Gutted by new haircut

Got my haircut 2 days ago and just feeling awful. I thought it was the shock of the change, but I think I knew really that it was a bad cut. Today my friend confirmed that it really is bad.

I think it is an inverted bob style. I don't blame the stylist for the style itself, as each thing is technically within what was discussed - although it really doesn't suit me. BUT the execution is (in my opinion) pretty shoddy and I am just so sad.

For example, I wanted it below the chin, but because he cut it almost at the nape from the back, the whole length is very short and only 1 inch sections at the front are below the chin. And these 2 pieces are noticeably longer than the rest of the hair, they look like they should be trimmed off. The back and sides are bulky, and don't lay nicely. At the back especially, there seems to be a second layer underneath messily poking out.

When I pin back the 2 long front sections, the 2 halves are different lengths. I assumed I parted it wrongly, but even when doing a ridiculously deep side part the length discrepancy remains.

I cannot lose any more length, the style itself is very unflattering, and I am petrified of getting it rectified and making it shorter. I can just about pull it into a one inch ponytail, sort of.

Any advice of how to move forward? Have some occasions coming up and feeling so sad. Thanks

You have such beautiful hair.

But it looks as if a child helpfully did the cut for you with the kitchen scissors. I cannot believe a professional would be that clumsy.

I would just chop those long bits off myself, rather than trust them to not fuck it up further. And play with products until it grows out. But also complain! Go and get your money back. No-one should charge for that cut.

Loginmystery · 07/04/2022 02:05

You have described my haircut. Although seeing your picture I can tell you mine is worse. I had it in December. I still have to scrape it into a one inch bun thing. It’s so awful. I’ve not worn it down since I went to the hairdresser in Dec. No exaggeration. And I had long hair. Wanted a few cm off. She cut chunks. All uneven. Up into the nape. I watched silently and upset. Then smiled and said thank you. Paid and gave her a tip.
Yours is not as bad as mine but I understand how you feel.

DramaAlpaca · 07/04/2022 02:12

Oh no, poor you! That's a terrible cut. It should be easy enough to tidy up though. In the meantime, do as suggested above and scrunch it up a bit.

CockSpadget · 07/04/2022 02:17

Yep, they defo cocked up with the cut. Go to another salon and the will even it up for you, it won't need a lot taking off to make it right. I would get a little more off those 2 long front strands though to make them look less out of place.

oakleaffy · 07/04/2022 02:21

@JillPole123

Thanks all - will speak to someone else then and see what they think. Can't get worse Grin... And thanks for the styling tips, I feel a bit better just discussing it after a strained 2 days
I had an absolute disaster of a haircut.....as an unassertive 16 yr old. I had waist length blonde hair that I wanted making into pre-Raphaelite ripples.

Parent's friend's daughter said she could ''Perm it''

I went to her rental in Hampstead, and she said it needed a ''Trim'' first.
She cut off about 40cms of hair...
I was too timid to say anything...and her flatmates were going 'Should that be happening''?

The 'Perm' was hideous.

Stepmum didn't even recognise me at the door.

She said ''That's not what you wanted..Is it?...

It took years to grow back.
About as short as yours BEFORE she permed it.

It was a complete devastation compared to yours.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 07/04/2022 02:35

Butchered almost.
On the plus side, you have lovely hair, so silky and beautiful colour....and it will grow.
I would, and I have, gone to a better place and get a bad cut fixed.

KosherDill · 07/04/2022 02:35

@Vanillalatteplease

Whilst you're waiting for it to grow in a little I would use a little wax or putty to 'rough' it up a little. It's more noticeable when you are wearing it so straight.

This. Don't take more off. Use a tousled look to get through the growing phase.

For what it's worth your hair is gorgeous. I'd rather have it with a botched cut than my own!!

SarahBellam · 07/04/2022 02:58

The cut is poor but you have beautiful glossy hair. Don’t get it cut for a month and in the meantime can you curl or wave it?

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 07/04/2022 03:18

If it's any comfort, hair is supposed to grow quickest in the spring.

Floydthebarber · 07/04/2022 03:18

I would ask for it to be evened out, I don't think you will have to go too much shorter to get it looking decent. As PPs have said, your hair is a lovely colour and condition.

I had an awful haircut nearly 20 years ago. I still remember how upset I was. I didn't do anything about it, certainly not go back and ask for it to be sorted. It might be worth forking out for another cut somewhere else.

Yes to an undercut for an inverted bob. When I had them my hair dresser always used clippers on the nape of my neck.

Floydthebarber · 07/04/2022 03:29

Looking through the photos again, I think the length suits you - even with the orange squiggle face! If the back isn't very graduated then losing a teensy bit more on the length to have a blunt bob might be a good cut for you.

liliainterfrutices · 07/04/2022 03:42

You have gorgeous hair - that’s what I noticethe most.

k1233 · 07/04/2022 03:46

I'd get it evened up and the front bits in proportion. At present it looks like he was cutting a bob then thought "shit, she wanted an inverted bob - I'll just leave the front bits longer"

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 03:50

@SarahBellam

This is a good idea like other pps have said. If it’s wavy and you pin/tie some parts then it won’t be as noticeable that it’s wonky.

A bad haircut really does make you feel rubbish but it is temporary! And it shouldn’t be too long until it’s grown out and you can get it cut straight.

Namaste6 · 07/04/2022 04:02

Your hair is really really lovely. The colour and gloss is what I noticed first. Seriously, this is not a big deal. Go to another hairdresser and get them to even it up. Did you ask for a blunt cut? That's what you've been given, albeit a tad uneven at the back. You could ask another hairdresser to invert it slightly, although that would mean that it may have to go slightly shorter still at the back to achieve that cut. Personally, I would stick with the blunt cut - even the base line up. A blunt cut, chin length bob is one of the loveliest and elegant cuts you can get. You could also give it a slight kink with straighteners or a curling rod. I would reduce the length of the front sections to bring it in line, but I think this may bother you?

In short, I would -

  • visit another hairdresser - always better in the long run
  • ask for an even blunt cut edge with 'slightly' texturised ends on the uppermost layer
  • ask the stylist to help you style and finish it
Derelicthome · 07/04/2022 04:21

Your hair looks so soft and healthy.

Can I ask what shampoo and conditioner you use?

cookiemonster2468 · 07/04/2022 04:34

It's not a great cut, but as PP said you still have nice hair. I don't think it's the end of the world, it's just a bit uneven.

Considering the circumstances you mentioned with the hairdresser, I would just chalk it up to experience, go to another salon and pay to have it straightened up, then let it go out.

Goes without saying, I then wouldn't let the hairdresser that did the original cut do my hair again!

cookiemonster2468 · 07/04/2022 04:35

*let it GROW out (typo)

boronia · 07/04/2022 04:43

Your hair is lovely.
That cut is not .
For reference - I have a really similar bob and my hairdresser is mathematical in her precision and takes time on it which is what you need for that sort of cut.
A good hairdresser will fix the uneven bits for you but never go back to that place again!

TwoShades1 · 07/04/2022 05:15

Your original description on the op made it sound like an asymmetric inverted bob which is a perfectly legitimate haircut (though obviously depends if that’s the cut you asked for!). Having seen the pictures it is cut quite badly. But looks like it can easily be fixed into a better finished inverted bob, an all over short bob or any other shorter style. If you can’t face getting it fixed, then styling is wavy/curly will help disguise the unevenness of the cut.

ittakes2 · 07/04/2022 05:36

You can explain to the hairdresser you go see that you don't want it too short even if its means some of it stays a bit uneven. Better to go slowly - you can always after they finish ask them to cut a little more if you feel its still too uneven but if you have a big chop can't go back.

YukoandHiro · 07/04/2022 05:38

It's awful. Really poor work. Go to a different hairdresser to get it fixed

Pawtriarchal · 07/04/2022 05:48

I think it will actually feel (conversely!) longer when you have it cut correctly. A good hairdresser will know what to do immediately and it will make the world of difference. With your lovely shiny hair you could have it cut into a blunt jawline bob, or keep it a little asymmetrical by taking the back up a tiny bit and shortening the longer front a little. I wouldn’t wait for it grow out, I’d get it sorted now and you’ll feel a million times better (and vindicated!). It will still have a chance to grow that little bit extra but I don’t think you’ll need that. Some ideas attached.

Can I add, lovely colour

ExplodingElephants · 07/04/2022 06:33

Forget the fact that the stylist who did it has got personal issues, that’s not your problem. If she’s not feeling up to cutting hair then she shouldn’t be doing it and giving crap haircuts. You can go in and be very firm and polite, take a friend/partner for support if needed. You can use the money to (hopefully) get it rectified.
