There may be no such word.

Sorry that should say more than ‘fine”. Her aim, I think, is understandable and also perfectly legitimate, if we presume that she’s intending to show respect/not hog the limelight too much. However I just think there’s something, whatever it is, that stops it feeling authentic. Which I suppose might be the crux of it - perhaps she hasn’t yet grown into her own stature when it comes to formal/sombre events, so she always returns to type, which is the ‘uniform’. Nothing wrong with that, in and of itself, and maybe it will change as her status changes.

Nnique · 17/03/2022 16:58

Must make it clear that I really like Kate (from what little I actually know of her)! She comes across as a lovely person to me, even if she seems to take the overcompensating a little too far with that huge grin...It isn’t a criticism of her as a person at all. I just think she maybe should get a stylist. Or a different one!

RomainingCalm · 17/03/2022 17:10

The comment about the exhibition made me laugh! Maybe we could all get tickets when that happens and play "spot the difference"

We need a Royal S&B meet up with the instruction to 'meet by green coats wearing your tiaras'.

KillingMeDeftly · 17/03/2022 17:28

Zara's funnel-neck coats are a bit Ted Baker circa 2010,

KillingMeDeftly · 17/03/2022 17:29

@Nnique

I just lost a long post of (mostly ramblings, probably Hmm ) analysis...

Crux of it was that in many ways style is substance. I think what she’s trying to do is fine, but the problem is over time when it’s so prescriptive it has actually has the opposite effect of what I think her intentions are - it comes across as dumbed down dressing, without wit and without character. Which then in fact detracts from any gravitas she might have had, which in turn detracts from the gravitas of the event or occasion as well.

Something like that.

I know what you mean. I find "if it's green it must be Ireland", "tartan for Scotland" etc a bit lacking in imagination.

Let's hope she pulls out the stops for next week's Caribbean trip!

KillingMeDeftly · 17/03/2022 17:34

@Nnique

Think of future exhibitions...what an uninspiring thought.
Kate always looks well-presented but I can't see anyone willing to pay for an exhibition of her dresses in 20 years time like we do with Diana's.

Kate has worn a lot of nice stuff but it's really only her wedding dress and the Bond gown that stand out for me. Whereas Diana had lots of iconic outfits that I still remember.

But then there was never a royal quite like Diana before and hasn't been since either. Which the Queen is probably very happy about!

I've just come across these beauties. They belonged to the Von Thurn und Taxis family.
I think the sapphire tiara is a little large for me but I could probably find room for the Empire tiara if it hasn't already been claimed.
The lady wearing the ruby tiara is going all out don't you think 😀

I barely noticed the tiara because of the hair!

LadyEloise1 · 17/03/2022 18:41

Princess Anne looks rather smart at Cheltenham today.

Maireas · 17/03/2022 18:44

Ah. Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. Quite the character!
Interesting jewellery as well!

Such subtle and understated pieces 😆
Flintfarmhouse · 17/03/2022 18:55

Yes I think Diana used to really enjoy her clothes, whereas I get the impression with Kate that it's more "dress to live" than "live to dress"! She always looks immaculate and very professional though!

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 17/03/2022 19:15

I went to the exhibition of Diana's clothes at Kensington Palace and there was a selection of designers drawings for some of her outfits. She had hand written notes like "yes please but in red", or "shorter sleeves for this one". So I think she was very involved in her clothing selections and had a defined sense of what style/image she wanted to present.

Nnique · 17/03/2022 19:23

She could easily buy in some help though.

It’s clear that she’s much more comfortable in casual clothing and probably casual settings too. She really shines when she’s dressing for what she loves IMO - always looks great in those outdoorsy/sporting/active outfits. That’s where she feels naturally confident, i think, and her clothes for those occasions reflect that sense of ease.

It doesn’t matter one jot to me if she doesn’t actually enjoy fashion in and of itself - that’s fair enough and there’s absolutely no imperative that she must. We all know that there are a lot of other more important things to focus on. But IMO it would be good to get someone in who can design outfits for her that make the best of her. NOT in terms of looks, figure or fashion, paradoxically, but in terms of her. Who she is and what she represents - What she says or does would likely go much further if there is an authoritative element (not sure that’s what I’m actually trying to say) to her dress, instead of it making her look like she’s playing dress up a lot of the time. I know that sounds harsh...it’s meant more gently than that!

Perhaps this will come when she’s actually Princess of Wales (William will be titled Prince of Wales when Charles is King, won’t he?). She does have to be careful not to outshine female Royals senior to her and I admire the fact that she’s clearly mindful of that.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 17/03/2022 19:24

I like Kate’s coat today but like other posters I just can’t see past the many, many green coats she must own now. Perhaps a repeat with some striking new accessories might have worked a bit better and still been in line with a sombre mood (providing said accessories weren’t too outlandish).

gluenotsoup · 17/03/2022 20:01

Kate probably has enough green coats for us all to walk out wearing one, never mind meeting next to them 😂. Could come in handy for the heist..🤔. Can you imagine the headlines??

Maireas · 17/03/2022 20:13

@gluenotsoup - you are a genius!
That is absolutely what we'll wear on our jewel heist.
Kate's green coats. There are enough to go round.

gluenotsoup · 17/03/2022 21:02

😂it would be hilarious! Please say we can😳😂

MotherofPearl · 17/03/2022 21:42

I am afraid I really like Kate's coat today, though I do appreciate the point about having plenty of green coats already. I thought she looked really elegant, and I love both the colour and the collar. I quite like her clothes - not everything, but many of her outfits. But then I'm probably quite a boring dresser myself!

Eaumyword · 17/03/2022 21:57

I can't unsee the scene in The Thomas Crown Affair, with the painting heist, when the distraction to the police is all the men in bowler hats and briefcases walking round the museum.
That could be us in green coats and tiaras!Grin
I may be overthinking this...

gingercat02 · 17/03/2022 21:58

I'm Irish and I want Kate to go full Leprechaun for Paddy's Day
Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit.(Happy St Patrick's day to you) lovely Royal S&B ladies

KillingMeDeftly · 17/03/2022 22:01

I actually own a green coat! And Kate has the same one in pink 😆

So now I own Kate's coat, Meghan's silk shirt (also green) and a jumper I saw on CPV!
