@Tillymintpolo I never said Primark was 100% ethical & of course there will be issues in their supply chain. However do you think they are subject to health & safety standards for their stores? Do their UK employees have rights under our employment laws? As UK high street destinations is Primark subject to certain taxes?

A580Hojas · 27/02/2022 08:32

I'm amazed at how many people are either ignorant about the ethical/environmental track record of Shein, or are sticking their heads in the sand, or they just couldn't give a shit.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 27/02/2022 08:32

We buy less clothes, but better. Not designer - Next, M&S, TK Maxx etc.

But people don't need to be shopping constantly. I have 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of work trousers and a work skirt. 7 tops and a few jumpers / jackets.

We only buy new when something has worn out.

Shops like SheIn only exist because people are constantly shopping, updating and chasing fashion.

Tillymintpolo · 27/02/2022 08:34

Primark uses sweat shops , as do Apple, Nike, Adidas and many others. You can’t claim that one is better when at the route of their business is human misery, exploitation and slavery.

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 08:37

If taxes are the issue do you use Amazon? Because a huge majority of the country do and they don't seem to get torn to shreds over doing so. The rest of the things listed such as health and safety in store and uk employment standards aren't applicable

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 08:38

Also a lot of the stuff in tk maxx is a cheaper standard made especially for the store, probably in sweat shops, they aren't just end of lines etc

Pootle40 · 27/02/2022 08:39

Not for me. If it's like Primark but online it will be shit.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 27/02/2022 08:40

OP , to answer your original question: it's hit and miss . I've got a few really nice pieces from there . Read the reviews and be prepared to send 50% back . It is what it is

Victoria1083 · 27/02/2022 08:42

Our actions have consequences and our greed for new clothes every couple of days has a massive impact on the environment. We keep hearing about ecological catastrophes and human rights abuses in the remote parts of the world but for some reason we just think “ it’s all ok, don’t worry, it’s not on our doorstep, so we can always set up a charity to help those poor people who are so mistreated by Shein and similar companies to make it all right again”. I urge you next time you are about to watch a haul video, to look for the True Cost of Fashion Video” instead.
I used to be a shopaholic and still absolutely love clothes but coming across videos like that helped to cure my addiction. I also realised that I don’t want to be manipulated into giving my hard earned money to the companies that only care about making quick profit at such enormous cost.

FrecklesMalone · 27/02/2022 08:45

I bought two things from them they were both shocking quality. Terrible cut and horrible material looking nothing like the picture. Avoid like the plague

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 08:47

I don't think I know anyone who shops every couple of days. As I said the items I've bought from shein I've had longer than the equally unethical phone in my hand that in using to post this. The clothing will likely last longer too as iPhones end up obsolete when you can't update them anymore and the batteries start to fail. A lot of people seem to pick and choose what's on and what's not

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 08:54

@Tillymintpolo you cannot say Primark is just as unethical or bad for the environment as Shein because it isn't.

The rest of the things listed such as health and safety in store and uk employment standards aren't applicable

Of course they are applicable when discussing businesses because it's about the whole business model 🙄

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 08:56

The point is the do not have a store or in employees. That's why it's not relevant. I doubt people in China or wherever producing things for primark are doing so under uk working standards

Primark uses sweat shops , as do Apple, Nike, Adidas and many others.

You cannot compare the above to Shein.

Just look at the fashion transparency index for the companies.

If you are going to shop there, at least own it & not pretend it's the same as Nike.

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:02

@Donson based on what?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 27/02/2022 09:03

I've been tempted in the past but never actually bought anything from there.

Have you heard of Vinted? I've recently started buying quality, excellent condition second hand (but barely used) clothes for my kids (boden, jojo etc) for great prices. Feels more ethical and who doesn't love a bargin?! Not sure I'll ever set food in a high street clothes shop again!

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:03

Why do you think it's not relevant when looking at the ethics & environmental impact of a brand?

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 09:04

@Donson

A lot of fast fashion brands have no real idea what goes on in the factories because they don’t own them - - they outsource to third parties and have little control. This way they can get the cheapest prices because the factories compete with eachother to offer low prices, often less than they can afford, to keep the retailer’s business. Then the ‘approved’ factories outsource to cheaper dodgy factories or sister factories that the Retailer have no idea about. It’s very murky and easy to turn a blind eye to what’s really going on.

SHEIN is basically like a supplier or factory that has turned itself into a fashion brand, selling directly to the public instead of via a retailer.

It’s all the cheapest cheapest tat, produced at massive human and environmental costs.

This - the high street brands are no more ethical just because there is a semi respectable middle man added in or a shiny fronted store that follow the minimum uk work standards when the clothes all come from the same place anyway
Iamthewombat · 27/02/2022 09:04

I bet they do, but they don’t care. Whilst the consumer wants a dress for £10 from Boohoo or Pretty Little Thing every couple of weeks, there’s no incentive to do things differently, is there? The buck stops with us. If consumers think that a dress should cost £10, or a bikini £5, brands and retailers will serve that demand and will offer derisory prices to manufacturers in Bangladesh and Cambodia and China. That’s how we ended up with horrors like the Rana Plaza.

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 09:05

Why do you think it's not relevant when looking at the ethics & environmental impact of a brand?

Because the clothes all come from people working in similar situations and have similar environmental impact in producing them. The uk side of it is just an additional extra

Iamthewombat · 27/02/2022 09:06

You are determined to hang on to your endless supply of cheap clothes at any cost, aren’t you? This time by claiming that every retailer is just as bad as Shein, in fact worse because of their ‘semi respectable middle men’.

FizzyBizz · 27/02/2022 09:07

I’ve found their blouses great for work. Wash well, decent quality, good range of styles and colours. Also their throw-on jersey blazers and cardigans.

Anything where you want a good, tailored fit - dresses, trousers - I've found crap and poorly made.

Sizing is a true to size for me. Their Large (12-14) fits me well and I’m a tall size 12.
