After reading: no-one mentioned pyjamas or wellies. I love you all.
