Why is Sue Grey wearing two scarves? Is this a thing now?

Exhibits A and B- It is an...umm...interesting look.

I am in peri menopause and feel like a latent volcano. I don't even want to wear one scarf! But the two-scarf thing? Is it a fashion memo that has passed me by? Or just the stylings of an eccentric woman?

I think she’s just cold..

Reallybadidea · 27/01/2022 10:38

Maybe one is a decorative 'piece' and the other she put on for going outside because it was cold?

JaninaDuszejko · 27/01/2022 10:39

She needs some cozy tights.

PossiblyDreaming · 27/01/2022 10:39

She’s probably cold. Although I’d have probably gone for thick tights/ trousers rather than bare legs and double scarves. Maybe it was colder than she was expecting and she had an extra scarf at her office so decided to stick that on too. It’s obviously a practical thing rather than fashion and almost certainly something you wouldn’t have commented on if it was a male.

Amrapaali · 27/01/2022 10:40

Never occurred to me to layer scarves but I like it Smile

Wrong @PossiblyDreaming I definitely would have commented even it was a male.

Two scarves is a novel look on a man or a woman

I get several of my scarves out of storage every year and they sit in my drawer for 4 months until they get put away again.
Awkward things, always too hot as soon as you walk inside anywhere.
Stylish though. I notice many Italians will wear huge ones in chilly Milan, but won't dream of donning a bobble cap 😁

multicolouredmittens · 27/01/2022 10:41

Hmm. I would absolutely notice and think it was just as unusual if a man wore two scarves at once.

multicolouredmittens · 27/01/2022 10:43

Actually I have loads of scarves I never get round to wearing, having been given many as gifts, so maybe this is a good solution!

This reminds me of when everyone commented on Dominic Cummings's gilets.

Amrapaali · 27/01/2022 10:44

@Justleaveitblankthen I used to wear scarves a lot. Mainly to hide ginormous norks. But then I found bra intervention threads on MN and sorted out the right bra.

I should dig out out my box of scarves and start layering. I have some pretty ones. I like the two tonal scarves in the first pic of S Grey

She’s a civil servant, not a politician, not a public figure. She’s been shoved into the limelight with a rubbish task by her selfish boss and now she’s famous.

Could we perhaps not mock her clothing choices on a website set up to support women?

Just a thought.

Amrapaali · 27/01/2022 10:46

@Thirtytimesround um who is mocking? Confused

Did you even read the thread? I called her eccentric. And to be fair, I aspire to be interesting enough to be called eccentric.

I had a two colour single scarf marketed to me yesterday.

But it's effing freezing, I could put on two scarves to go out and still be cold around my neck!

sweetbellyhigh · 27/01/2022 10:48

How to reduce a high flyer to an object of mockery. 🙄

H1Drangea · 27/01/2022 10:49

I love a scarf !
She looks nice layered up like that ( though tights would be on my legs brrr )
I often wear an indoor scarf , if I’ve got a plain top on and need another one on top to go out

Hoolihan · 27/01/2022 10:50

I'd say maybe one is part of her outfit ie to be worn all day, and the other is outerwear which she will remove along with her coat when she gets to wherever she's going. Or she could just be fucking freezing!

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 27/01/2022 10:50

I often 'double scarf' as my DCs call it. No sense in being cold :)

Amrapaali · 27/01/2022 10:52

It is often my extremities that are cold. And yes I have "double-socked" a fluffy pair over thin ones. But the scarf thing is definitely new and looks cool

Amrapaali · 27/01/2022 10:54

@H1Drangea why does indoor scarf ring a bell? Was it popular on MN a few years ago?

OP posts:
endofthelinefinally · 27/01/2022 10:59

I am old and like to wear an indoor scarf for 6 months of the year. I often add an outdoor scarf on top. I don't think that is unusual.

sometimespeopletakethepiss · 27/01/2022 11:00

What are we always so focused on what women are wearing Hmm

HangingOutTheOldLoveLetters · 27/01/2022 11:02

I like her coat / coatigan.
I wear an indoor snood outdoor wrap scarf on a cold day!

Floisme · 27/01/2022 11:02

She's age 60+ so I would imagine way past the peri menopausal volcano stage.

I don't know where the 'eccentric' label comes from. I gather she used to run a bar in Northern Ireland and takes no shit. I am looking forward immensely to her report.

Read the title Style and Beauty. If it doesn't interest you then move along.
HangingOutTheOldLoveLetters · 27/01/2022 11:04

I noticed Dominic Cummings outfits ( in a bad way)
And did you see Boris Johnsons wedding tie..looked identical to one he wore in a picture with Jennifer Arcuri.
So yes I pay attention to men's clothes.
