Why do they make white pants?

BiscuitLover3678 · 11/04/2022 18:56

Am I the only one who hates white pants? They show up everything and I never like to wear them just in case. Yet so many packs of pants will have at least one white pair.

Does anyone actually like them?

I was a teenager before I realised pants came in colours other than white. Hated wearing white pants then, dealing with periods and the inevitable stains that provoked much disapproval from my mum, and still dont like white pants! I have a couple of pairs but that is it.

Titterofwit · 11/04/2022 19:00

I know several people (relatives -I dont go around asking acquaintances their pant choices :) ) who will only wear white pants. One its an allergy to dyes and another is a need for pure cotton with nothing added (no allergy though) .
I would guess that it is cheaper per pant to make white only rather than add dyes and patterns.

Hobbittingaroundtown · 11/04/2022 19:02

Isn’t it for wearing under light coloured things where eg black might show through?

PlinkPlankPlunk · 11/04/2022 19:04

White pants still show under white clothes - you need a nude shade to be invisible

WombatChocolate · 11/04/2022 19:04

I also wonder why.
Apart from very small children who seem to wear white pants and vests, which adults really find them suitable?

Black or dark colours for me.

And I don’t like ones which are coloured on outside but white inside…what’s the point of that?

I have a couple of pairs of flesh coloured pants for the odd outfit that might need them, but rarely worn.

And I never buy a multi pack that has any white ones in it.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/04/2022 19:06

I like white pants because white looks nice on my skin tone and looks fresh and clean.
Obviously I wear other colours too.

moonbedazzled · 11/04/2022 19:12

I wear mainly nude colours but I like white and black as well. I don't like anything patterned.

MumstedInadequate · 11/04/2022 19:13

Apparently I read on MN a good colour for caucasians to wear under pale clothes is bright red.

Just thought I'd add that to the debate

angrygoat2 · 11/04/2022 19:17

So they can go in the hottest wash with all your other whites - more hygienic as it kills more bacteria than a cold or medium wash. At least that was the conventional wisdom when I was growing up!

MarshaBradyo · 11/04/2022 19:17

I usually buy white

angrygoat2 · 11/04/2022 19:19

Sorry also just realised you weren't actually asking why! But yeah, that's what I was always told is the reason rather than it being an aesthetic choice. Think what pp said about cotton and dye is also true

It really isn't. It's a MN Emperor's new clothes thing, it looks ridiculous Grin
RidingMyBike · 11/04/2022 19:21

Isn't it because they used to be done on a hot wash as it was more hygienic?! My Mum and Gran only ever had white underwear and black was viewed as rather risqué! Confused.

I now mostly wear black!

BowerOfBramble · 11/04/2022 19:25

can they really go in your hottest wash when they have elastic (one hopes)?

I was wondering the same thing the other day OP. I've spent 20 years menstruating at least 1 day out of 4 and white pants just seem utterly idiotic for women. I have 2 pairs that came in multipacks, they're very clean because they're never worn.

brokengoalposts · 11/04/2022 19:26

What's wrong with white pants? I just going the next pair on the pile in. Unless they're definitely going to show, then I'll go for the next pair down, lol

BiscuitLover3678 · 11/04/2022 19:26

I didn’t realise that about cotton and the dyes.

They have really obvious stains. Sorry it’s so gross I know! Have to hide them in the washing basket. Other colours show up less.

I like white when I've got a tan, makes me feel a bit 1950's pin up. Although I look absolutely nothing like one Grin

EssexLioness · 11/04/2022 19:29

I agree. I stick with black underwear mostly, never buy black

Popopopo · 11/04/2022 19:29

I hate them probably more than I should. I usually end up buying plain black just to avoid the white pair, they either never get washed and fester at the bottom of the laundry basket until I give up and stick them in with my predominantly dark clothes so they go that horrible grey colour.

User280905 · 11/04/2022 19:31

I like the look of white underwear. And they never show through jeans, which is what I wear pretty much every day

EssexLioness · 11/04/2022 19:33
  • should say I never wear white!

Tbf black knickers can be problematic

‘Show up everything’? Are you wearing transparent clothes. I wear white pants and they don’t shop up under any of my clothes.
