Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.
@sliceofcake What's porny about it? It's a woman sitting in her underwear. How is it different to, say, these photos on the MS website? www.marksandspencer.com/calvi-embroidery-underwired-plunge-bra-set-a-e/p/ds8c8d413e1775e9b1e8543e289a4d61d2
For M&S, that’s actually quite ‘porny’ too.

LovedayCL · 16/01/2022 03:57

It’s stuff like this, it tells me this brand is definitely not for me. I don’t want to see it. It’s the extremes too.

StarlightLady · 16/01/2022 05:21

@sliceofcake

Looking at the M&S comparison, this is so dferent, some of us opt to wear and prefer stockings/suspenders as did my mum. And we wear them discreetly, it is not because we are out on the pull!

There has been a sleaze highjack, but that is not the fault of most of us.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 16/01/2022 12:20

@SquidMonkey

Don't need to see cellulite? Why on Earth not?!

Was this a joke? Why would anybody want to see that? It's unhealthy and not pleasant to look at, hence people trying to avoid getting it.

But surely the majority of normal every day women on the street have cellulite? So showing models who don't have it, isn't representing the people buying the product Cellulite isn't unhealthy, it can be genetic, depend on how thin your skin is. Rihanna, Hilary duff, Britney.. all have cellulite

I can't unsee this!
GreenEyeOfTheLittleYellowGod · 16/01/2022 16:47

I love Snag Tights but I have to admit their advertising does make me cringe. Most of it is awful and fetishy/porny. And those fake suspenders are so hideous you have to wonder what they're thinking 😬 but each to their own.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 16:48

Thought I was the only one who hates their adverts. As a PP said, some of the photos are really stomach churning. It completely puts me off buying from them.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 16:49

A very thin model would be frowned on. So why is being so morbidly obese seen as positive.

apinions · 16/01/2022 18:03

I clicked on this thread as by coincidence I bought some snag tights for the first time last week. I bought the mock garter/suspender tights as I'm a 50yr old menopausal woman who finds normal tights just too hot and sweaty, and snag are the only retailer where I've seen these type of tights. Hated the photos though.

MazzleDazzle · 16/01/2022 18:46

@LovedayCL because the model’s head is upside down, at a glance I thought it was a woman!

Oh so did I. I don't think this is a brand for me.

Because fat isn't aspirational in society. Those are just fat women existing and wearing clothes.
ExConstance · 17/01/2022 11:09

I wondered if it was just me that felt that way about the pictures. Whilst yes, there is some admiration for people feeling OK about having whatever body they have at the moment I feel deeply sad that young women should not be thinking about the health implications of being very overweight, or that the message might be that this is totally OK. I'm not sure how you get across a message that says it is OK for today, but think about it going forward. I'm a normal weigh now but having lost 4 stone last year my birthday suit is a little wrinkly in places. I'm proud of what I've done but you wouldn't catch me modelling lingerie! Off to House of Bruar to shop, they have nice thickish tights in loads of colours, the models just show one leg by way of illustration.

How do you know what they think?

Its so funny that a fat woman being confident in her choice of clothes = doesn't care about her health.

You absolutely do not extend these thoughts any further than seeing someone fat and happy. You cant help yourselves.

ExConstance · 17/01/2022 12:08

We should all be thinking about our health, full stop. The health service cannot accommodate all needs at the moment and an increase in diabetes, hip and knee surgery etc. in the years to come is just another burden. Being very underweight is unhealthy and being very overweight is unhealthy. Only this morning some research about waist size was publicised, indicating that abdominal fat increased risk of hospitalisation by 25%. When the trend was for "heroin chic" sized models there was a huge outcry. I don't really see why this should be different when the models are very over a healthy weight.

TheSnootiestFox · 17/01/2022 12:21

Right, I've not rtft so apologies if this has already been stated, but the vast majority of the models you are slating for being obese aren't. They have a disease called lipoedema. Snag tights are very well known in the lipoedema community, and I think the lady that started the company actually has it too. Sufferers of the condition have disproportionately large arms, legs, bum, hips and thighs and that lovely dimpled texture that you all think is cellulite. I have stage 3 lipoedema, a 32 inch waist, 36c boobs and knees that are 24ins in circumference each, if that gives you any idea.

I think the poses can be OTT, but I would reiterate that to us, there is nothing abnormal about the models used, that is what we look like. And rather than banging in about us being a burden to the NHS, we tend to be fastidious about diet and exercise and its the NHS that won't give us the treatment we need, hence I've just sold my house to pay for it. Lipoedema fat is resistant to diet and exercise so the only way to remove it is liposuction. My mum now can't walk as her legs are too big to lift, and I can tell you countless stories about women who are now disabled but are judged by society as just being obese.

You are all welcome to buy whatever tights you wish, but at least educate yourself about womens health and leave the judging alone.

Puffalicious · 17/01/2022 13:02

Thesnootiestfox I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, but you surely can't know that most of the models have this? On top of this, it's not the size of the models I'm worried about, it's the sexualisation, the kink, the poor examples being shown of the representation of women. That and the fact that there's not a variety of sizes: I'm not represented anywhere as I keep saying, a 50 year old size 12-14 mammy with a mum tum!

Yep get that completely! But I always thought it was a brand for lippy women. And yes I can know that a lot of the models have it, I've spent 40 years getting a diagnosis for myself so I'm pretty hot on the diagnostic criteria. Fat women don't have the knee pads we do or the mattress texture on the skin. You can spot it a mile off when you know what you're looking for!
ExConstance · 17/01/2022 13:22

I think if Snag cater for people with lipoedema it would be a good idea for them to say so on their website. There are some characteristics about the fat deposits that would make it very difficult to get tights to fit, such as the cuff effect which ends at the ankle and they would be providing a much needed service if their tights will fit people who have the condition.

I contacted them re: similar when they released their swimwear range (definitely not anything I’d swim in).

That's an interesting view. Another woman with this condition has already posted about it and explained why she buys their tights, but she has a different take on their marketing and the models they use. I don't think the 'vast majority' of them have this condition.
SpookyScarySkeletons · 17/01/2022 13:34

I got flamed for this the last time there was a post on it. But I'm sticking my head above the parapet again.

I feel that their marketing and models are irresponsible and dangerous. They are glamourising dangerous levels of obesity and giving the message that's it's normal to be that size. It's not and it's incredible unhealthy.

And I say this as someone was 3 years ago was a size 24-26 and now diabetic with other health problems due to my weight. I see the model images and am genuinely worried for their long term health.

Yes show all shapes and sizes of models but it feels to me that they majorly focus on the very large models.

Please explain how it is glamourising?
cultkid · 17/01/2022 13:42

Just looked at their Instagram

It comes across as a brand for plus size only

It's not that inclusive of the other smaller body types

It seems a bit woke. I'll probably get flamed for this. I'm tired of brands swinging so far the other way they become totally impossible to relate to

SpookyScarySkeletons · 17/01/2022 13:44

Of course it's glamourising! A lot of their advertising is very sexual images, in fact a lot of people on this thread have described them as pornographic.

There is very much a message of "look how good I look in these amazing tights/knickers/swimwear"
