As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

I've actually got my eye on some wooden platform style sandals, very 70s but also early 00s. The leather straps are pistachio green! Wear would I wear them? And would people think I'm a hooker? 😂

They sound fabulous- I've just bought a gorgeous pair of green and orange strappy sandals that (gasp) have a heel. I intend to wear them as much as possible, they are the first pair of heels I've bought in ages.

I don't think that there is one true fashion now. In the sense that pretty everyone wears clothes of a similar style and those who don't stick out. Like in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

We have had an increasing materialistic society for the last 50 years. With increases in technology and turnover of fashions. The parameters of what's fashionable and not seems to get wider and wider and the difference between the truly stylish and not gets less obvious.

I see the kids choose which era they want to dress from: punks, grunge, 70s, 80s. It is like fancy dress day everyday for them round us. (Although the default seems to be borrowed from the 80s.)

The difference between the stylish and not seems (over the age of 25) to be an obvious care over choosing your outfit instead of throwing on cheap, poorly fitting clothes.

Just to add over the knee boots were back on the AW catwalk

Yay I can bring out my 5050s again. Who am I kidding, I wear them every winter at least once 😄

Although if one were looking at style rather than fashion the fob watch beats the generic lump of plastic that is an Apple watch with no contest.

Apple watches aren’t made of plastic Confused

Thank you. I'm waiting on a flight to refund me my money. If they do I'll buy them! 😃

We all think we're the arbiters of good taste.

This is true & obviously good taste cannot exist without bad taste!

And it's also worth noting how often stars on the red carpet wear some elaborate creation by one of the biggest names in the business, only for everyone to fall about laughing at how stupid it looks.

Princess Beatrice's Royal Wedding hat, anyone? And that was by Philip Treacy, who is described by Vogue as "perhaps the greatest living milliner".

Besides, doesn't it depend on context? High fashion isn't designed to be worn in real life. It's a wearable art display.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/07/2022 09:25

I've just remembered a conversation I once had with a professional model. She said that designers generally live in black. She certainly did.

I thought that was very interesting.

“Healthy feet” aren’t designed to walk on concrete whilst clawing the toes to stop pumps with a low vamp slipping off.

It’s not about healthy feet. It’s about choosing a shoe style which suits the foot’s shape. Someone who finds ballet flats comfortable probably has slightly flat feet and will have none of the problems experienced by someone with high arches in the same shoes.

I have at least three pairs of those!

RampantIvy · 03/07/2022 09:50

@ThanksItHasPockets there is a reason that podiatrist hate ballet flats. They might feel comfortable, but they still aren't good for the feet.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/07/2022 10:10

Interesting. I have a couple of pairs of ballet flats but while I'm fine in them for a day, it's true I don't find them the MOST comfortable shoes, despite them being flat...and yes, I do have high arches.

I didn’t say they were. I was responding to the poster who said they don’t think feet need support. The chances are they have a foot shape less likely to be permanently damaged by certain shoe styles.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/07/2022 10:48

But what is "obvious care"? How do you know how much they thought about it, and what if their thought process doesn't match yours?

It's like the "natural makeup" look that requires 25 minutes and 12 products.

Floisme · 03/07/2022 10:52

Popping back with another cheer for the poster who coined the phrase about clothes 'turning on you.' I can't find the post now otherwise I'd name check you but I've already quoted it on another thread! I think it absolutely nails that moment where fashion, change in body, change in lifestyle and sheer fickleness all intersect.

Wednesdayafternoon · 03/07/2022 11:35

I love this thread! It's made me realise that I'm not happy in what I'm wearing, I feel dated and maybe it's because I am! Anyway I've done a massive online order hall and gonna try out some new styles! Thanks all, bye bye skinny jeans 😀😀😀

Gwenhwyfar · 03/07/2022 11:37

"Although confusingly the blazer is still good to wear"

I don't understand the 'still' because to me, blazers are just coming in now.
Fashion moves at different speeds in different places.
You say skinnies have been 'gone' for ten years, but I only started wearing them then. When they were first out they looked ridiculous to me and there was a bit of general belief that they were only for skinny legged people.

ReneBumsWombats · 03/07/2022 11:47

I fucking WISH skinnies had been gone for ten years!

I didn't say I agreed with his comment! It's just one of many corkers he (and his own father) used to come out with.

Corker eh! Just maybe left in the 19th century where they belong.

JiminyGlick · 03/07/2022 12:21

I still wear skinnies. Not skin-tight mind.

I am tall and slim but anything else looks awful on me.

BiFoldChampion · 03/07/2022 11:54

Corker eh! Just maybe left in the 19th century where they belong.

It was a common phrase when I was growing up too, the 70's was a tough time to be a girl/woman = lots of horrible comments about bums, weight, wearing glasses etc...

sunglassesonthetable · 03/07/2022 17:23

I was just watching the J Niemeier v H Watson match.Niemeier's mother who looks in her 50s ? looked amazing IMO. Loose Blue Linen type shirt, Perfect Jeans. I'll be going back on I player for a closer inspection.

I've just discovered Levi's Editor Jeans which I really like. Straight with a higher waist.Still also wearing skinny jeans. Need them for dog walking especially, because of the wet grass. I wear loads of cardigans myself.

In 900 plus comments on this thread I only saw 4 actual posters saying cardis are dated 😁And 2 of those were "waterfall" cardis ( practically a badge of honour to dislike on S&B) I only saw 2 posters saying denim jackets or leather jackets. I could be wrong.

But at least 2 more threads have been spawned on the S&B as a result of this one. Particularly annoyed about cardigans. Skinny Jeans are also very divisive.

Posters talk about "rules" or dictates but personally I think a trend is a very different thing. They ebb and flow and almost have a life of their own.

Floisme · 03/07/2022 17:50

I'm pleased this thread hasn't ended up a total binfire but I find it so frustrating that there are regular discussions on here about dressing for body shape, some of which get very dogmatic (no-one under 5'5 should wear wideleg trousers kind of thing). Yet I've never seen anyone get irate about it, and posters who aren't interested .... well I guess they just don't post.

Contrast what happens whenever anyone tries to start a thread about what's in or out of fashion: under siege from posters enraged about mumsnetters 'telling them what to wear' while at the same time yelling 'they don't care'.

The exception seems to be heels whose (in my view) temporary fall from favour is celebrated like it's the second Me Too.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/07/2022 18:06

@Floisme

and love this also

"when your clothes turn on you" .

Thank you that poster. My best take away from this thread.
