As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Two is precisely the amount of fucks I couldn’t give about your teenager’s opinion 🙄

@sunglassesonthetable - why oh why don't people actually read threads fully. I was agreeing with someone else that a person judging those who have phone book cases is a twat - but you didn't have a go at them, only me! However, I actually think anyone who judges other people on what they wear is a twat. I am not "riled up", and I most certainly do own my choices, and once again, I couldn't care less what a 15 year old judges anyone on.

Incidentally, the reason we are not all walking around with fob watches is surely because someone came up with a better, more practical idea - nothing to do with fashion!

ForsterMcLennan · 02/07/2022 21:31

This thread amuses me as someone who has always been very into fashion. So many observations that aren’t quite right. For instance, skinny jeans haven’t been cool for at least ten years I’d say. So no need to comment on that, it’s a given. But it’s missing the point to say that denim and biker jackets aren’t in. Denim jackets are very on point for spring/summer (though not for me, they don’t look right) and bikers suddenly look very cool again and work nicely after the over saturation of the blazer. Although confusingly the blazer is still good to wear; you just need to make sure you have the right one with the perfect fit that isn’t cheap looking. I’d like to add also that we are at peak Ganni, especially the short sleeved T-shirts/crossbody bags/seersucker dresses, though lots of their stuff is still very covetable. And yes, Vejas need to do one please.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/07/2022 21:36

I saw a young woman today who was quite large, wearing a Lindy Bop dress in shades of unicorn (think lilac, pastel yellow, pale pink) with unicorns on and a net petticoat that made her look bigger, huge white hi-tops with frilly ankle socks, several tattoos, she had unicorn-shades in her hair and was wearing a headband that had rainbow horns on it, pink glittery make up and prosthetic pixie ears. This for walking around shopping in Ripon. I don't know if she is dated or in, but I don't think she gave a rat's backside!

Lol. Love it.

My dad always used to say that women that wore anklets were hookers.

Your dad sounds like a good man...

😂

I'd say that round here people are either very uncool, don't care or are just practical. Walking dogs in the wet countryside calls for something that can be tucked into boots, hence the majority of people still wear skinny jeans.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 22:03

@onlythreenow apologies for only having a go at you.

Can't agree with that. Cost, technology, mechanisation AND fashion. It all feeds into each other. Apple watches look different to a watch made in the 20s.

I’ll take the Vogue fashion editor’s advice in this April ‘22 article on denim over yours, “Do skinny jeans ever really go out of style? Quick answer: No”.

www.vogue.com/article/best-high-waisted-jeans/amp

Skinnies are a classic, who cares if they’re ‘cool’? Try hards, wannabes and the achingly trendy. All of which thankfully I am none of.

ReneBumsWombats · 02/07/2022 22:59

I'm not sure who the authority is on what's in style. It turns on a dime and it isn't always what everyone is wearing (isn't that about the time someone starts something new in order to be edgy, forward looking and trendsetting?). If Fashionista X is snapped wearing something that's not officially "in", doesn't she usually start setting the trend there and then even though nobody's wearing it yet?

It's not exactly a firm, objective thing with a litmus test, is it? If it were, we wouldn't always have such disagreement about it.

We all think we're the arbiters of good taste.

And for what it's worth, I've just passed a few groups of young women on nights out. They were all wearing short dresses and strappy sandals with high heels. I suppose it's possible that my area has become a den of incredibly passé sin. I can hope.

And I would give zero fucks about that as long as she was happy and content being herself. Each to their own! They say life would be boring if we all liked the same things and it seems like such a cliché but it's so true.

Maaaaaaany years ago I read a quote: "If it harm none, do what ye will". It stuck with me.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 03/07/2022 00:22

This thread has just confirmed that old classic; fashion does not always equal style.

I will hold onto it all from now. The things I could have passed on to my daughter too

britinnyc · 03/07/2022 01:22

I was shopping today so took a look around the shoe department in a higher end department store- lots of heels, mostly mule/slide style so no straps at the ankle. Chunky wood sole or regular platform sandals, trainers galore and millions of Birkenstocks and Dad sandals. So a real mix. Didn’t see any ballet flats even though I have also read they are on trend again. They had some wary autumn stuff too - looks like chunky slightly lug soles boots with a bit of a chunky heel are going to be big, I approve of those, give me height but are easy to walk in!

Although if one were looking at style rather than fashion the fob watch beats the generic lump of plastic that is an Apple watch with no contest.

SummertimeTremdendous · 02/07/2022 18:57

I don't really think that was worth sharing.

I'm tempted to go out tomorrow wearing either my terribly dated ballet flats or my terribly dated heels and and ankle bracelet.

I see that that the same person who declared this thread to be pointless (but happy to list the things she disliked) is still here getting irate...

hatchyu · 03/07/2022 06:49

We all think we're the arbiters of good taste.

This is true & obviously good taste cannot exist without bad taste!

Springersandchampers · 03/07/2022 07:08

This! 🙌🏼

Springersandchampers · 03/07/2022 07:12

Loved reading through this. Denim jackets with dresses (or anything for that matter) are still very much a thing .. and double denim isn’t going anywhere fast.

Don’t take any offence from this thread. Just wear what makes you feel good 💞

TitaniasAss · 03/07/2022 07:24

I was at a posh wedding yesterday and I was the only guest not in heels apart from the bride's grandma! I felt a bit out of place.

Delatron · 03/07/2022 07:38

I think weddings and posh events are different.

Night out: no heels.

I would only wear heels to: wedding/ black tie ball/Ascot type affair.

hatchyu · 03/07/2022 07:53

Just to add over the knee boots were back on the AW catwalks 😆
