As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Dd is the last word on equal rights and doesn’t see why her male friends can run around comfortably looking great and yet women ( not her generation.) are confined to horrendously painful, damaging footwear to ‘look good’
look good for what? Who says it looks good?
it doesn’t look good at all
confident young women don’t need bondage on their feet to feel and look fantastic - hallelujah for that!

Good for her. For a while I was worried that attitude got abandoned at some point in 1996.

Maybe point out to her that “hooker” is not a feminist word, though?

ReneBumsWombats · 02/07/2022 14:28

If I saw someone dressed in high heels I would assume they were a sex worker

No you wouldn't, unless you were a blithering idiot, which I'm sure you're not.

Benjispruce4 · 02/07/2022 14:29

High heels =Sex worker??? What planet are you from? 😂

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 14:36

According to my dd17 heels are for old women and hookers.

I can’t actually imagine many youngsters under the age of 30 wearing ‘heels’ so yes they do look very dated. Embarrassing even.

You might want to have a word with your feminist daughter about her judgemental attitude to other women and the use of the word "hooker"

A planet where apparently referring to "hookers" is evidence of feminist credentials.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 14:42

Both of those are confident and powerful women with their own sense of style. They don't rely on the opinions of others to validate their choices.

I suppose the ultimate in women dressing with their own sense of style is the Queen .

I don't see it as about personal validation though, but creating a great uniform that really works for them.

eglantine7 · 02/07/2022 14:43

Agree. That kind of attitude does feminism a disservice 😑

High heels look dated, not slutty.
Crop tops are and those are fine with young people but heels look try hard and uncomfortable. It's not about modesty but comfort, maybe??

Strong, confident women have always dressed for themselves and no one else. I certainly have.

Benjispruce4 · 02/07/2022 14:46

@Provenceinthesummer plenty if young women wear heels. They might not be court shoe type heels but strappy heels are very much in evidence depending on the occasion. Just been to my DD’s graduation and nearly all wore high heels to the ceremony. All around 21, intelligent and definitely not sex workers.

Benjispruce4 · 02/07/2022 14:47

@Provenceinthesummer I’m for heels/ trainers/ flats or whatever a woman wants to wear. I’m questioning the association with a sex worker.

Floisme · 02/07/2022 15:05

All these posts about how women should stop trying so hard, and be more strong and confident and dress for themselves ignore the fact that many do exactly that, and then they reach a stage in their lives where their 'uniform' stops working for them. It might be a different lifestyle - maybe one they hadn't chosen, or a body change (because sometimes, you think you've figured out what suits you... and then you realise it doesn't). And yes sometimes it's just boredom and fashion but it can still be discombobulating, especially if confidence is already low for other reasons.

And so sometimes we talk about it on this board. Of course there are more important things going on in the world but you know what, I would never dream of going onto a motoring or a holidays or a pets thread to yell 'Who Cares!' because I realise there are people who do care, and that's fine, or at least it should be.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 02/07/2022 15:07

I went to a wedding recently where nearly all the women wore heels - and many were in their 20s and early 30s. I didn't because I have 3 young DC and it's just not practical! Also most of the parents of my 5yo's class are in their 20s and all wear leggings, skinny jeans and tons of the stuff mentioned on here. I must live in a very unfashionable place Grin

Chrispackhamspoodle · 02/07/2022 15:09

I have to wear shoes at work and in summer only ballet flats work.I have leopard print and silver ones and they go with everything.I wouldn't wear them out of work now though. They do look dated and don't go with the style of jeans I wear now.
I think denim jackets are timeless though.

Going back to make up, what are those of us with very few lower eyelashes left (menopause) supposed to do if eyeliner below the eyes is outdated? It's the only way to get any sort of eye definition.

I would suggest a soft taupe or light brown buffed on the outer edges only, with a soft brush. So from below pupil to where your top and bottom lashes meet, may I also suggest using dark eyeshadows to line your upper eye rather than liner. I find eye liner so harsh and I'm dark haired. It's just a softer more flattering look on any age.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 02/07/2022 15:10

The youth are all wearing cycling shorts under dresses /t shirts and that's a look I can embrace.Especially if I go to a concert or festival and wear a dress.

What a vile thing to say about another woman @Nothappyatwork . Would you also say Kate Middleton is "old" and a "hooker"?

I do think Kate Middleton’s style is quite old for her age, I guess it’s classic but it’s not a style I see many women her age wearing.

That's a fair enough observation, it is the "hooker" part that is vile.

How do you know Kate was only after William's money @Nothappyatwork ? Maybe she actually loves him.

Or where you think they ought to dress for you.

We all know you're lying about thinking heels = sex workers, so why bother? Do you think it's funny? Is your excellent taste constantly going inexplicably unappreciated?

Sorry, I may have derailed a bit, but calling women "hookers" raises my hackles.

I remain confused.
