Gutted by new haircut

Got my haircut 2 days ago and just feeling awful. I thought it was the shock of the change, but I think I knew really that it was a bad cut. Today my friend confirmed that it really is bad.

I think it is an inverted bob style. I don't blame the stylist for the style itself, as each thing is technically within what was discussed - although it really doesn't suit me. BUT the execution is (in my opinion) pretty shoddy and I am just so sad.

For example, I wanted it below the chin, but because he cut it almost at the nape from the back, the whole length is very short and only 1 inch sections at the front are below the chin. And these 2 pieces are noticeably longer than the rest of the hair, they look like they should be trimmed off. The back and sides are bulky, and don't lay nicely. At the back especially, there seems to be a second layer underneath messily poking out.

When I pin back the 2 long front sections, the 2 halves are different lengths. I assumed I parted it wrongly, but even when doing a ridiculously deep side part the length discrepancy remains.

I cannot lose any more length, the style itself is very unflattering, and I am petrified of getting it rectified and making it shorter. I can just about pull it into a one inch ponytail, sort of.

Any advice of how to move forward? Have some occasions coming up and feeling so sad. Thanks

I had a hair disaster a couple of years ago when I decided to cut my own hair during lockdown. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking. It was very long and just a bit damaged. Honestly if I’d just taken a few inches off it would have been fine but I attempted a bob 😂🤢

I had to tie it back until the salons opened. Luckily a very good hairdresser made it look nice, and then I only hated it because it was quite short. If I’d had less done to it since then, by now it would be long again.

So I’d second the advice being given here: get a good hairdresser to fix it. But then really leave it alone until it’s at a length you’re happy with. The thing is with shorter hair is that the style matters more. A way around this is to had some loose curls and style it so it’s a bit ‘messy’. It will be fine.
Mine ended up being cut to the nape of my neck which was waaayy shorter than I wanted, just to correct the style, which was good. But honestly I just decided to enjoy it being short because, after all, I will never have it that way again.

Crap cut but BEAUTIFUL hair

Jesus Christ. I am so very sorry OP, but that is incredibly poor. That is very very bad. Poor you. It's badly cut, not straight. Please complain.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 11/05/2022 15:03

I am glad that (with a few exceptions) the thread doesn’t contain the tropes of
’it’s only hair’
’it will grow’, and
’no one will notice / is interested in your appearance’

Hair is one of the few things about yourself you see every day and which can really make every day a ‘bad hair day’.

The few occasions I’ve had a really bad haircut , somewhat perversely I’ve always felt a bit better when friends have looked a bit shocked at its badness and commiserated and giggled with me at its general crapness

You have described my haircut. Although seeing your picture I can tell you mine is worse. I had it in December. I still have to scrape it into a one inch bun thing. It’s so awful. I’ve not worn it down since I went to the hairdresser in Dec. No exaggeration. And I had long hair. Wanted a few cm off. She cut chunks. All uneven. Up into the nape. I watched silently and upset. Then smiled and said thank you. Paid and gave her a tip.
Yours is not as bad as mine but I understand how you feel.

We (and I include myself here) need to stop doing this.

No other service would get away with this shoddy work! Apart from the fact they’ll keep doing the same god awful thing to every other poor bugger who has the misfortune of getting lumped with the shit hairdresser as either they’re blissfully unaware they can’t cut hair, we shouldn’t be accepting this poor quality service. Imagine you took your car to a car wash and it came out with a mirror and bumper dangling off and we just smiled and paid a tip! Hair is so personal, to let a stranger cut it is so trusting, it makes me angry there are crap hairdressers out there getting tips for ruining peoples hair!

Yay - great update

Thanks for the update. I'm so pleased you found a stylist to even it up. Looks lovely! 😊
