Cardi’s to go over midi dresses?

Realise that I a few great cardi’s would be really useful in my wardrobe. Has anyone seen any lovely ones? Open to colours, but neutrals would probably work well... TIA.

Who wears tweed these days? The only people I have seen wearing tweed recently were some of the farmers at the local agricultral show

I have several tailored, fitted tweed jackets, including an electric blue Harris Tweed peplum jacket lined in green silk which I wear with dresses. Denim on the other hand.....

Nitgel · 27/02/2022 09:37

I have a few long cardugans from free people thR look nice either longer dresses, for spring I like wearing linen shirts with dresses

JoanOgden · 27/02/2022 09:45

This is an issue that always bothers me. I don't like wearing a blazer at work as it's uncomfortable under a normal coat plus a bit dressy for my office. I do wear cardigans but am aware that they make me look like even less cool than I usually do.

KimikosNightmare · 27/02/2022 09:49

I wouldn't wear a blazer ever. I'm not a 100% sure what people are meaning but if it's what I think they mean- then no. I wouldn't wear a blazer over a dress,

diamondsandrose · 27/02/2022 10:07

This thread is hilarious . The vitriol!

My take - yes agree a cardigan type thing is required for when it's colder/spring and agree it's hard to find the right one

The very thick pre worn hoody over a flowery dress to me would look very odd , maybe I'm old. Maybe on a young supermodel ? Makes me think of the classics thread with the wandering through the asylum gardens !

Love a denim /pleather /leather jacket or chunky cardigan , def no waterfalls. Agree re estate agent blazer , is there a good midway between cardigan and blazer that's not lunatic asylum Grin

diamondsandrose · 27/02/2022 10:13

Oh and electric blue tweed peplum over a dress would def not be my taste , too fancy and not keen on any form of tweed , I'm Scottish so feels like country dancing outfit , I'll stick with my saddo Warehouse fitted denim I've had since late nineties it fits like a dream , perfect soft denim. No weird rips just nicely soft and faded. Yes prob seen as middle aged but I'm 46. But no good for work.

Do we need a blardigan ? Soft blazer made of cardigan stuff ?

Grasping · 27/02/2022 10:15

Blazers don’t suit me.
Believe me, I’ve tried.

oviraptor21 · 27/02/2022 10:30

An extra large hoody, preferably pre-owned or ancient, very thick. Surprisingly flattering

Erm, no. They aren't flattering at all and just look wrong with a dress IMO. Maybe a teenager or student could get away with it, but at 63 I would just look like a bag lady.

Oh dear. I quite like a hoody over a dress. A maxi dress for me. Chunky boots. Wrong side of 50. I definitely don't look like a bag lady. Very comfy. Very casual. Flattering for me - I think the key may be in the length and shape of the skirt part though.
What's not to like?!

I live in Scotland. Denim jackets over dresses looks extremely dated to me, but I dislike denim generally. It's simultaneously such a dull and uninteresting fabric but somehow manages to be the focal point of an outfit.

I really don't understand the point of wearing hoodies or jumpers over a dress- what's the point of hiding the fact you're wearing a dress?

For most dresses I'd wear a cropped cardigan, and in warmer weather one with 3/4 sleeves or a fitted, tailored jacket but definitely not a "blazer"

EvelynBeatrice · 27/02/2022 11:03

I think the right cardigan can look great on the right person. I have never subscribed to the view that all of one type of a garment are awful eg cardigans for all people. It's just a jersey with buttons!
I like a soft flexible jersey cardigan-ish blazer for work. Good with jeans but equally, if you get the length right, with midi dresses and can make the last look like more suitable office wear. Whistles do them. I've also had a couple from Joules in the past. Heritage of Scotland have very tailored jacket looking cashmere cardies in sale at moment.

VerityPJohnson · 27/02/2022 11:12

I've got over 30 cardigans, mainly crew neck, the type you wear in a twin-set - they suit my figure rather than make me look cool or fashionable.

My favourites are from Dunedin cashmere.

🎤 and when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
I looked again and saw just two posters...🎤

The rest of us are clearly happy with our cardis! Grin

RampantIvy · 27/02/2022 12:22

What's not to like?!

I just don't like the look on me. It doesn't suit me.

An outside hoodie with leggings or skinny jeans is a better look on me.

QueenCelestia · 27/02/2022 12:56

Shackets and oversized hoodies etc don't really work with midi dresses surely? I would just look swamped. Fat Face usually have quite a range of cardis although I usually try and get them in the sale as I find full-price a bit overpriced for what they are.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 27/02/2022 13:21

I have lots from Fat Face in various colours that have lasted for years now. I agree, nothing wrong with a cardi

ConfusedParticle · 27/02/2022 15:49

@midsomermurderess

On denim jackets, cardis and dresses, Totters has nailed it. I think cardigans basically kill dresses. It's the sort of thing you used to see in episodes of Morse
which is EXACTLY what i like!

i guess there's no consensus on what works for any of is, and barely anything is truly dated now, depending upon whether it works for you.

Ive recently got into stuff from the 20's, inspired by embroidered gowns and flowing silk. Not going to find stuff like that at ASOS, but ebay has been a treat!

Personally i think some cardigans are gorgeous - depending upon the style and material. Some not so much, and the drab ones tend to be that classic shape with full buttons and a slightly fitted waist. Basically all cardi's from uniqlo feel drab to me, like that twon set sort of style.

midsomermurderess · 27/02/2022 16:31

That's fine, @ConfusedParticle.

TinaYouFatLard · 27/02/2022 16:40

Ooh I love a nice cardi. Thanks to this thread I now own two more from Cara & The Sky - the lovely chunky one linked and a cropped pink one!

I also look awful in a blazer - they look like fancy dress costumes for some reason.

lugeforlife · 27/02/2022 16:48

I have just ordered a 'Blazigan' (loving that) from M&S. it's described as a knitted Blazer in what looks like a lovely inky blue colour.

I debated long and hard - I suit a blazer but live quite a casual lifestyle and even in the 2 days max a week office we're almost always proper dressed down. But I wanted an extra layer with a bit more shape than a cardi as I have no shape of my own atm.

This could be the answer to my dreams or it could be a total disaster. They do have a couple of soft jersey blazers in but colours weren't great for me.

Jeez there are some very aggressive people on this thread I think cardigans can bring out the worst in some people in more than one way , I feel the need to go on the wind up

Blardigans do not go under coats , agreed but are we thinking ahead to spring when ideally we don't wear coats ? Maybe they would BE the coat and until then it's back to the drawing board

Hoody over a dress would just look pathetic especially a thick ancient one , does the bottom of the dress just dangle out the bottom of it ?

Tweed is hideous full stop

Cropped cardigans are surely for toddlers no ?

Denim jackets will never die no matter what anyone says NA NA NA NA NA

GrandPrismatic · 27/02/2022 18:25

God I bloody love a nice fitted cashmere cardi.

evilharpy · 27/02/2022 19:18

OP, can you link to or post some photos of the type of dresses you wear so we can find something that would work?

Have you thought about wearing something under the dress rather than over it? Like a Uniqlo Heattech top?

evilharpy · 27/02/2022 19:21

@ChiefInspectorParker

I love cardigans, and would wear a cardi or a jumper over a dress. No disrespect to blazers, shackets and the like, but for me it all gets a bit complicated, as I can’t wear a coat/jacket over a blazer or shacket, and I think blazers can be ageing if you’re not careful. I’m also short, with short arms, so am easily swamped, and need buttons or the cardigan just flaps around getting in my way.

The denim jacket question is a good one - I’ve only ever had one, I got it from Oasis in 2001, it comes and goes out of fashion but I don’t think I’m feeling it for this year. It’s a very useful garment though.

Denim jackets will never die, I refuse to believe it. They go around in circles. I have a very bogstandard lightish wash one from H&M that I would still wear over a summer dress, and a darker more fitted one from Miss Sixty that is definitely out of fashion but fits me so well that I'm hanging onto it for when it inevitably comes back in.

I keep looking at oversized men's Levi's ones from the 90s on Vinted, maybe one of the sherpa-lined ones.

EmmaH2022 · 27/02/2022 20:48

“ but for me it all gets a bit complicated, as I can’t wear a coat/jacket over a blazer or shacket”

Exactly. I like shakers but see them as coats in a way. I don’t know how warm they normally are?
