Cardi’s to go over midi dresses?

MadameSapphire · 26/02/2022 09:26

Realise that I a few great cardi’s would be really useful in my wardrobe. Has anyone seen any lovely ones? Open to colours, but neutrals would probably work well... TIA.

Loving the green and light blue Arket ones. How well do they wash- will they cope with a cold gentle wool wash in the machine?

midsomermurderess · 26/02/2022 21:48

It's not about being offended. No one said anything was offensive. It's just people expressing different opinions. There isn't a style and beauty board 'mind'.

I've loved the fleece cardigan I got from Aesthetic Laundry this winter. It's kind of in between a cardi and a jacket and so warm and soft.

I'm also a fan of Woolovers and their open cardigans, I have a couple of the longer ones in cashmere and merino and cotton ones for summer.

I’ve just googled shacket too. I’m
Short with big boobs, those things would make me look huge!

HippeePrincess · 26/02/2022 21:57

Things I might wear over a midi dress include an open shirt, a shaket, military jacket (have a nice soft one that's from elsies attic), a pink and red animal print v long open cardigan (also elsies attic can't find a link) , blazer, leather jacket.

You will have to prize my denim jacket out of my cold dead hands

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/02/2022 22:05

@FluffyWhiteCloudsFloatBy I wash the Arket cardis in the machine on a wool cycle. I have the light blue, pink, navy, brown, beige, and orange versions, I buy one every year and the first one is still good as new. (A couple of mine were from Depop actually, they often pop up there.) I’m a UK 10 and wear S.

I have this and I love it.

It's big and slouchy.

I think cardigans have a place, depends on the look you are going for I guess.

Ooo I love this! Cardis are the best. I don't know what some of you are on?!
EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 22:35

I have three black cardis in my wardrobe!

How much do posters spend on a cardi or sweater? Just curious.

HippeePrincess · 26/02/2022 22:58

@EmmaH2022 I'm glad you asked this as I almost came out in a rash at the ones linked, especially the boring and plain ones on the boden website.

Absolute maximum of £30 here and it would have to be something I really liked for me to spend that on a cardi.

Well I bought the one I linked to for £68. But that's the most I've spent. Normally I'm more Zara.

I also like the look of the Emmy Design Sweden cardigans, but they are mad expensive.

AllThingsareMystic · 26/02/2022 23:15

You need a lovely blazer!

None of those would be suitable to wear to work though. I need a cardigan because we have stupidly cold aircon at work.

Don't know why they can't just open the windows instead (mutter grumble,)

SpamIAm · 26/02/2022 23:29

I bloody love a cardi.

With a midi or longer dress I'd wear a cropped cardi.

Depends on your shape and wear your waist is I suppose, but if I wore a midi dress with a blazer or shacket or any of the other hip length suggestions here, I'd just look like a big shapeless blob.

EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 23:40

Hippee same here. I wonder if the pricier ones wash and wear better but I'm going to guess no!

dudsville · 26/02/2022 23:55

I've added cardigans to my wardrobe for the last 3 years. I have arket, toast and one john Lewis own brand, all chunky/slouchy and some cropped some hip length. I like then to have pockets and big buttons. I go for plain or muted mixed yarns so I can use them over anything. I think they toughen up what would otherwise be quite sweet twee dresses. Paired with chunky shoes and boots. This isn't everyone's esthetic but it pleases me.

An extra large hoody, preferably pre-owned or ancient, very thick. Surprisingly flattering

No. Hoodies are not "surprisingly flattering". They are hideous garments,

Putting a jumper on top of a dress is pointless- why bother with a dress if you're going to hide the top half.

TooManyPJs · 27/02/2022 02:03

I LOVE a cardigan. I have billions of them. Wear them over most things almost everyday. Comfy warm and imo (and my husband's) I look nice in them. They give you a layer to take on and off.

Blazers on the other hand are usually hideous (imo) and v restrictive. I wouldn't want to wear one to work in place of a cardi tbh.

The cardigan that goes with a dress really depends on the dress. And the right one also depends on your shape. I mostly wear crew neck cardigans, and sometimes waterfall cardigans (which are for me incredibly slimming). Other styles would probably work for other shapes and other dresses.

Makes it a different look. Makes fashion more sustainable - don't need lots of different skirts and dresses, buy some dresses and have the double as skirts. Makes sense to me
Grasping · 27/02/2022 07:28

I would wear a very long cardi over a midi dress. No buttons.

Billandben444 · 27/02/2022 07:35

I wear cropped cards over maxi/midi length as it gives me some shape - anything longer makes me look and feel like a blob. I've bought some over the years in Monsoon sale and they wash beautifully and would never pay more than £30. Mix and match colours, patterns and textures and push up the sleeves of chunky knits.

RampantIvy · 27/02/2022 09:03

Who wears tweed these days? The only people I have seen wearing tweed recently were some of the farmers at the local agricultral show.

An extra large hoody, preferably pre-owned or ancient, very thick. Surprisingly flattering

Erm, no. They aren't flattering at all and just look wrong with a dress IMO. Maybe a teenager or student could get away with it, but at 63 I would just look like a bag lady.

And like another pp you would have to prise my denim jacket from my dead body. I find it so practical as it has deep pockets so I don't need to carry a handbag around.
