Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.

Of course Snag is going to appeal to drag queens, TW, NB, men and everyone else because they are FOR everyone.

You buy them based on your height and waist size which makes them differ from the high street. I imagine many drag queens would find it difficult to fit into primark tights since they are designed for long legged women.

Since they've created a brand that is designed to fit on any pair of legs, why not showcase the full range of legs out there? Big, small, tall, short, young, old, male, female, able bodied, disabled bodied etc.

The PROBLEM is that they aren't focussing equally on all areas. They are focussing heavily on larger women (on the website, I've missed a lot of their SM marketing tbh) AND in some pictures you can hardly see the product they are trying to sell!

I can definitely see a marketing angle to show real people in real situations wearing their tights on SM campaigns, but on the website ideally most people would just like to see the tights (NOT covered up by boots or long dress, or hidden below the bottom of the frame or behind a bunch of props). Literally just show us a whole bunch of different shaped legs wearing the tights.

I believe the answer that would cause least offence is that I am fairly certain that they weren't assigned female at birth

I thought that’s what you meant. My point was there’s absolutely no doubt that the men used by Snag weren’t assigned female at birth and are still very much not female. Quite why Snag believe grown women need men to advertise tights is a mystery to me. Perhaps they feel were not capable of choosing them ourselves and need guidance from blokes.

Justkeeppedaling · 14/01/2022 20:08

I assumed they are trying to sell them to blokes. As in Bloke blokes.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 14/01/2022 20:10

@Omicrone

Hmm, I would say this is a lil porny.

Also, are the leather kecks Snag as well or just the tights?

That's from a photo shoot, as in the person in the photo had it done, happened to wear snag tights and tagged them in it. So snag shared the image Like if I was wearing a dress and tights for a shoot and tagged M&S and snag and they shared it The bottoms and top are brand x (I know as I have them!)
Mousetruffle · 14/01/2022 20:10

@GrumpyTerrier

I've just scrolled through their instagram and I saw a range of sizes, very slim, average, large. What am I missing?
I'm thinking the same. I'm not on Instagram, but their website clearly has a range of different sized women in their tights. None looking like porn either. The women wearing their pants are fat, but so what.

The whole complaining about not seeing enough normal sized people is ridiculous. It's like men complaining about enternational women's day. Every single clothes advert and website has a normal sized woman wearing the clothes. Even "plus sized models" are only about a size 14. Regular sized people have the entire clothing industry and Internet. Let plus sized people have snag.

Justkeeppedaling · 14/01/2022 20:16

There are lots of fat old people, you'll be fine

Unlikely, if I stay overweight.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/01/2022 20:18

But they don't. The majority of websites still use tall thin models to show off clothes. Even the plus sizes are taller than average or slim but wear padding to be 'fat' in the right places.

What people want to see is diversity. We want to see small models with dumpy legs who are a size 12. We want to see models with large boobs and bums who are a size 10. We want to see models who are 5'4 and size 14 with a mum tum but would be a size 12 without said tum. Models sized 16 with a flat arse. And everything in between.

'Regular' people hardly feature in any marketing. It has to be extremes.

Violinist64 · 14/01/2022 20:19

I have a problem called lipodoema, which means my bottom and legs are out of complete proportion to the upper half of my body. Getting a decent pair of tights to fit was a nightmare until I found Snag. Their size D fits me perfectly. I received the pants email today. I didn’t think it was pornographic but, in common with others here, I have thought for some time that the models have been skewed towards the very large. I certainly did not want, or expect, to see a morbidly obese model in a thong. There was nothing attractive about it whatsoever and I am sure it must be very uncomfortable - l have certainly never wanted to wear one. I am sure I am going to be slated for this view but I am also sure l am not the only one to have these thoughts. In their efforts to be inclusive with their models, Snag have missed the biggest market of all - the woman who is middle-aged, medium size and average weight.

Violinist64 · 14/01/2022 20:19

Average height.

A580Hojas · 14/01/2022 20:23

@JanisMoplin

Like other posters said, I didn't buy their tights for ages because I assumed they were plus size. I bought a couple because they were recommended on here, but otherwise I would have been put off by the creepy advertising.
I won't go near them for the same reason.
Glowtastic · 14/01/2022 20:25

A lot of of the models are morbidly obese. They have an illness. In the 90s there was a lot of criticism for the heroin chic aesthetic. Cashing in on an illness/eating disorder is unethical regardless of which end of the spectrum it is. And it feels quite exploitative.

Zara models are unhealthily thin and I'm reluctant to spend cash there for just this reason. It goes both ways.

So agree, we wear tights!! And we're earning the cash to buy the tights!

The point I've been making since the start of this thread, but so many aren't listening sliceofcake
Puffalicious · 14/01/2022 20:37

I don't mean you, Sliceofcake! I'm agreeing with you! Too many others on here are running with the fat-shaming angle, which is not the case!

Puffalicious · 14/01/2022 20:38

And, yes, I exactly the 5'5 14 who would be a 12 without the mum tum! Average in every way and I'm never represented.

bcc89 · 14/01/2022 20:46

To all those saying to let the plus size have snag: a lot of it isn't plus size. A lot is morbid obesity. Those ladies are unwell!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 14/01/2022 20:50

Molke is another brand that features lots of plus sized models but they do also use many smaller sized ones, as well as models with various disabilities. I find that more inclusive.

Omicrone · 14/01/2022 20:54

I follow a 'body positive' instagrammer who has put on quite a lot of weight in the last couple of years. It is clear that despite wearing clothes that are way too small for her, and claiming she feels fabulous in them, that she wants to lose weight. She has said she wants to lose weight. But she clearly feels bad about this, as if she is 'letting the side down', and keeps making qualifying statements about her desire to lose weight, as if wanting to do that is some terrible thing. I guess she feels like she might lose some of her followers as they will feel 'betrayed' as well.

The whole 'body positive' movement seems to be becoming quite toxic now tbh.

Look at the slating Adele got for losing weight. And being happy about it! The body positive movement has become quite punitive. The whole real men prefer "real women" is grim too. Slim shaming is a thing.
StrandedStarfish · 14/01/2022 21:12

I got the email this morning. I looked at the knickers, saw that they had a proper thick elastic waistband and thought, that will solve the problem of tiny elastic waistband knockers rolling down and ordered some. I was looking at the clothes rather than the model poses.

I also think it’s brilliant that women are comfortable enough to submit their images to the site. Good luck to them.

I also ordered some, but thanks to this thread!

I’m not mad keen on some of their advertising choices, but I did appreciate how the women modelling the knickers were wearing hoodies and t shirts instead of tiny bras!

onedayoranother · 14/01/2022 21:37

As long as the models are actually showing the product then I think it's good to show a range. Just had a look at the thong range (though they look so uncomfortable) and there seems to be a range of models from about size 16 up to 30.
Women want to see how they might look like in a piece of clothing. As the website seems geared towards larger sizes (whether this is new or not) this just makes sense.

But they aren't aiming the product at size 16 and upwards. It isn't a plus size brand.
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 14/01/2022 21:54

It would be great if they had for every product a model in every size. I know some of them they do but if they showed
Wearing size A/B/C so you could literally flip to your size and see. I think that's helpful as well because say the model is a size smaller or bigger but a similar shape then it's easier to visualise? I'm a 16 and I can't visualise myself in the knickers even though I'm closer to the models than I am a size 6 model!

A580Hojas · 14/01/2022 21:55

With their knickers they must be aiming for quite a limited market as all the models I've seen must be size 22+. I don't think the images will really appeal to anyone smaller than that.
