As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

You can prise my cardigans out of my cold dead hands.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I love my cardigans.

I follow these threads with interest, I’m not a follower of fashion by any means. I loathe clothes shopping, shoe shopping even more, so I tend to hold on to my clothes for years until they fall apart - or I get too fat to wear them - whatever comes first. I have teen DDs who like to regularly tell me where I’m going wrong!

amatsip · 30/06/2022 11:59

Heavy make up which makes you look like someone who is catfishing.
trout pouts
heavy tan

Soapy · 30/06/2022 12:00

Inverted bob
Rimless glasses
Big boho/dream catcher/chandelier earrings
Embroidery fabric bags
Gems on nails
Threaded arched thin eyebrows

Russian lips, BBL and very big fake breasts... people are dissolving a lot of fillers going for more natural look

Facial piercings apart from nose
Tattoo (mandala) under/between the bust or bows on back of thigh or feet

Smoking a real cigarette, double points if it's wrap ups.
Super white veneered teeth, again going for more natural shape and shade

Rose gold and silver jewellery: yellow gold is more fashionable.. tough luck if it doesn't suit your tone! (or just ignore it!)

Normal length tops that reach your hip. It's all cropped now pretty much even thick jumpers cropped (where is the logic of cold stomach? I guess you pair it with high waisted jeans and thats how you cover the stomach up)

Fast fashion is dated.. going to Primark and buying loads of clothes that may be on trend but all just cheap polyester falling apart stitching looks so pre Covid to me. Clothes are more classic, more expensive, maybe second hand but more thoughtfully chosen and looked after. Capsule wardrobe where things mix and match (neutrals) and of the best quality you can afford reflects the current climate more (environment, inflation, comfort and practicality, working from home etc)

outshinethemorningsun · 30/06/2022 12:02

Definitely knee-high boots or the ones that
come up mid-calf, especially over skinny jeans.

bodycon and bandage style dresses with tall heels on nights out

those big buns on the top of your head, messy mum buns etc. Seemed to be all the rage for a good few years but disappearing now.

Big HD eyebrows and lots of filler, even with the ‘influenced’ types seem to be falling out of fashion, everyone has those weird brushed brows now

ParrotsAteThemAll · 30/06/2022 12:05

Big bums. Apparently the Khardashians are having their big arses dissolved, I fear we’re heading back to the early naughties and size zero!

Ballet flats are not dated. They are a classic. Cheap ones look shit, but then they always have.

I would say they are ‘outdated’ in the sense that 15 years ago ballet flats were very popular with teens whereas a lot wouldn’t touch them now.

i personally like ballet flats though as I’m not overly bothered what is ‘in’ for the younger crowd, definitely a classic in my eyes.

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant
What foundation works best for you?
I'm still looking.

For me, the Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation gives me this finish. Glow without the grease!

puffalo · 30/06/2022 12:07

So much

  • leggings

  • tunics

  • mid length cardigans (not cropped or maxi)

  • skinny jeans

  • form fitting t shirts and sweatshirts

  • layering long beaded necklaces

  • ballet flats

  • boots with a wide calf style fit that aren’t over the knee

  • cotton cami tops that aren’t cropped

  • one shoulder dresses

  • peplum anything

  • sperm brows

  • mismatched foundation to skin tone

  • tattoos that were done with minimal artistic ability from the “artist”

I think what should be dated is telling people what they wear is dated. We are all individuals with our own style and tastes and more obviously differing budgets. It is wrong of us as women to tell another woman what she wears is dated, we have no idea what other women are going through in their lives and have no right to comment on their clothes

Primatrying · 30/06/2022 12:11

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

UnityO · 30/06/2022 12:12

Could shoulder tops!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 30/06/2022 12:15

YY to maxi dresses with denim jacket and white trainers, because it's become such a cliché.

Other things that I think look dated on me (early 50s), though I'm not saying other people can't make them work:

Longline cardigans (sorry, @AnnaFF 😉)
Longline blazers - they look amazing on taller women, but make me look like the chairwoman of a WI, circa 1988. Ditto anything double-breasted.
White trainers, especially Vejas
Jeans - no longer look stylish and I have replaced with smart joggers for going out, though I live in jeans at home
Knee-length skirts
Leather biker jackets and denim jackets - because they have been forced down the throats of middle-aged women as the key to looking on trend, to the point that they are now naff. Their time will come again..
Mulberry handbags - suburban cliché
Tunics - have never suited me, as a short-arse, but they have been over-exposed in the last few years too

Knee length boots with a skirt that leaves my knees showing

Yes! And I used to love this look.

I remember reading a quote about the 80s and it had a photo of people in long sleeved tshirts and ripped jeans saying 'remember to dress like your knees are the sexiest part of your body'

Luxa · 30/06/2022 12:18

Cold shoulder tops
Waterfall cardigans
Heels (thank goodness)
Slug eyebrows
Floaty scarves
Blue hair (very overdone now)

Love my skinny jeans though, as I look larger in other styles.

What to wear over a dress if it's a bit cold remains a conundrum. Cardigans are usually too short, too woolly or have no button and just hang open. Jackets are too 'job interview on the Apprentice'.

MorrisZapp · 30/06/2022 12:20

I went into town last November in my trusty khaki parka. I felt like Liam Gallagher at a kid's birthday party. That shade and shape of coat is so dated now. I bought a lighter, more puffy style and feel more current in that.

This for me too, I dress in styles I like & couldn't give a single solitary shit if followers of fashion are judging.

No offense taken 😁

You did make me laugh about the longline blazers.

I agree about the denim jacket. I met up with 3 Friends and they all had a denim jacket on.

MorrisZapp · 30/06/2022 12:22

Still love my denim jacket in summer though. What's a current alternative?

I think we will all have to agree to disagree on the denim jacket and cardigan as if not we'll all be freezing.

OompaLoompaa · 30/06/2022 12:24

Over the knee boots
Boden/sea salt knee length stuff.

3peassuit · 30/06/2022 12:24

If denim jackets, cardigans and blazers are out what can we wear if it’s a bit chilly? I have a pashmina at the back of my wardrobe somewhere, have they been out long enough to back in?

This is the Style and Beauty forum, where we talk about what is in style.

I think you may have got lost on your way to the Policing Other People's Conversations forum.

I'm 54 and wear whatever I like including cardis. So does my 25 year old dd.

I still wear blazers too.

MichaelAndEagle · 30/06/2022 12:27

I think a short cropped jumper can look good over a dress.
