Cardi’s to go over midi dresses?

MadameSapphire · 26/02/2022 09:26

Realise that I a few great cardi’s would be really useful in my wardrobe. Has anyone seen any lovely ones? Open to colours, but neutrals would probably work well... TIA.

Don’t know why I’m responding - IMVHO there’s always a better option than a cardigan!

Such as? (Serial cardigan wearer who is fed up of looking frumpy…)
TottersBlankly · 26/02/2022 12:52

Well …

A jumper (either big and slouchy or tiny and playful) always looks more intentional and less prissy.

A bold shacket - heavy fabric, strong shape - is lovely as a contrast in scale. (Longing to wear my already nearly three years old choice with grungy shorts, somewhere where no one will see my regrettable knees.)

Leather jacket, if well chosen. (I mean, your face has to be well chosen. They’re a bit unforgiving but I envy people who look good in one.)

An extra large hoody, preferably pre-owned or ancient, very thick. Surprisingly flattering.

Tweed jacket, always.

(The only thing worse than a cardigan is a denim jacket. ‘Tragic’ is the word they bring to my mind …)

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2022 18:00

On denim jackets, cardis and dresses, Totters has nailed it. I think cardigans basically kill dresses. It's the sort of thing you used to see in episodes of Morse

MintMocha · 26/02/2022 18:08

Oh crumbs. I was about to recommend the seasalt Vanessa cardigan, which I wear over dresses! But frumpy and prissy are probably quite good words to describe me, along with fat armed, so I really do need something over the top, as most summer dresses are sleeveless or at least very short sleeved.

Maybe I need to try out hoodies, as I don't know what a shacket is, and I definitely don't own leather, tweed, or demin jackets of any sort.

MintMocha · 26/02/2022 18:10

but I liked the Vanessa one as it's very light/thin, 3/4 sleeves, and quite short, so doesn't cover up too much of the dress. And if you get a fairly big size, it comes round a decent amount in the front without constantly sliding back at the side of your boobs.

RampantIvy · 26/02/2022 18:11

I wouldn't want to wear a leather jacket or denim jacket in the office though.

scootalooser · 26/02/2022 18:13

What about a knitted vest? I'm prepared to be shot down here.

oviraptor21 · 26/02/2022 18:13

What is this for OP - casual, work, going out?

sunshinesupermum · 26/02/2022 18:16

I don't think the Vanessa is frumpy at all, unlike button-through cardis. And what is wrong with short denim jackets? Maybe I'm just a frump and never knew it!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 26/02/2022 18:16

I get what you mean about cardis but if you’re in an office in the spring or summer you need something with a short sleeved dress. I dont think a shacket, denim jacket or hoody can work in an office so interested in alternatives.

DinnoWoman · 26/02/2022 18:20

Blazer? Primark had loads in various colours last year.

I have this and I love it.

It's big and slouchy.

I think cardigans have a place, depends on the look you are going for I guess.

Short denim jackets are very dated. Oversized stone washed 80s vibe are quite in but it's quite a niche look.
Carbiesdreamhouse · 26/02/2022 20:14

I've just Googled shackets. They seem to be lumbar jack shirts. If I wear them on a video call people will assume I'm in my nightie

GettingStuffed · 26/02/2022 20:14

I have a gorgeous cardi, it's a swing shape one with the swing being made of widening rib. I cannot for the life of me remember where I bought it, but it a shop that mainly caters for the older customer but has some stuff for younger people.

I have this cardi in pretty much every colour. It works with dresses but also great over a crew neck t-shirt or a Breton top.

padsi1975 · 26/02/2022 20:24

What would work over dresses if not a cardi (for indoors when you're chilly)? I love cardigans..Smile

Oblomov22 · 26/02/2022 20:29

I'm looking for something like the Vanessa. Is there a cheaper good version?

Gonnagetgoing · 26/02/2022 20:33

I’d rather wear a cardi with a dress in an office than freeze!

Carbiesdreamhouse · 26/02/2022 20:44

Whistles jersey blazers are good for the office. Like a heavy cardi with a bit more structure but not as estate-agenty as a proper blazer.

EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 21:29

OP I must be very dull because I'd go for Seasalt as well. I can't find any I like either.

I like the idea of a shacket but I think they look outdoorsy. Do other posters wear shackets indoors? Maybe I'm just hopelessly out of date.

I also think cardigans are more practical than jumpers, especially if rumours of spring like weather are true.

MintMocha · 26/02/2022 21:29

The vanessa cardi is often available on ebay from the outlet store or various other boutique stores that carry Seasalt stuff but don't sell out every season, so you can often get previous season colours. I have about four of them in various shades.

but not black. I wish they'd do a proper deep black one.

WandaThePanda · 26/02/2022 21:44

Don’t understand this board sometimes - who in the world could actually be offended by a denim jacket, but leather or tweed (also both pretty bland/inoffensive) is somehow OK?! V strange! Confused
