What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Belts! Ballet flats.

Apprentice-style business wear.

SkeletonFight · 30/06/2022 10:55

Vejas or look alikes

What’s the alternative to ballet flats then? If heels are out what do you wear to the pub / meal

Ballet flats are not dated. They are a classic. Cheap ones look shit, but then they always have.

astoundedgoat · 30/06/2022 10:56

Eyeliner on lower lid - gone.

Agree that the cropped cardigan is still fine so long as it is pastel and chunky but also slouchy (see: lilac cardigan from Rouje), especially with wide legged jeans or cottagecore florals.

Oddly with cleavage on show - dated on adult/older women, yes, but all the rage with teens and under 25’s, weirdly. I live in a university town and both the “basic” teens and, unusually, the edgy undergrads are showing a LOT of boob this summer - way more than before. No leg though. Makes me quite nostalgic for my pre-breastfeeding shape!

I was just thinking cardigans are in, pastel, soft, but chunky striped and patterns.

Maybe it's just where I am !

I love long line cardigans, not short ones.

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 11:00

I have no skinny jeans now.

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 11:01

The only non flat shoes I wear at the moment are tan wedges.

Gufo · 30/06/2022 11:05

I used to like the following, but they feel wrong (on me) now: indoor scarfs, statement necklaces, skinny jeans, ballet flats.

HairyMcLarie · 30/06/2022 11:05

Things 'cinched' in at the waist with a belt.

Unless it's on someone rake thin without an ounce of fat it makes people (me) look like a monkey nut

HelenHywater · 30/06/2022 11:06

I'm finding my midi dresses (probably bought 2019 and before) are the wrong length now. They just look too short now.

And yes shoes. It's really hard to know what to wear, so I'm just wearing my old trainers most of the time. from my experience though, people do wear heels on nights out - albeit those block or platform sandals (I don't have any).

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 30/06/2022 11:13

Knee high boots with jeans tucked in
Knee length wrap dresses
Overly long, overly tonged wag style hair
Skinny jeans
Heels with jeans

Astrabees · 30/06/2022 11:18

Denim jackets, in any colour, over skinny jeans or jean type trousers. I was talking to someone earlier this week who was very "well turned out" white trainers, skinny jeans style trousers, white denim jacket, ditsy print blouse. After initially thinking "you look smart" i looked again and felt this look is very dated now and the jeans and jacket are a look I only see the over 55s wearing as a uniform.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 30/06/2022 11:19

Talking as a woman in early 40’s who’s been aware of what makes me look frumpy and dated, this is my list.

lack of eyebrows, not huge ‘slugs’ but some definition is very flattering.
Eyeliner under eye.
Matt foundation.
Too long hair.
Pandora bracelets.
Fitted cardigans/blazers/jackets.
Skirts/dresses sitting on your knee, midi length is way flattering.
Knee high boots.

with foundation I try to tread a middle ground between matte and dewy. Matte is ageing but dewy can just make people look greasy. I like a glowy skin like finish.

Maxi dresses with white trainers and a short denim jacket
Looking around my office and in Costa this morning, that look is still very popular where I live!

I'm still looking.

Cir · 30/06/2022 11:38

I loved leggings under dresses because it was a brilliant mid-point between full tights (can get very hot and yeasty) and bare legs (can get very cold and my legs are shit).

I agree that the look is very very dated now but I miss it.

I think this look will last the summer but be very dated by next. I still see a lot of young cool women wearing it but as soon as us ‘oldies’ latch on they stop 😫

Tunics with leggings

ChinBristles · 30/06/2022 11:54

Biker jacket over an evening dress
Fake fur (real fur obviously a complete no-no)

Snap. What are you supposed to thrown on when it goes cold in the beer garden on a summer’s evening?
