Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.

@Butteryflakycrust83

If your offended by seeing a big fat bum, you need to reassess your life, honestly.

I am sure they will not miss your business - they are by far the most successful plus size tights company.

So they are a plus size brand then??
SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 17/01/2022 19:35

So they are a plus size brand then??

Not if you ask them directly they'll tell you that they are an all-inclusive brand

The presence of size 2-4 and models wearing that size demonstrates that they aren't a 'plus size brand'.
StarShapedWindow · 17/01/2022 19:42

Maybe their models are morbidly obese or hairy men because we start threads about them and spread the word? Quite good marketing if it gets everyone talking about them.

Puffalicious · 17/01/2022 20:16
@Branleuse I’m fat, and it’s not the models’ bodies or their size I don’t like; it’s the porny fetish vibe with the upskirt crotch shots, leather, men’s bum cracks, cross-dressed men wearing fishnets, shots up the bum crack (women too), OnlyFans style posing on beds stuff that doesn’t appeal to me.

I don’t know how you look at some of the images posted on the thread and don’t see the porn vibe? Do fatter women really want to look like a cheap readers’ wives shot? I know I don’t. I’d rather see nice underwear modelled with the tights as if larger women (shock!) can be elegant and well dressed, and not just represented as a porny bum in red mesh fake-suspenders. Some of those photos make Ann Summers look like Rigby & Peller in comparison!
This! I need to be careful when scrolling if DS9 is around. It's ridiculous. As a PP said, I teach and if a teenager asked where I got my funky tights I'd be loathe to recommend the website!

Frlrlrubert · 17/01/2022 20:20

@Puffalicious

I can totally see a situation when a pupil asks where I got my tights and it ends up with a parent phoning up to complain I was directing their child to dodgy websites! But at the same time 'I can't tell you' sounds shady too!

Puffalicious · 17/01/2022 20:20

@pootlingalonginthesun

I don't understand why they don't use a range of models. I'm a size 10 / small 12. I'm not skinny. I'm quite short, have a wobbly bum with lots of cellulite, and have a belly with a c section overhang. So no I'm not obese or even officially overweight. But my body isn't represented on their website. Nor is my body represented on standard fashion brand websites either. I like to think there are more women out there around my size than the size of the plus size models than they use, because the majority of women aren't obese. So why not represent me too?
I've said this a few times on this thread. Like PP I'm 50 and just not included in their marketing for size 12-14 tights that are comfortable, stay up and smart for work. I love their tights because I can't get Primark/ M&S etc to stay up/ not cut me in half! They are NOT a plus size brand and I'm sick of the soft porn marketing.

Absolutely! The 'I can't tell you' is really bad! I'd end up having to lie and say 'a friend bought me them '.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 17/01/2022 20:27

Snag tights stay up and wash well. Great tights, good value.

I think we can safely conclude that a lot of snag custom is from larger women. When snag release limited editions, the large sizes always sell out very quickly. Their advertising features more plus sized models than other brands.

The company is trying to expand their brand by selling underwear and mock garter tights. They're sensibly aiming at their key market, so we are seeing adverts of larger women wearing the items.

No has one batted an eyelid at the M&S advert with bondage style bra, suspenders and thong (worn by a thin woman)

I think what you object to most is the idea that fat women should dare to imagine they can look good in thin people thongs and thin people poses.

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 20:34

Err, several people on the thread did say they thought the M&S pic was OTT too! And none of the M&S pics are literally shot like an upskirt shot of a cheap schoolgirl porn movie, neither do they sell leather fetish bras as far as I’m aware, or put pics up of men’s bum cracks through fishnets, or shots where the model’s bare bum is the main feature and it’s shot upwards into her arse?

Yup! Same with ASOS referenced uptrend.

Snag don't sell leather bras. It's a photo shoot that someone did, wearing brand x and snag, and then tagged snag Snag then shared the image

(I know because I own that PVC lingerie set and went to view the persons profile after snag shared it!)

Branleuse · 17/01/2022 21:03

i think its just very noticeable that people dont tend to complain that much about sexualised underwear and tights modelling anyway unless its a fat woman doing it.
They are not the only place to buy tights

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 21:06

That’s the entire point though, that’s their marketing! They share images on their feeds that fit with their own brand image. Lots of their own shoots fit with that image too.

The point is that lots of us don’t like the porny brand image. You might love them if you like a fake leather or PVC underwear set. But there’s no way anyone could call a PVC underwear set elegant or mainstream or anything other than influenced by a fetish look. Sorry, but it’s true!

Not true, I complained about the porny aesthetic of American Apparel, I complained about the porny Blurred Lines, I complain about the porny look of music videos, I complained about people styling porn aesthetic as heroic chic in the 90s whether it was Kate Moss shoots or Pulp’s This Is Hardcore, I’ve been a bona fide Not The Fun Kind of Feminist for a long time and it doesn’t matter how fat or thin the porn aesthetic is, I still think it’s grim and exploitative. Grin
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 21:10

Is it "porny" though if it's on a size 6 or is that ok?
I think that's the main issue with what people are saying is they don't want to see "fat women"
Snag will share a lot of stuff, I'm a size 16 and they've shared one of me before from a photo shoot, I was just wearing their black tights and a dress so nothing unusual. If smaller size women aren't tagging them, they can't share it I guess so it's like a vicious circle. Unless they start doing their own shoots with a range of sizes 🤷🏽‍♀️
I looked at their tagged photos and there isn't many clear, good, photo shoot standard images of smaller women

Yep, still porny whether it’s emaciated women, or average sized women, or larger women. The fetish porn look isn’t any less exploitative, sexist and objectifying just because it’s on a size 20 model.
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 21:18

Yeah that's an agree to disagree! I wear PVC, latex, leather, anything like that but it's mostly stuff I'm asked to wear for shoots, or stuff I class as bedroom wear rather than anything else so I don't see it as objectifying myself, I just like the look of it which is why I have a lot of brand X stuff. It's my equivalent of wearing pretty lingerie for a date night

I might order a pair of the knickers and see what they're like and then I can review them properly as I do like the tights

Branleuse · 17/01/2022 21:21

there is nothing outrageously porny though. Nothing. You go on the snag website and of course theres fat women and women in wheelchairs etc, and the fact you can see their underwear is because theyre selling the underwear. They are showing it to be playful.
snagtights.com/

I hope they continue to do well as a brand. You cant please everyone,

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 21:23

I've actually just gone to order and my size is sold out, but the thong and cheeky both have images now of a range of sizes when I scrolled through

Puffalicious · 17/01/2022 21:37

I'm posting this again. Just come up when I was reading a newspaper online. I don't want to see it whether size 12 or 20!

Puffalicious · 17/01/2022 21:39

But there’s no way anyone could call a PVC underwear set elegant or mainstream or anything other than influenced by a fetish look. Sorry, but it’s true!

Absolutely agree. You might like it/ wear it for a shoot, but there's no denying that it's fetishy, not mainstream, and there for the eyes of men, mainly.

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 21:43

Some of the images posted up thread are actually from their own online shop and product images though, not just their media feeds.

Yeah, we’ll have to disagree about PVC and latex underwear! I can’t imagine any context in which that isn’t part of a kink/fetish look. Can you really? It’s not like you’d wear it to be comfortable, is it? Sounds pretty disingenuous to say that isn’t porny, tbh.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 17/01/2022 21:47

@foxgoosefinch like this, this is latex. I just wore it because I liked it (and it was one of the outfits I had to choose from!)
I can't show the rest of it but it's just a normal sleeveless dress cut so I wouldn't say porny
Maybe fetish or kink but then anything can be a kink from ankle socks to I dunno, whipped cream

My friend wears a lot of PVC/leather but that's her aesthetic, sort of goth/DM/heavily tattooed look

foxgoosefinch · 17/01/2022 21:55

Looks pretty fetish/kink to me? Fine if you like that look! There’s no arse crack on show there. But lots of us on the thread aren’t liking the arse cracks and upskirt marketing shots, which is a shame because maybe we might otherwise be their market, but then if they’ve decided we aren’t, that’s OK too. They don’t want my money! I’ll just carry on shopping at M&S and Wolford like all the other pearl-clutching types who don’t want to see up someone’s vulva in an email! Grin
