As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

@5128gap I'm going to have mine dissolved, just like the Kardashians.

shedwithivy · 30/06/2022 14:16

I wish I was less of the sheep... I'll see a couple of cool mums at the school gates and think... ooh, they look nice, maybe I should get one of those, I am not a size 8 so it looks less good on me, and a month later that item is on one of these threads Grin.

So then I think why bother, and stick to my charity shop "working with animals workwear" until I get into work and realise that I look like a younger version of my boss who is fast approaching the hiking trainers, trousers with legs that zip off and fleece with a picture of a wolf on it stage Confused

Waist belts
Fur coats
Gladiator sandals
Manicures with the ring finger a different colour

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 14:27

I'll bet!

$$$$ leisure wear too no doubt.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 30/06/2022 14:29

If you're slim most fashion styles will suit you.
However, style and fashion is not the same thing.
Fashion is an add-on of your particular style.
However, most people have no style so can't follow fashion and tweak it for themselves.

Skinny jeans - forgot that one - lots of people wore them hardly any suited them.

ClaudineClare · 30/06/2022 14:31

Dated and laughable

Laughable? So you laugh at people who wear /do anything on your list? If you follow trends you must have worn or done some of them yourself @IVFPrayingForBioChild?

If you ask me and my ballet pumps (round toe not pointed) laughing at other people's clothing choices is dated, a hark back to a more snobbish era .

ClaudineClare · 30/06/2022 14:34

C'mon @IVFPrayingForBioChild post some pictures of your stylish self, let's see if you really are qualified to judge the rest of us.

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2022 14:37

Maybe knees are making a come back
I wish mine would make a comeback. They've gone very weird looking.

Pippinbird · 30/06/2022 14:39

Scarfs are in- it’s just how you wear them. Check out Rixo

Cardigans are in, think ‘1998’…..Pastels, ribbed etc.

At what point were leggings under dresses/tunics in? I missed that one!

Whats out? Anything that doesn’t look like you’ve had it in the wardrobe years/picked it up at the charity shop. If it looks like you’ve been shopping on the high street recently- then it’s a look that’s definitely out.

NippyWoowoo · 30/06/2022 14:39

Apparently side partings, but I will die on that hill. With my side part.

DFOD · 30/06/2022 14:41

Those floaty “mums night out” type tops with a bit of sequin / stars / layered / from Mint Velvet.

Also All Saints - that middle aged Mum thinking she’s a cool rock chick

Pinkwellies81 · 30/06/2022 14:42

knee high boots over jeans (unless wellies or country boots for dog walking)

cold shoulder tops (I never wore these)

High heels, unless at a fancy function

Leggings with tunics were definitely in around 1986, and under dresses, a bit later, maybe 1990.

MintyGreenDreams · 30/06/2022 14:43

Skinny jeans are the only type that suit me and i love my book like phone case it protects the screen!

ReginaGeorgeismyname · 30/06/2022 14:45

So what is actually in then? After reading this I feel like there are no clothes left!

Tinkletwat · 30/06/2022 14:46

Oh god yes, all the tops Hush and Mint Velvet are still doing with stars on. Looked dated 10 years ago.

weebarra · 30/06/2022 14:48

I find this hard! I'm very short and very fat so this is challenging for me.
In winter dresses and tights are fine but summer is difficult. Also I'm in Scotland so it's never really warm enough for bare legs!
And I have a menopausal tummy and wear prosthetic boobs (thank you BRCA2 gene), so short tees don't work.

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 14:49

Ah thank you, @thenightsky. Yes, I have one then - I just call it a long shirt!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/06/2022 14:50

@w10mum3 I live in NYC, can confirm everyone is wearing $$$$ leisurewear. Often with lots of yellow gold jewellery as per a PP. Co-ords are also very in right now. Like this or this or this worn with Birks or ruinously expensive espadrilles.

As for dated. I think super high heels and bodycon are done - that includes skinny jeans and jeggings.

Squiff70 · 30/06/2022 14:50

I'm past caring. A couple of months ago I ventured into a Peacocks store (Heaven forbid - I always thought it was for much older people and frump city on a par with Bon Marche). I was literally killing time before an appointment with limited shops available to dive into to dodge the heavy rain showers and thought I'd hide in the children's section whilst pretending to look at stuff for my toddler.

My eyes lit up when I saw a ladies blue cardigan. My grandma would have described the colour as 'periwinkle'. I absolutely LOVED it. It was soooooo grannified and would normally be seen on ladies over 80, but bollocks to that! I bought it and have worn my granny cardi a number of times since!

No one seems willing to say. It would be useful if everytime someone said a thing was dated they added the non dated alternative and told us what they wear instead.

You too? I no longer recognise mine. Very odd looking. They work ok as knees, just look weird.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 30/06/2022 14:52

@ClaudineClare
Post pictures of yourself.

This thread was about what is dated and if I find something dated and laughable then I can internally, I'm hardly going to do it to someone's face.

I'm not telling people what to wear, I don't care what others wear but I can still have a view on whether I think it's dated or not.

Unless family, I wouldn't tell others what I think of their clothes or styles in real life.
Just as I would comment on their religion, sexuality, career, home, area they live in - everyone has a viewpoint on everything, best to air it on an anonymous forum than in real life.

We're only talking about style and fashion here not people's sins or good deeds.

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 14:53

I've just bought two longline ribbed cardigans from Lipsy (so not really expensive) - They are thin so flattering.
