I don't have an endless supply of cheap clothes, I have a couple of cardigans that I've had for a couple of years and will certainly still have in another couple or more. I'm not determined to do anything I'm just not kiddo g myself that many of the other clothes or items sold with a respectable front are actually any better at the point of manufacture

Sweetandsaltycaroline · 27/02/2022 09:11

It is the worst out of all bad clothes companies, modern slavery,.workers are not being paid,.child's labour, dangerous working conditions, chemicals in fabrics..... no i wouldn't buy from them. Everyone and anyone who buys from them supports all above. If you can't afford to buy ethically sourced and produced clothes then don't buy clothes at all, save your money.

People still need clothes!!Confused
My teen DD made a few quite shitty purchases from Shein and while I'd prefer her not to she does actually need to wear clothes! Luckily she now prefers to buy stuff from depop or boot fairs but generally stuff marketed as ethical usually comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

MsTSwift · 27/02/2022 09:12

A friend investigated this for bbc years ago apparently Zara were most ethical that she found. We like vintage shopping much less guilt better quality and less guilt. Kilo sales are fun

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:12

This - the high street brands are no more ethical just because there is a semi respectable middle man added in or a shiny fronted store that follow the minimum uk work standards when the clothes all come from the same place anyway

Of course a brand that follows employment law in the UK is more ethical than one that doesn't have any transparency re its workers & doesn't follow labour laws. 😆

So a volte-face, no one claimed high street shops had excellent manufacturing ethics.

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:16

And in terms of manufacturing no one can compete with Shein

"In 2019, the company launched an average of 10,000 new products a month. Shein adds as many new designs in two months as Zara, the current industry leader, puts out in a whole year."

CrackerGal · 27/02/2022 09:20

And what about the "ethical" usually scandi kids clothing brands whose clothes are branded ethical but are constantly doing "drops" where they release different patterns of their clothing & these "ethical" mums are buying it all up every drop & some getting themselves into serious debt along the way. Not to mention the brands then selling the "old drop" clothes off for buttons.
Surely that's as unethical as you can get when you're dropping vast amounts of clothes every few months?

Yes, Shein have one of the worst reputations within the fashion world.

People need clothes, yes, for warmth and modesty, but you seem to be arguing that it’s a choice between Shein and no clothes at all (the same foolish argument used by posters upthread).

We need to be covered with garments but we don’t NEED to buy a plethora of stuff from places like Shein. Especially when we know the human and environmental consequences.

So if shein expanded and opened a uk store - paid those workers the minimum wage and followed the basic employment laws while doing everything else over seas exactly as they did before they'd somehow be better. Strange logic!

@liveforsummer have you read the links I posted?

Tillymintpolo · 27/02/2022 09:39

www.ethicalconsumer.org/company-profile/nike-inc

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 09:40

I did read them. I also searched primark which got a sad face and a not good enough rating. The site does appear to be an American one too. I'm not sure if that's relevant, if suppliers are different etc

Tillymintpolo · 27/02/2022 09:41

The link I’ve posted has a different view of Nike

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:43

@Tillymintpolo & what do they say about Shein?

Tillymintpolo · 27/02/2022 09:45

Look it up yourself

Also interesting how many brands share factories in the developing world. They are no better than each other.

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:47

I did read them. I also searched primark which got a sad face and a not good enough rating.

Which is not the same as Sheins rating is it? I've not said Primark is great, I just said it's better than Shein. Like 1 is higher than 0.

The site does appear to be an American one too. I'm not sure if that's relevant,

Nike is an American company & Sheins biggest market is the US.

liveforsummer · 27/02/2022 09:49

From what I read primark received a marginally better rating due to lack of evidence rather than evidence that it was actually better. The phrase was repeated multiple times

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:49

@Tillymintpolo It won't let me without a subscription.

marginally better is better though. Which was my point. There is some transparency with Primark, there isn't any with Shein.

But I guess if it makes you feel justified then crack on.

kimbyy · 27/02/2022 09:56

@Donson I'm a former buyer who worked at Topshop & Asos for years. I'm fully aware of the issue with a supply chains & outsourcing etc however high street shops have to have some transparency & Shein doesn't have any.

whenwillthemadnessend · 27/02/2022 09:58

It's ok. I tend to by things like crop tops for dd abs stretchy things that don't need the perfect fit.

She seems happy with the stuff but she is very slim.

For myself I've bought a tank top. Love the style but the quality isn't there. But it's a fashion item so I doubt I'll use it for many years.

I'm
Too scared to try jeans etc as I'd imagine fit may be an issue.

I did return once and got my money back so that was ok.
