@isthismylifenow you can return items to shein now just tick you want to pay a few quid extra for possible returns at checkout now. Might be a newer option though.

BabyTurtIe · 26/02/2022 19:12

All the people saying not to buy from there not everyone can afford to shop in the expensive shops!

I'm not in UK and we have to pay for the transport fees to return any items, and that costs a fortune.

So we can return items, it just isn't financially viable to do it.

CrackerGal · 26/02/2022 19:20

@isthismylifenow ah I'm not in the UK either but they do it for my country, that's a shame they don't do it for everywhere!

UpintNorth · 26/02/2022 19:21

Interested in the moral/ethical comments, off to have a Google on them as recently ordered for the first time….Shock

CrackerGal · 26/02/2022 19:23

Yes exactly! And 🙄 to the person who said if you you can't afford to buy ethically sourced clothes don't by clothes at all.
Seriously.
Some people live on another very privileged planet I think 😄

CrackerGal · 26/02/2022 19:24

That was replying to you my last post. Totally agree.
CrackerGal · 26/02/2022 19:26

@Karenina40

It is the worst out of all bad clothes companies, modern slavery,.workers are not being paid,.child's labour, dangerous working conditions, chemicals in fabrics..... no i wouldn't buy from them. Everyone and anyone who buys from them supports all above. If you can't afford to buy ethically sourced and produced clothes then don't buy clothes at all, save your money.

Seriously?
If people can't afford to buy ethical clothes don't buy clothes at all?
You mean ever?
It sounds to me like you're speaking from a place of immense privilege.

Chishnfips · 26/02/2022 19:26

Cheap fabrics, polluting production methods, stealing artists designs and using child labour pushing out 700 - 1000 new items every single day. They are the absolute pits of fast fashion encouraging clothing as disposable items creating huge numbers of carbon emissions. They don't even retail in their own country China where they manufacture the stuff because its awful product. It is entirely exported to the rest of the world for it to end up in landfil 2 weeks later.

Sunseasun · 26/02/2022 19:33

No, there’s a reason it’s cheap, they treat their workers like shit

Sunseasun · 26/02/2022 19:34

And the haul videos on tik Tom make me feel sick

LifeIsWhat · 26/02/2022 19:36

I ordered once, they are not bad in general. I returned 20% of all purchase.
However, I will not buy anything from them again for two reasons:

  1. It is Made in China.
Especially in a way China is supporting Russia through purchasing their energy and agriculture product, and one of China's the biggest income is from exporting cheap stuff to the West. So I felt that it would be hypocritical of me to support Ukraine with words while buying cheaper goods made in China. Of course this is just me, I fully understanding that Chinese products are entrenched in our everyday life and it is hard to stop totally, however, fashion, at least to me, is a nice to have, rather than necessity. So I will start from there.
  1. It is so bad for the environment. I was shocked to see the huge mountains of abandoned clothes in junk yard and children play on top them...

So from this year, I will buy 2nd hand from vinted, and hope it helps.

If you’re using an iPhone then you can’t comment on Shein’s ethics.

Shein is one of many

I know only on MN 😂😂 I think people outside would disapprove of us just not buying clothes!
DelilahBucket · 26/02/2022 19:47

I've ordered lots from them but my last order was really disappointing. I always check the sizing through the reviews and it's usually accurate, but I ended up with a top that was about 12 inches wider than advertised and listed as none returnable, and a t-shirt for DH that had really short sleeves, ridiculously short. I did end up returning them for free, and their customer service is good. I bought three tops at the same time, all of which bobbled on the first wear, didn't even make it as far as the washing machine.
These days I'd rather buy older secondhand brands. I'm sick of poor quality clothing that everywhere bangs out these days, even the expensive stuff.

Aren’t some people hilarious? There’s clearly a lot of people out there with a hell of a lot more time and money than me.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 26/02/2022 19:52

@Badabook76 & @BabyTurtle just not idea at all have they. Thing is, top brands still get made in shoddy conditions. They're just better at hiding it.

ToooOldForThis · 26/02/2022 19:55

Total mix, I put in a pair of jeans with the last order I did for dd - the dresses she ordered were horrific quality, the jeans were a real pleasant surprise.

Where would anyone suggest for clothes for dd14 that are the same kind of style as shein but slightly less shitty?

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 26/02/2022 19:56

My dd has. A few bits are nice but most is cheap and nasty and synthetic. And terrible for the planet.

Babadook76 · 26/02/2022 19:56

I couldn’t be arsed to research which expensive brands are considered unethical at the moment, but yes, there’s not a lot of difference between even some really expensive ones and the really cheap ones.

WandaThePanda · 26/02/2022 21:56

All the people saying not to buy from there not everyone can afford to shop in the expensive shops!

I earn £10k/year and very definitely can’t afford expensive shops. I shop in charity shops, eBay and occasionally save up for the odd garment from an ethical clothing company (People Tree, Community Clothing etc) because I’d sooner wear the same ancient jeans and hoodie every day than support slavery and pointless ecological destruction by shopping at places like Shein.

I’d really urge people to think more about what they’re supporting when they patronise these companies. And yes, I’m aware my phone etc was likely not entirely ethically sourced, but we can all make more positive choices where we can.
