Cardi’s to go over midi dresses?

MadameSapphire · 26/02/2022 09:26

Realise that I a few great cardi’s would be really useful in my wardrobe. Has anyone seen any lovely ones? Open to colours, but neutrals would probably work well... TIA.

Shackets

Autocorrect not happy with that word

diamondsandrose · 27/02/2022 21:38

Shackets are weird , can't put a coat over them , cold on their own , what goes underneath ( definitely not a bloody maxi dress anyways)

evilharpy · 27/02/2022 21:47

I have a couple of shackets. My favourite is from Pull & Bear, it's lined and sort of very slightly padded so it's really warm. I just wear it over a t shirt or plain scoop neck long sleeve top with jeans, but I can't imagine wearing it over a dress.

Littleguggi · 27/02/2022 21:49

I think it depends on the style of the maxi and where you are wearing it to/ the occasion/ time of day.

For example if I'm doing the school run I'd throw a denim jacket over my dress, if I am going out for dinner then maybe a cropped cardi, if I am going shopping then a big slouchy cardi. I don't think there is one rule.

Littleguggi · 27/02/2022 21:50

I would never wear a shacket over a maxi, whoever suggested that!

diamondsandrose · 27/02/2022 22:06

Someone up the thread recommended it , also a baggy hoody 🤷🏼‍♀️

RampantIvy · 27/02/2022 22:08

Who decides what is in fashion or not?

For example every time I read on S & B that skinny jeans are out I see the streets full of women in skinny jeans and the shops full of skinny jeans.

I have never seen anyone in a midi dress with an outsize hoodie or shacket over it. I don't see women wearing tweed jackets. Is it a city/London thing only? Maybe I live in an unfashionable part of the country.

I only bought my denim jacket last year and am determined to get my money's worth and will continue to wear it when the weather is warm enough. IMO a denim jacket is a classic and I don't view them as dated, and I don't wear any of my clothes for just one season.

I will wear last summer's midi dresses this summer as well becasue I like them.

TottersBlankly · 27/02/2022 22:33

In all honesty I wasn’t specifically thinking of midi dresses when I extolled the virtues of hoodies. I’d never owned one until lockdown and had rather disdained them - but I’ve been surprised at how often I reach for mine. (Uniqlo cheap.). It’s made me want a more luxurious version - which I might well wear in Spring over a silk slip dress or skirt or some contrastingly delicate trousers. Possibly not over the huge flowery frock I need to get more wear out of this year.

Fedupsotired · 27/02/2022 22:45

@TottersBlankly I couldn't wear a hoodie over a dress, I've not got enough bum. It's the same issue I have with maxi dresses, I just don't have the figure to wear them! I'd look too lanky and misshapen

Do you wear your shackets indoors?
evilharpy · 28/02/2022 07:21

@EmmaH2022 I do if it's cold!

That’s an astute observation. Stylishness that completely ignores current fashion always come across as eccentric.

HeadNorth · 28/02/2022 08:07

I've bought a cardigan off the back of this thread Grin To me, shackets are super frump, as is tweed, but I live in the countryside so there is much shacket and tweed wearing alongside cord trousers, Dubarry boots and black labs. It is not the look for me.

I don't actually see how anyone could get through a Scottish summer without a cardy. Pulling a jumper on and off all the time will spoil your make-up and ruffle your hair and belive me, on any summer day in Scotland it is likely to be cardy on/cardy off/cardy on ad infinitum. A wee jacket can also work, but a blazer looks too corporate for a breezy summer vibe - hence the enduring appeal of the demin jacket. I'm not feeling the hoodie love from an aesthetic perspective- they are great when I go hillwalking but that is definitely not a stylish look.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting my lambswool Seasalt cardy via fleabay - ethical recycled fashion and cosy too - what's not to like?

RampantIvy · 28/02/2022 08:13

I could have written your post @HeadNorth. The same applies to a Pennine summer. Round here farmers wear tweed, jackets are too formal and corporate and, IMO a shacket or outsize hoodie will never look stylish over a midi dress Grin

Floisme · 28/02/2022 10:52

If it's one of those floral voluminous midis then I think it depends on whether you want a cardigan that complements the shape or something to counteract all the flowers and frills. Ideally of course, you'd do both but I'm not sure it's possible. Me, I'd be in the second camp so I'd go for something with a masculine vibe e.g. a blazer (but not fitted - shaped like a man's) or a men's cardigan or yes, a hoody.
I accept some of you will think that sounds dreadful but like I say, my priority would be to tone down the fussiness.

I don't own a dress like this but I do like to look.

I don't understand cardigan hate, it's like saying you don't like coats.
I also love tweed.

Tanaqui · 28/02/2022 15:16

My gorgeous 16 and 19 Yr old nieces were wearing bog white hoodies over long floral dresses last summer and looked amazing! However, I prefer a more 1940s cardi over midi dress vibe for myself. I also think the maxi with denim jacket will have another summer - not super fashionable but a good practical look. I might try the plai
tank top over floral midi that I have seen on a couple of mannequins this year, but it might veer too young on me, we will see. It's nice to have options!

Tanaqui · 28/02/2022 15:19

Big white hoodies,not bog ones!

KimikosNightmare · 28/02/2022 17:06

@ChiefInspectorParker

Who decides what is in fashion or not?

The $64,000 question!

The other question is whether you think it’s important. I think it’s very hard to be stylish without a nod to current (ish) fashions.

It's style, it's got nothing to do with fashion.

Some posters think denim jackets or hoodies are more stylish over a dress than a cardigan. I disagree (a lot) For a 1940s or 50s style dress, I think a fitted , cropped cardigan is infinitely better. More a more boho dress- a slouchy cardigan.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2022 17:17

I have this dress that I bought last year, and love wearing it with a navy V neck cardigan or a denim jacket. I don't care if I look dated.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2022 19:40

£1690 for a cardigan. You're having a laugh!

Ddot · 28/02/2022 20:20

Depends on the look your young for, I like an oversized look but just buy a larger size. You just have to make sure it has dropped shoulders. A nice boxy jumper would look cute too

Yes, I didn't realise it was as long ago as that but there was definitely a period when cardigans ruled, and a jacket looked stiff and corporate and out of touch.

I applaud anyone who can separate style from fashion. I might like to think I'm more about style but I know fashion has a huge influence on what I see as 'stylish' at any given time. I find it fascinating.
