Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.

BTW. I don't hate myself. I'm not that over weight, but a couple of stone heavier than I shield be. I've decided I want to live to see my grand children and to play an active part in their lives.

Thanks SirChenjins ❤️

My health is my own business and you know nothing about me or any other fat person. I don't think the general fatphobia on Mumsnet has anything to do with worry about people's health is just disgust at fat bodies. Selling knickers to fat people and showing fat bodies is not glorifying them it's just acknowledging they exist. I'm sick of the pretence that everyone is so worried about everyone else's health, it's just bollocks.

SirChenjins · 14/01/2022 16:51

@Butteryflakycrust83

Ah here we go, didn't take long for all the medical professionals to come out.
But it's true - being obese brings about all sorts of health issues (and ye, so does smoking, drinking to excess, and so on...) and telling someone they must hate themselves and to fuck off because they've pointed that out is bang out of order.
Frlrlrubert · 14/01/2022 16:59

I'm a 12-14 and 5'6 and I love snag tights, they are the comfiest and they stay up the best. I love the bright colours too. I could buy tights anywhere, but I really do rate snag. I do feel like I'm not their target market going from their advertising though.

It's a bit weird because when I recommend them to people (of all sizes) I feel like I have to say 'I swear by snag tights, their advertising is a bit... um... fetishy, but the tights are really good'. It's actually got to the point where if a young person (I teach 14-19) asked me where I got my awesome patterned tights I'd be wary of telling them.

I feel like they're probably missing customers who would want comfy colourful tights that stay up because people see the mock-garter / soft porn / very large women aspect and think the products aren't for them, or because you don't want to direct your vague acquaintance or your manager to their website!

Butteryflakycrust83 · 14/01/2022 17:00

No it doesn't. Correlation and causation.

How talking about tights quickly spins into 'Fat cows, you are doing to die!' is just so predictable and boring.

You know nothing about someones health, fat or thin.

Oh, but it does I'm afraid.

And what's equally as predictable is the hyperbole as shown in your 'fat cows' claim, which of course no-one has actually made. Otoh, someone who has said she doesn't want to be fat and doesn't buy into the whole bopo movement is told that she obviously hates herself and should fuck off.

I was looking at the period swimwear on the Modibodi website earlier and really liked that each product is available to view on different sized/shaped bodies, from 8/XS to 18/2XL. Admittedly they don't seem to have any photos of models in the largest sizes they do (up to 26/6XL), but it seemed at least like a move in the right direction.

Fraternaltwin · 14/01/2022 17:11

I’m more offended by the men dressing as women than I am of the cellulite, but I totally get what you mean. I think they just like to shock.

I agree, it's great to be able to see their products on a range of models. I also like Cheeky Wipes for showing older women in their underwear, something which again seems to elude Snag.
weebarra · 14/01/2022 17:16

@IsolaPribby - I've just checked my past orders and I always get a size E. I'm 4 10 and an 18 and they fit really well.
@Hoppinggreen - I suppose I mean average! As you can see from what I've just written, that's not me. Someone 5 4 who is a size 12?

ohidoliketobe · 14/01/2022 17:16

"Can someone find me some examples of this "porn aesthetic"?"

Upskirt angle shot of someone dressed like a schoolgirl in a classroom setting porny enough for you?

A friend of mine died from complications brought about by being morbidly obese. His difficulties were complex but he was very lonely and very troubled and he basically ate himself to death at the age of 49. It was very sad but he was completely and totally in denial about the gravity of his problems and massively avoided any attempt by others to help him.
I dislike snags advertising, it's not "inclusive", it's irresponsible. There's nothing nothing positive about being breathless, at risk of diabetes, skin ulcers, heart failure, breathlessness and multiple other health problems.

Obesity ruins people's lives. Let's not glorify it. I think sweaty Betty is far more inclusive, a range of body shapes and sizes without the fetishy feel of snag.

Bluebluemoon39 · 14/01/2022 17:21

Is it NOT a plus size website then? I just had a quick look and it wouldn't appeal to me as I feel I don't fit the demographic (I'm a size 10)

It's a shame about the more "porno" looking photos as some of them just look really joyful and lovely. There's really no need for the ones like someone has posted above (up the skirt shot) it just seems a bit cheap and seedy.

Sorry for your loss, but thats an eating disorder.

How this spun into health, I dont know. Fat women are allowed to exist and be happy and wear tights. END OF.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 14/01/2022 17:23

Might be nice if they show a bigger age range as well as sizes? Would be good to see models in their 50s+ wearing these since they are after diversity.

It's great that they are showing their products on a variety of body shapes, but if they mainly show products on larger women and few pictures of women sized 16 and below it does create the impression that the brand is for larger women and therefore you would be forgiven for thinking that the product doesn't scale down very well (like with other shops).

Here's the thing though, you absolutely would benefit from the product. If you're after tights (or knickers apparently, hadn't realised they did these) then you buy based on your height and waist size. Compared to buying tights in supermarkets or on the high street where you buy small, medium or large and the length doesn't really vary.

I'm a 12 and love these as I'm short so getting some that fit me comfortably is difficult elsewhere.

At a glance I didn't see any range on the Sweaty Better website than showed diversity. Admittedly I didn't spend long on there looking but it appeared very standard in terms of models etc.

PatchworkElmer · 14/01/2022 17:30

I unfollowed them too, the marketing made me feel a bit uncomfortable- as others have said, it’s almost a bit porn-like.

I do think there’s value in having models of all shapes and sizes though. It’s the posing that needs to be sorted IMO 🤷🏻‍♀️

Frlrlrubert · 14/01/2022 17:30

If you ever get sick of pulling your tights up, or you want some colours, they are great, for all sizes. I feel like that used to be the message. But I really don't think that's what comes across now.

MarshaBradyo · 14/01/2022 17:30

Just looked at site

Are the pics from people who send them in?

They do seem quite full on in tone etc

LondonQueen · 14/01/2022 17:33

Jesus they are awful.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 14/01/2022 17:33

Sweaty Betty are not size inclusive, they only go to size 18-20.

Glowtastic · 14/01/2022 17:36

Sorry not sweaty Betty, may have been Nike or Adidas
