I try not to buy clothes made by slaves. So no Shein for me.

TarcasticSwat · 27/02/2022 10:12

If you look at the reviews it tells you exactly how the sizes measure up in real life, there's photos of people in the clothes sometimes and there's comments on the items and ratings.

Flingingmelon · 27/02/2022 10:16

@Donson and @kimbyy

Just reading your posts - I have a sneaking feeling we may all know each other.

I think we can probably agree that no, we can't possibly know what's going on unless we are sat in the factory / mill / farm etc from dawn until dusk for every product, which is never going to happen. However there are enough suppliers out there who do actually agree that people should get paid their overtime and that poisoning their local water supply isn't the smart move. Western Europe don't have the monopoly on ethical sourcing.

Some suppliers and brands are trying, really trying. They need to be supported, especially at the moment with costs spiralling.

Shein is not one of those businesses.

Sweetandsaltycaroline · 27/02/2022 10:24

People need clothes, yes, for warmth and modesty, but you seem to be arguing that it’s a choice between Shein and no clothes at all (the same foolish argument used by posters upthread).

That is not my argument at all. I have literally said in the same post my DD gets clothes from boot fairs and de pop! (And also primark...which I'm not sure is a whole lot better) Whilst I think Shein practices are some of the worst, a lot of clothing companies have dubious ethics and I am pointing out that the ones that specifically market themselves as ethical are often beyond the budget of many teens (and adults)

Fizbosshoes · 27/02/2022 10:28

Whilst I don't condone unethical practices (and I personally don't buy from Shein) a lot of people use the term "fast fashion" as if everyone buying cheaper clothes is buying a new outfit every day and throwing it away after a few wears. I buy Primark stuff, and some of it has lasted 10 years + , I buy it when I need it and wear until it wears out. I don't see it as disposable.

TillyTopper · 27/02/2022 10:37

I bought a dress - not at all as advertised. It was shapeless, poor material and very poor fit. I won't buy from their again as I think their pics are nothing like what you get. Just my experience.

The video I posted up thread shows how operations like Shein use dodgy photography and filters on their website - I'm sure they aren't the only ones before anyone jumps on me - so the garment you get can often bear no resemblance.

Agree with a pp who pointed out the sheer scale of production. It's madness.

I'm really trying to make better buying choices and it's really difficult. Often means you end up not buying. Yes I'm on my iPhone right now but I'll use this until it's unusual (or I drop it down the loo again, this may happen sooner Grin) but in terms of a phone it's a compromise and sometimes that's the best you can do.

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 11:50

I'd say I compromise too. The items I've bought from shein I've had an idea of exactly what I wanted and couldn't find elsewhere. I checked the reviews thoroughly. Only one thing wasn't as expected and I sent it back. I mostly buy DD's leggings from primark. She goes through the knees of them constantly and they are the right balance of quality (thicker than H&M) and poultice that they are the best value for me. Apart from that a lot of the stuff i buy is from eBay etc

Hb12 · 27/02/2022 12:43

Honestly, it is hardly like anyone here would be naked if not for Shein, is it?!

No one is saying that but not everyone can afford to buy from expensive places so it would be that or primark for me. Which isn’t much better

2 points always spring to mind on these threads:

  1. quality is clearly very subjective, as you always get posters saying they are very happy with the quality of very cheap clothes, and others saying it’s awful, on the same thread. Personally I think people who are happy with the quality of Shein clothes have probably never seen or felt good quality clothes in real life Confused

  2. People who insist that they should have a right to buy slave made clothes like Shein as it’s all they can afford - what did you do before Shein existed?! Why do you think you’re entitled to buy new clothes? What’s wrong with charity shops, Depop, Vinted, Vestiaire collective, kilo or other vintage sales? People don’t apply the same logic to second hand cars or even furniture. Wouldn’t you rather have second hand quality than new cheap crap? And to the poster who says she gets good items from Shein because she spends hours reading reviews and hunting for the perfect item, wouldn’t that time be put to better use finding good second hand items?

IheartJKRowling · 27/02/2022 16:52

WTF is wrong with people who don't care that an actual human being is forced to work as a slave in China, in the 21st Century, so they can have cheap clothes? Not historical slavery but well documented and provable slavery of mainly children and women.

Shop in Sainsbury's at least it's trying to be ethical, Charity shops, Vinted, Depop, Ebay, Shpock, car boots, Facebook the list of places you can get ethical new and nearly new clothing cheaply or even free is literally endless.

Who cares though, buy crap from Shein and feel proud when you wear your latest, this seasons must have dress, top, jeans that it was made by a slave, a real person who doesn't even have the right to go to the toilet or eat when they want, who can't take a day of work if they are literally dying.

Statistically it will be a woman or child, so those of you saying you are buying for your teenagers just consider the item will probably have been made by someone even younger than your child, working a 70 hour week for penny's, who is also much loved by their parents who no doubt wanted more for their child than to be a slave.

otemporaomores · 27/02/2022 17:16

It is the worst out of all bad clothes companies, modern slavery,.workers are not being paid,.child's labour, dangerous working conditions, chemicals in fabrics..... no i wouldn't buy from them. Everyone and anyone who buys from them supports all above. If you can't afford to buy ethically sourced and produced clothes then don't buy clothes at all, save your money.

Mumsnet madness. Completely detached from reality. LET THEM EAT CAKE! And if they can’t afford cake, don’t buy food at all, save your money 🤣🤣🤣

BusterGonad · 27/02/2022 17:49

I don't know why anyone would order something from China, without seeing it, trying it on etc... Knowing it has a high chance of bring crap and then having to try to return it. How cheap are the clothes? Are they cheaper than Sainsbury or Asda stuff? I've never felt inclined to even look at the website.

DearlyBeloathed · 27/02/2022 17:53

Oh, are you identifying with the downtrodden French peasants of the 18th century, now? All because you might have to pay £20 for a dress instead of £10 from Shein? How you suffer!

Of course, if you had any sense you’d see very clearly who the downtrodden people are in this particular set of circumstances. Never mind that, though, eh? Your right to dirt cheap clobber is more important.

BabyTurtIe · 27/02/2022 19:12

what did you do before Shein existed?!

Primark, but not all of us have one local or can get out to it as it doesn’t have an online site. I’ve already said I don’t buy second hand clothes/shoes

I don't think the first point is accurate. I've bought from shein before, but a lot of my clothes are very good quality fabric that I pay a lot of money for. I'll spend lots on a winter coat, but a sports bra or vest I won't.

Also It's much different spending hours on a website in the comfort of one's own home, than having to actually go into town (more than one town often depending on where one lives) to hunt around charity shops etc, a lot more expense and inconvenience. I am not saying I agree with shein's ethics at all, I just don't think these points are accurate.

Iamthewombat · 27/02/2022 20:38

Are you claiming that the clothes from Shein are ‘very good quality’ though? That’s the point. People who think so probably don’t know what good quality means. The PP didn’t say that anybody who bought from Shein never buys anything else of better quality.

She did say, rightly, that anyone who buys from Shein prizes cheap clobber above human rights.

MyGPsurgeryisUseless · 27/02/2022 20:47

I’ve ordered a couple of jumpers and a top which my child has pinched.

Both ok I ordered a size bigger and they fit ok, have washed ok etc

Most of it doesn’t appeal to me 🤷‍♀️

No, thats' true. I have had some from Shein that have been nice fabrics though. Not designer quality obviously, but not cheap feeling, or very thin etc
