What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Still also wearing skinny jeans. Need them for dog walking especially, because of the wet grass.

I suspect that the "skinny jeans are out posters" live in London or a city and therefore don't undestand that wide leg trousers don't work in wet weather or rural areas when walking in mud/wet grass/puddles.

lightisnotwhite · 03/07/2022 22:18

I don’t think heels are dated. Pictures from Wimbledon have the famous’s wearing them. Vogue Williams is wearing kitten heeled mules with shorts whilst pushing a buggy.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/07/2022 23:18

MN always says heels are soooo dated, even though they're on sale everywhere and worn all over the red carpet. I think what a lot of these people mean is that THEY don't wear them any more.

But that's what the thread's about; what people think.

To be fair, it was also about what posters had worn in the past but saw as dated now, but that ship has sailed.

lightisnotwhite · 04/07/2022 06:41

It doesn’t matter how dated things get. They invariably come round again at some point. Surely everyone knows this by now?
I remember a conversation in the 80’s with a teacher who told me skinnies would be out one day. Teen me laughed as they would NEVER be out. Sure enough the 90’s arrived with boot cuts and cargos and no one could imagine why we ever liked drainpipes.
I remember many magazine articles in the late 90’s saying denim jeans would never come back. They just looked wrong. Until a few years later when they didn’t again.
So pack up the card is and tunic dresses for 2030..

I think what should be dated is telling people what they wear is dated. We are all individuals with our own style and tastes and more obviously differing budgets. It is wrong of us as women to tell another woman what she wears is dated, we have no idea what other women are going through in their lives and have no right to comment on their clothes

👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻 100% couldn’t agree with ya more! X

eglantine7 · 04/07/2022 08:05

I think some people are getting very serious.
Of course one doesn't judge women on their dress!!! You'd have to be a pretty shallow person to do that. There are so many stylish people I have no interest in getting to know. Likewise lots who don't care or who wear dated clothes who are great to know.
I thought a fun thread about what we think is dated when we go shopping. Too much overthinking and touchiness here.
X

Good point about skinny jeans/ dog walking and mud. Just think skinny has currently had its day as a fashion item. The styles back in are similar to those of the late 90s ( baggy/ wide legged/ flared) and (shockingly) the early 2000s with the low slung jeans - only the youth can get away with this (IMHO horrible) look and many will be shunning it anyway.

There are lots of people who own dogs in London too by the way and will wear similar clothes to those in the country. We are lucky to live by a common.

Scraping hair back into a bun or ponytail, which I am very guilty of doing

What's wrong with that one? Almost everyone eryone I know , all ages, with shoulder length hair or longer does that . It's just another way of wearing long hair. What should they be doing?

I was thinking of the super tight, slicked back, peel off your forehead type ponytail. As opposed to a messy bun, which will have its day soon probably, but still seems to be the preferred option right now.

Squiff70 · 04/07/2022 09:03

I like to think that the fashion is that there IS no fashion! Literally anything goes and it's completely socially acceptable to wear whatever the Hell we like (thinking back to the PP who mentioned they'd seen a lady in a pastle unicorn dress and converse). See also those who dress in a Gothic style. Our likes and dislikes are part of what makes us all human.

faffadoodledo · 04/07/2022 09:11

Just wear it well. Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence and an 'I don't give a..' attitude.
I think it was me who may have raised the denim jacket and dress thing, because While they're a summer staple for me, I sense I'm in a diminishing demographic. Won't stop me though.

apintortwo · 04/07/2022 11:15

I don't understand the 'only wear a scarf if you are cold' guideline.

Surely it's only the wearer who can determine if they are cold or not. How can the fashionistas assess if the look is outdated or not then? 😆

sunglassesonthetable · 04/07/2022 12:05

Can we comment on clothes though?

Generally.

But this is style and beauty 🥴 The OP asked what is dated, aimed at people who are interested in fashion trends. It’s not the place for those that don’t care about fashion and happily wear any old thing as long as they’re comfortable.

"Style and Beauty"- not "In Fashion and Beauty"

"In fashion" does not equate to style; particularly if "in fashion" means "widely popular" She'll suits were hugely popular briefly- is anyone going to argue they were stylish. Or pre- ripped jeans? Might be the height of fashion but stylish?

There's a big difference between not caring about fashion trends and "happily wearing any old thing as long as they’re comfortable"

sunglassesonthetable · 04/07/2022 13:39

Agreed.

But can fashion trends be discussed?

Blossomtoes · 04/07/2022 17:12

It doesn’t matter how dated things get. They invariably come round again at some point

But never quite the same. There are always subtle or not so subtle differences that mean the first iteration does look dated.

sunglassesonthetable · 04/07/2022 18:45

Going to answer my own question. 😉

Of course fashion trends can be discussed in Style & Beauty! 😁 ( Despite the Board not actually being labelled Fashion & Beauty )

The frothing reaction is tedious though. And so defensive.

The difference between Style and Fashion is a whole thread in itself.

Haha tell my 20 year old daughter that. She's completely raided my wardrobe of the old stuff I loved and never threw away. She has loads of comments asking where she got her clothes. Tbf though I probably would look dated if I tried wearing them .

catfunk · 04/07/2022 19:37

I can't think of anything recent but ditzy prints and cowboy boots of around 15 years ago, waist belts over dresses etc

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 04/07/2022 20:21

I think what dates some women is hairstyles. I saw someone the other day dressed in a tea dress and white trainers with a denim jacket. Much discussed on here. She looked fine, other than she had an old fashioned helmet hairstyle that emphasised her age and made the outfit look not quite right.

Oh deary dear. I found my waist again about 3 years ago when I lost a load of weight. So I wear belts whenever I can!

This is always bought up but I think it’s less true now. 60’s and 70’s clothes were very different in terms of materials etc.
A 90’s cotton crop top and a 2022 one are indistinguishable. Levi 501’s are still the unflattering jeans they always were.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 05/07/2022 08:20

I don't know about looking fated, but I've seen several women in boots and thick tights - in July - and one in a parka with fur hood.
