I'd love it if headscarves came back, like the Queen wears. My late mum had beautiful ones. No bad hair days and so much more elegant than a hat

You?

@DSGR, those are everywhere now. The youngsters only wear bootcut, wide legs or flares. I was in Zara in London yesterday and it's all they had in every possible colour

1950s dresses. They are so pretty! I know you can buy and wear them now, I have one. It's beautiful. But I feel very overdressed in it. It's a dress I wear for fancy occasions. (Not often!) I would love for it to be casual, everyday wear 😆

About 90% of my (large number of) dresses are 1950s style. I wear them as everyday dresses.

I think I must own quite a few of the items mentioned here, including a Scottish Widows-style cloak (admittedly not an item I wear for everyday purposes). I think dressing up is for feeling happy and enjoying yourself, and in my case that means dealing with the ‘feedback’ on my style 😁. I love it when I meet a fellow traveller!

More well cut tailored clothing and jackets that do up from the breast line rather than half way down the waist. Terrible idea if you have big boobs!

Exactly what I was going to say, hate jackets with a single button at about belly button height.

I don't have a cloak but I have a floor length, black velvet, double- breasted coat, fitted to the waist and then flaring out with massive skirts.

I also have a floor length, navy cotton drill coat which has more than a touch of a Jane Austen pelisse coat about it. I wore the Jane Austen coat today.

I've also got a couple of very full skirted, long black wool Victorian riding coat style coats. I don't care if any of them are in fashion- they are all beautiful.

Hats ought to make a comeback. And general "smartness" and looking like you've made an effort. Like when you see pictures from, say, the 40s / 50s / 60s and the men would be in suits and ties and the women in dresses and smart coats and everyone would be in hats. I think I was born in the wrong era Grin

Maxi Dresses/Skirts/Coats. I so wanted a heavy wool Double Breasted Maxi Coat in 69/70 but went to live abroad in a hot climate. They were no longer in fashion when I came back. Luckily Maxi dresses and skirts were still in fashion. Still have some up in the loft ( for some reason they have shrunk!!!!)

minipie · 19/05/2022 00:16

@KimikosNightmare where are your coats from please, they sound wonderful!

Yes to 1950s dresses or even 1890s. Any era where dresses were fitted with a waist, as opposed to today’s floral pregnancy smock efforts.

Platform boots. I owned some in the late 90s and they were super comfy and made me taller/longer legged, no other shoe since has done that.

The no make up look of the early 90s. Just to counteract the current trend for overdone laminated contoured highlighted bronzed faces (not to mention the fillers).

Antarcticant · 19/05/2022 00:20

Medieval dress for men.

Low rise trousers. The sort with a two inch zip.

Oh yes.

I am a short waisted, short arse.

'High rise' anything, or anything tucked in, makes me look like a soft boiled in a novelty Easter egg cup. Give me a low rise any day.

brokengoalposts · 19/05/2022 01:00

I've been wearing bootcut jeans, flares and wide leg trousers for a few months now, I've had so many compliments and my 16yo says I'm well in, lol

Carlycat · 19/05/2022 01:08

Split knee flares ( preferably in two different colours ) with chunky platforms

orangeisthenewpuce · 18/05/2022 19:16

Can't remember what year it was but we were all wearing smock tops and jeans. It was so easy.

Love this.

VanillaImpulse · 19/05/2022 01:19

Ugg boots -
Miss the days of going out with my feet as comfortable as if I was wearing slippers

dollymuchymuchness · 19/05/2022 01:23

Platform shoes and flares.

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 19/05/2022 02:02

Ok, I'm genuinely puzzled by this thread. Have you women been hiding under a rock? A list of clothing items currently very on trend below for you!

Platform shoes ☑️
Chunky platform heeled boots ☑️
Boot cut / flared / wide leg jeans ☑️
Low rise jeans and boots ☑️
Mini skirts ☑️
More tailored (but not too tailored) blazers back the hugely oversized ones we've seen in the previous seasons

Also hugely on trend at the moment:

  • Quilted jackets & bags - like patchwork / vintage / homemade looking
  • Crochet anything!
  • Clogs
  • Retro 70's / vintage print
  • Bold colour blocking
  • cut out details
  • sequins and sparkles (up and coming trend)

meowzeer · 19/05/2022 02:18

@MintyGreenDream where have you been hiding? Leopard print is in and has been again for a while

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 19/05/2022 02:18

Forgot to include ballet flats as well ☑️

DuesToTheDirt · 19/05/2022 02:33

Dressing up for a night out. I enjoy dressing more smartly to go out in the evening, but when you get there and everyone else is in fleeces, football shirts, joggers etc including the rest of my family it feels a bit weird.

Perms

Onthedunes · 19/05/2022 02:47

I really don't think there is anything that can't be worn now, the younger generation seem so keen on different era's, the eighties for example.

I love the diversity, and I must admit I love seeing the young and old being expressive with their outfits.

Myself I'm having a bit of Biba, hobo look at the moment and I love the flared line.

I agree with the headscarf, more of a driving in an aston martin with sunglasses and scarf tied under chin look, rather than a Hilda Ogden look 😂

TurkishBath · 19/05/2022 03:44

I think there’s a market for cloaks. It might prevent people from wearing DryRobes as coats.

During COVID, I mentioned to my DH that I was a bit worried about the DC’s headteacher as was stressed and really didn’t look herself.

He texted me one day at pick up and said “I think you are right about the head, she is outside wearing a massive cloak.” It was a DryRobe 😂 Still concerning though as she was usually so elegant.

AnotherCF · 19/05/2022 03:53
