Got my haircut 2 days ago and just feeling awful. I thought it was the shock of the change, but I think I knew really that it was a bad cut. Today my friend confirmed that it really is bad.

I think it is an inverted bob style. I don't blame the stylist for the style itself, as each thing is technically within what was discussed - although it really doesn't suit me. BUT the execution is (in my opinion) pretty shoddy and I am just so sad.

For example, I wanted it below the chin, but because he cut it almost at the nape from the back, the whole length is very short and only 1 inch sections at the front are below the chin. And these 2 pieces are noticeably longer than the rest of the hair, they look like they should be trimmed off. The back and sides are bulky, and don't lay nicely. At the back especially, there seems to be a second layer underneath messily poking out.

When I pin back the 2 long front sections, the 2 halves are different lengths. I assumed I parted it wrongly, but even when doing a ridiculously deep side part the length discrepancy remains.

I cannot lose any more length, the style itself is very unflattering, and I am petrified of getting it rectified and making it shorter. I can just about pull it into a one inch ponytail, sort of.

Any advice of how to move forward? Have some occasions coming up and feeling so sad. Thanks

It’s not a good cut but having had a bob for many years, I’d really recommend getting a Babyliss Big Hair and using it on your DRY hair. It’ll really help turn it under at the back so that that strange wedge doesn’t look as bad?!

Indicatrice · 07/04/2022 06:53

The hairdresser’s personal issues are not your problem.

Get a refund!

Rememberitwell · 07/04/2022 06:54

It’s not even but the overall effect is fine as you have such lovely hair - condition and colour.

OutingHobby · 07/04/2022 07:01

Your hair is so shiny!

I would wait a few weeks if you can so there's still a week before your event and then go to another hairdresser. I think if they trimmed those flappy bits at the front to the same length as the rest of the bob it would look nice and of course even it up as best they can.

NETSRIK · 07/04/2022 07:04

It isn't level at the back which is plain to see. You do need to get this sorted. Show that photo to any hairdresser and they would immediately see the issue and immediately know how to fix it. Your hair is such a beautiful colour by the way.

FabFitFifties · 07/04/2022 07:06

How did it look when he dried it? If it looked a lot better, you could address your drying method. Another hairdresser could help you with that. I have a bob, and how I dry it makes a huge difference. I use a hot air styling brush.

Benjispruce4 · 07/04/2022 07:08

I love an inverted Bob and your hair is lovely and thick and glossy. Perfect for that style. I think it’s been badly done at the back. If you get it properly sharpened up and just go with it until it grows out a bit- won’t be long.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/04/2022 07:13

If you don’t want an inverted bob now, I’d get it cut into a better bob. Don’t wait. Your hair doesn’t look good.

I think I’d go to a really experienced hairdresser and get their advice. Im not a hairdresser but I can see you’ve got a lot of hair. I do too and cutting it all one length (even when it is well executed) makes mine look dull and lifeless and reminds me of a cut I had when I was about 10. So I would want to add some texture and make it more choppy.

Something like the attached photo is probably achievable. I’ve chosen this as the model also has thick hair. It may be slightly shorter. But within a month should have grown to this.

You could also get the back graduated at the back and make it into a true inverted Bob but again imo it would look better choppy.

Not sure if the pic will load as it’s a screenshot. This is the web page. www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/1477812366269706/

Thatsplentyjack · 07/04/2022 07:15

I would go get the 2 longer bits at the front chopped off. Think that will look much better. That's not an inverted Bob, that's a Bob with 2 straggley bits at the front.

LondonQueen · 07/04/2022 07:21

Gosh that's awful, did she go at it with a hacksaw? I wouldn't be going back!

Netty909 · 07/04/2022 07:24

I had a similar thing happen to me. I wouldn't cut anything off by your face but possibly get it tidied up at the back. I found this video helped, I don't sleep in it just leave it in for 1/2 hour when hair is nearly dry.

Cripes absolutely go back and ask them to rectify it. The shape you've gone for looks like it would suit you, but the cut is all over the shop. If they have personal issues that make you feel you can't complain, they shouldn't be cutting hair right now.

Walkingalot · 07/04/2022 07:27

I had an inverted asymmetrical bob cut just before first lockdown. Oh boy was it bad! It looked like 2 haircuts as one side was just under my ear and the other way past my chin. The pic I took in was nothing like what he did, not as drastic. Thankfully I had the rest of lockdown to hide.

Defo get it evened up now. No point waiting a month for it to grow and then getting the new growth cut off.

Pinzotti · 07/04/2022 07:29

Oh bless ya, it's not a great 'do' but the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is 2 weeks, so you have time before your event.
It's horrible to have to phone up and complain, bit if you ring up and say you can't do anything with it, it defers the blame some what, them you can go in and see someone else. I had a god awful do last year, it was frizzy and I'm still having to deal with it Angry but I saw the Same person and they were not annoyed that I had come back.
Good luck and let us know

Bluebluemoon · 07/04/2022 07:30

I wouldn't go back to the same salon - do you have a Toni and guy or somewhere you could go where you know they have properly trained stylists?

I feel your pain Op - the same happened to me - that was a Bob as well. I think they are very tricky to get right and need a really good stylist. I was pregnant at the time and she absolutely butchered my hair. I still remember my colleagues look of horror when I went in to work the next day and me busting into tears! It quickly grew out though.

I think the back just needs evening out a bit - the side and front views don't look bad at all and you do have lovely hair. I agree with wearing it in a messy style until it's grown out a bit.

I really feel for you though - it's a horrible feeling when a haircut goes wrong - your way your hair looks is so tied up in your emotions. It's honestly not that bad though.

Could have been worse.

I took my 8 year old DD to a new salon that had opened, usually she just had her long hair trimmed where I went. They straightened her hair then cut it. Next day there were bits hanging down and it looked awful, had to go back to the usual place to get it sorted out.
So from my POV expensive doesn’t always mean good.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 07/04/2022 07:35

I’d be furious and upset.
If the hairdresser’s personal issues are causing such abysmal results on her clients then she won’t have a business before long.
Go to another hairdresser, get it evened up, you have enviably beautiful hair and it will make you feel much better.
And don’t go back to the original place.

Kuachui · 07/04/2022 07:36

oh dear lord that is very very unstraight isnt it

I get that you are not happy with the cut but it is hair and hair grows back.

It's not that bad, to me, most people are not that interested in how you look.

I would go to a few other salons, say you are not happy and ask what they advise. Then make a decision safe in the knowledge this is only a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

Try to keep it in perspective. I had my hair massacred once, it is now just a funny story.

It's a haircut! Let it fucking grow a few weeks and get it cut somewhere else.
PriestessofPing · 07/04/2022 07:49

Aww. Well the good news is your hair is gorgeous in colour and texture. I think getting it cut with some more layers and not such a harsh bob that needs ultra precision in the cut to look even (and a lot of maintenance when washing and styling afterwards) would really help.

ronjobbins · 07/04/2022 07:57

@Kanaloa

That’s true, it is lovely! A gorgeous colour and looks shiny and thick. No matter how good a cut my hair is fried from bleaching and really wispy! So maybe take some comfort in the fact that you only need to wait for it to grow out then you’ll have beautiful hair again.

But if your hair is wrong everything is wrong…. That’s why they’re called “bad hair days”. Sorry I can’t send you my stylist OP because he’s meticulous. I’ve scoured around for a new salon recently but If you look at a lot of their social media you will see some are really only churning out the same looks with the emphasis on colour not cut. You want a salon with a nice diversity with a lot of technical cuts. Some stylists are really good at “zuzching” (god knows how you spell that) but not so good at the precision stuff. I had my hair cut from long to short ( above ears) and ended up having to go elsewhere to a different stylist to re-do. That was a long week walking around with that cut I can tell you. I’m resigned now to spending ££££ with my current guy because he’s so good and has never made me feel any less than great.

Electrox · 07/04/2022 08:00

The worst haircut I never asked for, but was given anyway, was also an inverted bob!

You have lovely hair in great condition, OP. I agree you should visit another salon and get the shape 'uninverted'. A very few long layers would allow a little more volume and texture too.
