If you could bring anything back in to fashion, what would it be?

I'd love it if headscarves came back, like the Queen wears. My late mum had beautiful ones. No bad hair days and so much more elegant than a hat

You?

Wide belts that go around your waist. I have two in my wardrobe waiting to make a reappearance.

Snorkellingaround · 19/05/2022 12:47

Trucker caps!

Thanks Kimiko I shall have a look! Cabbages and Roses and Laura Ashley might well have that sort of thing regularly, I never think of looking there. Never heard of Hemyca I will take a look.

The Laura Ashley coat is from the late 1980s and the Hemycka coat is at least 7 years old. The Wallis one is at least 15 years old. I've always had lots of coats so they don't get worn out.

I'm not interested in fashion. I have lots of shoes in ballet flat or the sort of low heeled pointy shoes Audrey Hepburn wore which are years old as well. I hate block heels and wedges and would never wear them no matter how fashionable they might be.

I like a certain look which is both dressed up and an element of dressing up. I don't care if it's fashionable or not.

There are certain things I hate e.g -trousers, jeans , puffa jackets and trainers for example. I don't own them. I don't notice if other people's jeans and puffa jackets are fashionable or not- for me they are just boring, ubiquitous clothes worn by almost everyone and doing nothing more than preserving modesty and keeping warm.

1950s petticoated skirts that flare out

What's stopping you wearing them? I do.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/05/2022 12:56

@Housewife2010 TK Maxx often have long cotton nightgowns!

lecreusetpeppermill · 19/05/2022 12:58

@KimikosNightmare I agree with you, what you say reminds me of myself, I have never understood why there are so many self imposed rules, even when I have fallen victim to them on occasion..

However I do have to say something in defence of the ubiquitous leggings/top/puffer situation, they have been invaluable to me (although I loathe jeans generally) when hiking and for outdoors stuff, living in nature, so to speak. I persisted in wafting around in my trailing wool coats, and still do, but there's something wonderfully practical about the right kit for the situation, and freeing, in a way.
But yes, it is odd to allow 'fashion' to dictate, when it ought to serve us instead.

Hats!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/05/2022 13:01

I second the skinny eyebrow one, my 90s brows would fit right in!

I agree that almost everything is in and it's down to the styling. One thing that you couldn't update with an outfit are nude court shoes(my personal pet peeve). They instantly put people in the 40+ age category.

I was also going to say bodycon dresses but if you put them with chunky heels or a platform boot they could look edgy. Hair would also have to be fashionable. No wavy blow dries!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/05/2022 13:02

And yy to hats, they really suit me because I've nice eyes (modest)

prettyteapotsplease · 19/05/2022 13:07

I would bring back the layered, multi-directional hairstyle which was very flattering for me and was actually something which my thick, wavy hair would do without too much of a struggle.

And simply making an effort when going out, rather than just wearing any old thing, not OTT, but not looking scruffy either.

I don't understand your post. I've got a couple of low heeled nude court shoes. They are elegant and I like them.

So far as wearing a body con dress, not my thing but chunky boots and platform soles are ugly. Platform soles were ugly in the 70s. I was a teenager then. I didn't wear them then and I wouldn't wear them now. With a dress, I'd wear a shoe that is elegant and pretty or possibly lace-up plimsolls. Re hair - I've got thick shoulder length hair with a bit of a wave too it. Sometimes I wear it down, sometimes up.

I loved the indie look of the mid 2000s popularised by Alexa Chung, lily allen etc

Those were my prime clubbing years. Banquet by block party takes me straight back there!

Are they the white pin tucked Victorian style?

FunnyTalks · 19/05/2022 14:04

An adolescence where an occasional smudge of mascara & or eyeliner sufficed and nobody gave a shit if your legs were pale? I get so sad seeing my local secondary school girls walk to school with fake tans and "done" hair and faces.

Knowing my 12 year old son is probably able to roll out of bed an hour later each morning to attend the same school.

Boot cut jeans

And that boho chic style circa 2005

And those long maxi skirts which were like tiered

PradaOnaBudget · 19/05/2022 14:50

for those wishing for bootcut jeans, they really are everywhere this year. Look! :-)

Flares are most definitely back in, i bloody love flares, have always worn them, and am chuffed to bits that I can now get them easily from pretty much anywhere, and in various shades of denim, cord etc.
I have 2 DDs in their 20s and most of the styles mentioned on here are being worn by them and their friends. I think fashion has never been as fluid/interchangeable, it's pretty much anything goes right now, and I love it. My girls and their friends love a day going round the charity shops to find their next fave outfits.

Bootcut jeans look daft if you're not wearing them with a heeled boot or shoe.

I’ve never ordered from here, so I don’t know what the service/quality is like, but I often find myself on this site looking longingly at all the lovely coats and cloaks.

Love my eBay Levi’s 927s, only jeans I’ve ever been complemented on. Good with trainers. Just wish I could find a pair of the cord ones I had in the ‘90s. Wore them until tjey literally fell to pieces.

Me too. I'm a bit nervous as they are very reticent about who they are and where they are based.

If anyone has bought from them can you comment?

Ooo a gypsy skirt and vest ! Loved that look used to feel really pretty and it made me look so slim !!!

I wear the big wrap head bands with a knot the middle, I always feel a bit regal 😂 and I don’t have to worry about greasy grey roots!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/05/2022 21:00

@KimikosNightmare what's there to not understand? Confused I was saying everything is in fashion, bar nude court shoes. I would not bring them back. My personal taste. I'm 20 years younger than you so I can how our taste would differ.
