Cardi’s to go over midi dresses?

Realise that I a few great cardi’s would be really useful in my wardrobe. Has anyone seen any lovely ones? Open to colours, but neutrals would probably work well... TIA.

I agree that fashion and style aren't always the same. For me, I don't think wearing an oversized hoodie or jumper over a dress looks stylish. It might be fashionable, but it isn't stylish.

To me style is about wearing shapes and colours that suit you, that fit properly and make you look good. It might or might not be fashionable.

I will continue to wear my denim jacket this year when it is warm enough because it suits me (and is practical), even if the fashion police think it looks dated.

But I don't think what suits me is some kind of objective fact. I think it changes according to fashion. I loved high waisted pleated trousers in the 80s, love them again now and during the decades in between I thought they made my arse look huge - which they do but they also emphasise my waist, which I like at the moment. I've not worn skinny jeans for a while but I get my one pair out of the cupboard sometimes, for curiosity, and I'm Shock at how out of proportion I look.

I used to think I was smarter than fashion but seeing so many trends come around, go out and come back again has blown that idea out of the water. It's been very humbling.

I agree that the lines are blurred between style and fashion. I used to be a bit snooty about the concept of "fashion" too, but flo is right I think - what suits you or is stylish isn't objective fact and shifts according to fashion!

"Does my bum look big in this?" was the refrain of the Nineties - having an ample arse was considered the worst thing. My friends and I wore low-waisted jeans from Miss Sixty to "balance out" our silhouette. Nowadays emphasis has shifted back to small waists + big bums. My teenage nieces wear high waisted jeans or tight leggings to show off this part of their body. They look nice and their clothes fit, but certainly wouldn't have been considered "stylish" in my youth.

Anyway, sorry I haven't been the slightest bit of help re cardis and midis, but the thread took an interesting turn!

@ChiefInspectorParker

It's style, it's got nothing to do with fashion.

I beg to differ!

Love cardigans, though. I remember many years ago (grunge era?) reading in Vogue that it was deemed acceptable to wear a cardigan to work instead of a jacket. A shift from the aftermath of 80s power dressing.

@ChiefInspectorParker - I love cardigans too and have worn plain black ones for years to work - because I get cold easily. Mostly from Zara etc. Most office workers do this. A jacket in most offices is too formal and stiff to wear. I did buy a waterfall cardigan once but ditched it as really not my style.

I did have a couple of nice cropped ones from Louche (Joy) which were red and navy and had poppers up the front, also a neon (sort of!) yellow pointelle one for summer from Monsoon and a duck egg blue one from Emily & Finn. A few years back I had some lovely Warehouse ones in yellow and pale pink with broderie anglais and cropped which were for summer. I've also had Brora ones in navy and black.

I have this cardi in pretty much every colour. It works with dresses but also great over a crew neck t-shirt or a Breton top.

That's a lovely cardi 😊

@Gonnagetgoing I've also had Brora ones in navy and black.
Talk to me about Brora…I’ve seen a couple of really cute cardis online but OMG the cost…are they worth it? Will they last me 20 years and still look amazing?!

LadyMacduff · 02/03/2022 19:45

I love a long chunky cardigan over a long dress and DMs. Dark academia apparently. I'm an English teacher so I reckon i'm allowed.
