Meghan's coat-dress

I saw a clip of the royals arriving at St Pauls yesterday and really liked Meghans coat dress. I was curious about this type of garment though - would she be wearing a dress underneath or did the coat remain on and fully buttoned all day?

I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the coat!

I’m a similar build in that I don’t have much of a waist and a lot of things look really boxy on me, which is frustrating.

But I’m a sub-urban mum who has to make do with the high street and online shopping. I don’t understand why someone with MM’s resources (and sense of style- the actual items are always lovely!) doesn’t pick something that actually suits her shape?

LadyEloise1 · 04/06/2022 17:04

@thefirstfortyeight
Glad I'm not the only one. A colour combination I'll keep in mind as I have a bright pink dress ( wear to weddings ) which I normally accessorised with navy, which i now realise is dull. Smile

KittyMcKitty · 04/06/2022 17:10

I thought Meghans coat was lovely but it was a shame it didn’t fit properly - she has a short body, broadish shoulders and not a particularly defined waist (not a criticism) - had the coat been properly fitted it would have looked fab.

I thought Meghan’s outfit was gorgeous. I’ve seen both Carla Bruno & Brigitte Macron wear similar Dior coat dresses a few times. Sometimes they have the coat open and a plain dress in the same colour underneath so possibly that’s what Meghan had underneath too. Though I guess if you wear the coat closed you don’t really need the dress.
They are just so elegant and stylish with a simplicity is only possible with exquisite tailoring

She's got an amazing figure, she just doesn't make the best of it I thought she looked really tiny in jeans and a tee when she went to visit the Texas shooting victims memorial which I imagine is her true figure now, , but looked much fuller in the coat. The hat looked like it was borrowed from Joan Collins dynasty days.

fallfallfall · 04/06/2022 18:27

the outfit was seriously underwhelming no matter who made it or wore it. not to my liking at all. bland uninspiring simply nothing special.

SickAndTiredAgain · 04/06/2022 18:28

Were there any specific etiquette rules around gloves? I think she's the only person I saw wearing them at any point but it was so warm yesterday it surprised me that she would choose to. I think I saw Kate Middleton was carrying a pair - was there a point where etiquette said they had to be wearing them?

CiderJolly · 04/06/2022 18:36

She is gorgeous whatever she wears.

I thought it was a poor fit on her, especially the waist. Is she pregnant? She looked the other day as though she might have a bump.

I also wondered if she was pregnant

WarmBeerAndSandwiches · 04/06/2022 18:39

Meghan was clearly trying not to attract too much attention so, in that respect, the coat dress fulfilled the brief. It was a little ill-fitting but she still looked nice.

i thought the rest were a mixed bag, Kate, of course, was the best. Considering the money and help/advice they have access to they’re always a bit of a let-down in the style stakes.

mackthepony · 04/06/2022 18:39

She was fiddling with the collar loads. She looked uncomfortable.

Ohnonevermind · 04/06/2022 18:40

As others pointed out, the back flared out when it should have lain flat - as it was too tight. The sleeves looked a little tight too
and the sleeve length looked a little short as a result The belt didn’t look right on her, the position wasn’t as flattering as it could be

It’s couture, it should have fitted perfectly - that’s Dior’s fault not hers.

Agree.

Biggest example of this is Eugenie and Beatrice.

Especially Beatrice - that orange dress was stunning on her but will someone please give that woman a scoop neck for the love of Christ.

mackthepony · 04/06/2022 18:42

I honestly think Meg's dress-coat get up was intentionally ill fitting to draw attention away from her. She didn't look as stunning as she can do.

IrishMamaMia · 04/06/2022 18:50

Megan's outfit reminded me of royal style from the 80's but definitely fit the bill for what the occasion. Kate looked amazing, I think she is the only woman on earth who pulls off royal style so well. Eugenie and Beatrice had a nice balance of modern royal more normal style.

Perfectlystill · 04/06/2022 18:53

It was too small for her and made her look dumpy which I don't think she is.

NiqueNique · 04/06/2022 18:56

I think she very deliberately kept it classic and understated, as was quite right given the circumstances.

She’s always had fitting issues though, probably because so much of the time she’s been in the public eye over here she’s been pregnant and then getting back to her usual figure afterwards, and also not nearly as skinny as she used to be. She’s also often dressing in a way that I don’t think comes naturally to her so she may not have the natural instinct for what looks exactly right.

I very much doubt she’d intentionally choose to wear such ill-fitting clothes in order to not draw attention to herself. It’s much more likely that the outfit is on loan or that she didn’t want to have it altered for whatever reason.

meltypuff · 04/06/2022 18:58

Loved the outfit. Very elegant and hat was really nice. Didn't look ill fitting at all!

Ohnonevermind · 04/06/2022 18:58

@mackthepony

she looks good in casual clothes and can wear some stunning colours but her formal wear never fits well or suits her. Dresses
are often too tight at the shoulders and across the back , sometimes boned undergarment lines are visible etc

She is short waisted but insists on belts. She’d be far better ditching those.

she is lucky that so many colours look amazing on her, she has the money to get clothes tailored to her figure. She should do that. Unless they’re borrowed to be returned ?

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 04/06/2022 18:59

She only arrived in the U.K. very recently. Perhaps she didn’t have time to have it altered before the service? Or perhaps she hadn’t realised how cold it would be in the U.K. and ended up wearing something bulkier than originally intended underneath?

NiqueNique · 04/06/2022 19:00

Oh it was very definitely ill fitting. Anyone can see that, it’s glaringly obvious.

Doesn’t mean she still didn’t look great, she did. But she would have looked fantastic had it fitted her properly.

Not to me 🤷‍♀️

LilythePunk · 04/06/2022 19:03

I absolutely loved Zara’s outfit! She looked sensational. I also loved Eugenies dress. She often gets it wrong but looked great in it and I loved the colour. Didn’t like Beatrice’s dress. Too staid .
Meghans dress didn’t fit properly and didn’t flatter her figure. She often wears things too tight over the bust and is short waisted so belts don’t look good. The colour was putty but at least she chose something which didn’t make her stand out like a beacon as she did at the Commonwealth service two years ago. She has wider hips than she did and quite a broad back so she needs to dress differently I think.
LOVED Carries outfit too.

NiqueNique · 04/06/2022 19:04

Then perhaps you don’t understand how it was meant to sit?

Not being arsey at all, but really it was far too small. It would have sat quite differently had it been altered to fit her exactly right.
