Is the colour of this dress tacky?

I can't decide if it's heartily for summer or tacky as it's too bright?!

Thoughts please!!!

@Iamthewombat

Loads of posters REALLY don’t want you to buy the dress. Which means that you definitely should.
I’m not sure how that works?

“Is this dress nice?”
“Not really”
“Perfect, I’m buying it.”

?

Iamthewombat · 13/04/2022 08:30

I was thinking more along the lines of this sort of thing:

‘It looks like something my mum would have got from Freemans in a pack of 2, 20p per week’

‘It’s tacky. Clingy, and showing lots of flesh”

‘Looks very cheap’

‘Looks like something I bought from the market in 1989’

‘A tube of garish synthetic fabric’

‘Looks like something from Primark’

‘Cheap and Timmy Mallett-ish’

‘Very Matalan cheap looking’

This frock has really brought out the disapproval, hasn’t it? Much more so than, say, a synthetic floral puff sleeved midi dress costing £79 that could reasonably be subject to the same criticisms.

However when it’s the latter type of dress posters tend to be more polite and say things like, “you can do better” or “how about X?” rather than the cheap/tacky/oh no dear, don’t wear a clingy dress! comments this one has attracted.

I’m really interested in why. I can guess.

Iamthewombat · 13/04/2022 08:33

Noooo! The flouncy floral sack dresses need to stay around for us shortie porkers!

Here’s refreshing honesty.

KatherineJaneway · 13/04/2022 08:35

Colour is nice but too bright for me to wear. You'd have to be a bit like like Julia Roberts to pull that dress off

Milomonster · 13/04/2022 09:17

Depends on who is wearing it. Could look striking or totally shit.

HailAdrian · 13/04/2022 09:20

It's great but I love pink.

UpendedPineapple · 13/04/2022 09:21

@josil

I changed my mind and as per some suggestions I'll buy and try it on - if I hate it I'll send it back.

I think I might be able to pull it off Grin, maybe! (It'll look awful now I bet lol)

Good! I love it and if you're tall and slender it'll look amazing
Catshaveiteasy · 13/04/2022 09:25

Reminds me of an all in one (boiler suit type thing) I had in the 80s, which was that colour and I blxxxdy loved at the time. Probably looked awful as most 80s fashion did.....

I do like the colour but even the model doesn't look good in that dress. Something well styled in an interesting fabric might work.

BTW is pink really back? After all that grey, tan and black....

Fridafever · 13/04/2022 09:27

I have to admit I had a real “oh god no” reaction to it but 100% only because it would look shit on me! I love the colour definitely!

Fridafever · 13/04/2022 09:30

I’m really interested in why. I can guess.

Oooh what an arch clever point!

Zazdar · 13/04/2022 09:33

heavy nasty- feeling fabric and shows acres of bra strap and VPL.

There’s not much you can do about the fabric, but the last two are really easy to solve.

valerianaofficiana · 13/04/2022 09:35

@imthewombat, now-now, don't be mean 😭

pictish · 13/04/2022 09:36

wombat ehhh ok. I’m slim and fit and can wear a variety of dresses well enough. I’m not jealous if that’s what you’re angling at. Or competing. My opinion is based solely on the dress. In fact if I was competing I’d prefer OP to wear this dress as I will be wearing a better one.
It’s a boring pink dress that you might find in the summer section at Matalan. She asked, I replied.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/04/2022 09:46

I don't like flouncy florals either.

However, that doesn't mean that this dress isn't a dead ringer for Freeman's catalogue beachwear (at a vastly inflated price).

Doesn't matter one jot to me whether the OP buys it or not. And if she looks better in it than the model, good for her. And if she doesn't but feels good in it, great. What I think of the dress doesn't change - because that's what I gave - my opinion of the dress.

I'm sure that there are better quality dopamine dresses available for the price if it's the colour that is the appeal, though.

housemaus · 13/04/2022 09:54

I think it's lovely, I'd get it if you're quite long OP! I am not long and I would look ridiculous so please wear it for those of us who can't :)

Legslegs · 13/04/2022 10:17

There is a photo at bottom of the link posted by a customer. She looks lovely.

toomanytwinkies · 13/04/2022 10:33

BTW is pink really back? After all that grey, tan and black....

I hope so, so fed up of all the beige… pink is back, as is acid lime green, bright royal blue and lilac. Although no colour creates as much derision in here than the dreaded lilac. whispers - I quite like all the purple tones

Also, the ‘menopause pink’ is really offensive and also doesn’t make any sense.

dudsville · 13/04/2022 10:35

How can a colour be tacky? Either it suits you or it doesn't, but colours themselves can't be tacky??? I like COS clothing, but I think you can get an equally well made version of this dress at a much lower price.

Anoisagusaris · 13/04/2022 10:47

I think it’s horrible, and not saying that because I’m jealous. I just think that there are far nicer dresses that the OP could pull off with her height and size.

GalactatingGoddess · 13/04/2022 11:24

The dress would be lovely if the person could pull it off. Id suit that shade but deffo not that style 😂

toomanytwinkies · 13/04/2022 11:40

How can a colour be tacky?

It can’t. People are weird and just projecting their personal dislike of a colour.

Gingerwarthog · 13/04/2022 11:45
@GrapesThatThrive yes I will! The cos models often are strange I think - not what most average people look like so it's hard to imagine yourself in their clothes for sure but when I go in their store everything is such amazing quality so I'll put my trust in them and hope it's nice !
It's a great dress - well cut and in a good on trend colour.
What's not to like?
So much better than the ones I see in shops all the time at the moment that look like something for a milkmaid circa 1842.

feraldiggy · 13/04/2022 11:51

Would be nice with a linen shirt thrown over.

Neonskytonight · 13/04/2022 11:57

I was in Cos yesterday. There were 2 or 3 dresses in this colour including a floaty big one. They remind me of the m&s dress from a few years ago.

RuthW · 13/04/2022 12:13

Colour isn't tacky but style is. Sorry.
