Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.

OP posts:

As someone who is a shortarse and has been between a 10 and a 14 since being a teenager, I very rarely see anyone who looks like me in the media or advertising. I remember reading teenage magazines and thinking all the models were so skinny and perfect. And weirdly, I remember when Hearsay (lol) came on the scene and thinking that it was quite refreshing that the girls were a 'normal' size. Obviously they all lost weight quite soon after.

And young girls still rarely have 'regular' body models - it's either ridiculously photoshopped or surgically altered bodies, or extremely overweight women. Neither are healthy, let's face it.

Snag do actually have a few women who are maybe a 12/14/16, but they are few and far between it seems.

SouthernFashionista · 14/01/2022 18:39

We are talking about extremes here. If the average size is 16 or whatever then fine, but these women are the very far end of the obesity spectrum. It makes for unpleasant viewing frankly.

EishetChayil · 14/01/2022 18:44

Snag = drag queens & obese art teachers.

This. Some of these women are NOT healthy. Some look morbidly obese. I love a plus sized model, but this is not plus sized. This is deliberately marketing at the clinically obese.

Theyve stopped being a brand for everyone to me now.

Handsnotwands · 14/01/2022 18:48

The second is a bit readers wives but the first is just someone in a bikini on a beach

CherryFlavourOwl · 14/01/2022 18:51

They seem too focussed on pleasing the menz/trans/ non binary community to me. Oh and drag. Clearly like their drag artists

The brand doesn't speak to me as a size 12/14 woman. I always thought it as for plus size women anyway

They just scream 'fetish site' to me and I think it's deliberate. I think all women of all shapes and sizes should be shown in the tights but this is all a step too far. Unless you like looking at blokes in dresses, fishnets and bunny ears

EishetChayil · 14/01/2022 18:56

Body acceptance is just another phase. What is constant is the exploitation of female bodies to sell a product.

HoldMeCloseImTryingToDanceHere · 14/01/2022 18:58

I stopped following them on fb, sick of this style of post.
You can’t even really see the tights!
Followed by comments from women that they “wish I looked like this in tights” “ Serious leg envy”
Hmm
Give over.

I agree with you.

EishetChayil · 14/01/2022 19:00

That was the last straw for me too.

@DickMabutt73962 You seem to have a chip on your shoulder. Chill out. Snag have a huge marketing budget. They don't need you white-knighting for them.

TameDucksAtChatsworth · 14/01/2022 19:02

I hadn't seen that @HoldMeCloseImTryingToDanceHere but it just about puts the tin hat on it for me.

I hope they go sodding bust.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 14/01/2022 19:07

I love the tights, I hate the advertising.

Especially when you go into the comments on Facebook and they're all "you go girl" even if it's a man advertising. The advertising seems to be, rather than being inclusive, it's almost like they're taking advantage of the models, to put out a constant stream of soft porn. I don't know how to describe it properly. They're not advertising tights they're advertising a certain type of person. If that makes sense.

AnnaBegins · 14/01/2022 19:20

It's not just the mailing list, I get their targeted ads on fb and it's got to the point where I can't scroll through fb at work as it looks like soft porn! So embarrassing and I don't even follow them! I've clearly clicked on a link at some point probably following a recommendation on here, and now they follow me everywhere. The tights look great but the marketing is just off putting.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/01/2022 19:21

@SirChenjins

I have never seen M&S using the kind of poses that were appearing on my SM - nor have I ever seen them using blokes to advertise their underwear.
There was definitely somebody who I assume was a TW about 3 months ago on the 'Sexy Lingerie' tab - not the main page, but they were definitely there.

Snag also have wheelchair users and people with walking sticks in their images.

Thing is, for a lot of buyers, the aspirational element of the photographs is that the clothes/tights actually do fit and the models haven't been airbrushed to have flat stomachs or are actually about a size 2 stretched out on Photoshop to be 'plus size'. Or, as is almost standard on the packets of tights, to have a bloke as the legs model because women's legs aren't long enough for the desired image.

JanisMoplin · 14/01/2022 19:26

Like other posters said, I didn't buy their tights for ages because I assumed they were plus size. I bought a couple because they were recommended on here, but otherwise I would have been put off by the creepy advertising.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 14/01/2022 19:27

The real reason MN loves to hate on snag is because they've used a man in some of their marketing. There's a whole other thread on this

No, the other thread was also complaining about the sexualisation of the images, male and female.

I grew up in the era of Adam Ant, Boy George and Marilyn. Like fuck am I phased by a bloke wearing tights. But I'm sick to bloody death of pornified marketing of products primarily aimed at women.

SirChenjins · 14/01/2022 19:29

You assume? No need to assume re the men used to advertise Snag products.

I really don't get why some women are so desperate for approval from men in tights.

I'm referring to Marks and Spencers.
SirChenjins · 14/01/2022 19:38

I know you were.

SirChenjins · 14/01/2022 19:40

Apologies, I may have misunderstood - did you mean you assume there was a TW on M&S?

Omicrone · 14/01/2022 19:48

Hmm, I would say this is a lil porny.

Also, are the leather kecks Snag as well or just the tights?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/01/2022 19:51

@SirChenjins

Apologies, I may have misunderstood - did you mean you assume there was a TW on M&S?
I believe the answer that would cause least offence is that I am fairly certain that they weren't assigned female at birth.
Teaforme123 · 14/01/2022 19:55

I completely agree
I love snag tights and recommend them to everyone, but I hate the way they market their stock. Just today's FB post made me cringe, I don't want to see it, it's vile and I would think the same if it was a size 2 model. I'm a big 16 and don't particularly want to see plus size models flaunting their cellulite. Being ok with your size is one thing but promoting unhealthy body size is another.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/01/2022 19:56

@foxgoosefinch

It’s not the bum, it’s the porn aesthetic.
This.
