Snag Tights email

Fully prepared to get slaughtered for this but here goes.

I've bought tights from Snag before (and really like them) so I'm obviously on their mailing list. I'm a shortarsed size 16-18 so very far from a supermodel.

They've emailed this morning to advertise their new knicker range with images of women wearing them in all their glory and it really wasn't what I wanted in my inbox on a Friday morning. My own wobbly cellulite covered arse is bad enough, I don't need to look at other people's.

It feels like the whole 'body positivity' thing is going too far to me, I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin but does that have to involve sharing it with the rest of the world? Leaving aside the fact it's not generally healthy to be over a certain size - and that includes me.

I came on to S&B to see if anyone had posted anything about this. I agree. Do you follow them on Instagram? I do, because I like to see when they launch new colours of tights, but I think I’ll unfollow them because some of their posts are verging on stomach-turning. I don’t really want to see anyone in just a thong or those awful ‘mock garters’.

They used to be for every size, unusually small just as much as unusually big, but lately they seem to have decided to only focus on the larger end. (Oh, and men Hmm)

TerribleCustomerCervix · 14/01/2022 13:33

Just had a look on their website.

Their new knicker range actually looks the business- I’d be tempted by them as I really like their tights.

But what do they actually look like on someone who is less than a size 16? I love that they make proper efforts to be inclusive, but there’s multiple shots of plus size models, and none that I can see of women who are high street sized?

Puffalicious · 14/01/2022 13:42

Oh God yes! I've actually just ordered more black/ navy tights.(yes I'm boring but that's what I wear!). I really like their tights as they fit. I'm a 12-14 but have no hips so am only a size C. They're the only tights that fit really well.

I cannot stand the marketing. I completely agree with both of you. The photos if thongs and mock garters are awful- they actually seem quite pornographic sometimes with the poses. I think they go out of their way to use models who are unusually large. Now, I applaud such body positivity (wish I had it!) but I do think it's excessive. There are fewer and fewer smaller models. I commented on a FB post a few months back about how I didn't ever see women that looked like me (older mammy size 14). I got totally flamed, told I had people who looked like me everywhere in other brands and that I was basically fat-shamimg. The point was lost on them that I don't see my type anywhere, it's either size 8 models or Snag models. For a company that's supposed to be for 'every body' it's so not inclusive.

I did see some average bodies used in the Xmas ad, which was good to see, but the mail you refer to was, indeed, quite extreme.

Saying all this we'll all probably get fat-shamed on here, but at least I have company.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 14/01/2022 13:43

I quite liked it ...

BusterGonad · 14/01/2022 14:13

I've just taken a look (on the website) and I get what you mean.

SouthernFashionista · 14/01/2022 14:24

Totally agree. I’ve had a look at their Instagram page and am pretty shocked. Looks like they are targeting a certain type of audience with a specific kink. Nothing appealing or aspirational about it. Those women are seriously overweight and at risk of all sorts of illness. Just as bad as having skinny models IMO.

BusterGonad · 14/01/2022 14:28

Is it an Italian brand or American? Everything about screams America to me.

British, as far as I know. I think they’re based in Scotland.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/01/2022 14:31

Unsubscribe then. Sorted .

Hoppinggreen · 14/01/2022 14:32

I am a size 16 and I am slightly annoyed at their lack of diversity when it comes to size. They have different races, genders, sexes etc but increasingly nobody under a size 18
They risk making themselves a larger persons brand only

CurbsideProphet · 14/01/2022 14:33

I don't buy from Snag anymore and have hidden them on Instagram, as the focus seems to be on men and pornographic photos from customers.

That’s exactly it. They’re aiming for a niche male audience with an interest in extremely large women.
WoodSageandSeasalt · 14/01/2022 14:38

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor thanks for that useful contribution, unsurprisingly I have already

I think the women who model the clothes are bloody brilliant and am really admiring that they are prepared to model their (perfectly ordinary to be honest) bodies in underwear. Their body shapes are as rare the average model's I would say.

That said, a row of any arses in my inbox of a morning isn't my cup of tea - I'm sick of seeing naked female bodies everywhere - but at least they're actually selling underwear not perfume or cars or whatever.

goldfluffyclouds · 14/01/2022 14:41

i have bought from them in the past, but agree with you...
used to love their ethos - and supported them
But... am now switched off - they have gone too far
as a larger lady i just don't find they resonate with me anymore...

I'm with you on that. On the one hand I'm glad they are showing what the items look like on bigger sizes (so I can tell how they'd look on my body) but generally I don't really want to see anyone else's arse, no matter what size they are.

So, glad they're doing it, but I don't subscribe to their newsletter or follow them online, I know where they are when I need new tights etc.

weebarra · 14/01/2022 14:45

I agree. I'm a loyal customer as I'm a very short fat woman but I think they're marketing themselves as only for larger women whereas their whole USP is that they work for everyone.
I have bought two pairs of knickers today - I tend to buy granny pants due to the overhang caused by three big babies and three ELCS, but that was despite rather than because of the email. I'm glad larger women are positive about themselves, I'm sure as hell not!

I thought till this thread that it was a + size brand, so I’ve never explored it further.
weebarra · 14/01/2022 14:49

@Hoppinggreen - I have lots of normal sized friends who swear by snag!

ZombeaArthur · 14/01/2022 14:49

For the longest time I really believed they were a plus sized brand. It was only the recommendations on here that convinced me to look on the website and now I have a few pairs of tights that I absolutely love. It is quite difficult to judge how something will look on me when almost all of the models are of a similar size. I’d really like to see a variety of models as, like a previous poster mentioned, I’m neither catalog model nor plus sized and it seems like such a missed opportunity.

I also agree that the current campaign seems almost pornographic.

TeaMeBasil · 14/01/2022 14:51

Agreed. I like the product and am all in favour of the diversity but some of the photos are so over the top and over sexualised that they are not pleasant to see.

foxgoosefinch · 14/01/2022 14:54

Not almost but actually pornographic I would say - I don’t really want to look at soft porn or kink porn in my inbox or on my Facebook feed, and hate that whole “aesthetic” of pretending porn is great and “empowering”. Porn is not empowering, and I don’t want to look like I’m in a webcam video or in a low budget porn film even when I want to have sex!

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 14/01/2022 14:59

Current knickers campaign aside I find it strange that their website seems to have ONLY plus size models. I am a size 12 and bought a few pairs of tights from there last year as I’d heard good things and like the patters. I have worn them a few times and they are nice enough. Their website / marketing makes it seem they are only for plus size ladies which isn’t the case. I think reviewing and honing their marketing strategy might mean they reach a wider audience.

twilightcafe · 14/01/2022 14:59

YANBU. They do have a few regular-sized models on their Instagram page.
I'm not skinny. I'm a size 18 on a good day. However, I don't want to see anyone's thong-clad bottom on my feed. So I've unsubscribed.

Lacedwithgrace · 14/01/2022 14:59

I liked their marketing and I'm a size 2. No one feels this strongly against dangerously slim models but the second they show cellulite or a fat roll everyone's disgusted?
