How many coats do you have?

I wfh and never have to look dressed up. I have a technical waterproof for (rare) hikes, a long black coat, a proper Scandinavian winter coat, a trench type thing, a mid weight puffer and in the sales I've just convinced myself I needed to get three more ( 2 mid season, one fairly warm). I don't 'need' them, they will add variety to my wardrobe but clearly are not necessary. But I love coats!! I'm sure I'd have more if I hadn't put on weight 3 years ago and had to get rid of most of mine and start again. It's becoming a bit embarrassing to explain to my OH what the newest package is, and I should probably save my money for other things.

Am I going overboard? How many coats do you have?

Erm.....lightweight Jack Wolfskein waterproof, thick Musto puffer, thinner North Face puffer, ancient denim jacket and black leather biker jacket. Those are the only ones I wear regularly, anyway. Am not really a coat person.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 31/12/2021 15:59

I have waaaaay more than you. I love coats. And boots. I’d buy all the coats if I could. DP is most disapproving as we can no longer get in the understairs cupboard because of them. He has loads though, he just leaves them at his mums and thinks I don’t know.

Iamthewombat · 31/12/2021 16:03

Loads. Always have a good coat. That was one of the best pieces of style advice I ever had. I look out for good tailored styles from Sportmax, Marella, Joseph etc in sales. Karen Millen used to do fantastic coats before they went downhill and became part of the godforsaken boohoo.

Tailored wool or cloth coats have been eclipsed by joyless waterproof dog walking things for the past couple of years but look loads better, far more stylish.

Svara · 31/12/2021 16:08

I have one lightweight puffa jacket I wear, a longer one that I might wear very occasionally if I'm out at night when it's freezing, and a basic lightweight waterproof I would take hiking, so three.

Lineofconcepcion · 31/12/2021 16:10

About 15 🤔

coronabeer · 31/12/2021 16:14

I only have one coat, a waterproof one which has to do for everything but is probably only really suitable for dog walking. I'm hoping I can find a warmer, smarter coat in the sales so with any luck I should have two before long. Haven't really seen anything I like yet.

PickAChew · 31/12/2021 16:15

3 that I regularly wear - a summer joules raincoat, a joules quilted coat and a not so warm but properly wind and rain proof but smart barbour coastal coat. When it's proper cold, I have a massive berghaus parka - past its best but still functional.

I have a Seasalt autumn weight coat that I hate that I really should donate a d a dressy Laura Ashley coat that I rarely wear as it's neither warm nor weatherproof.

I also have a large bag of wool melt which is set to become a properly warm dressy coat.

PickAChew · 31/12/2021 16:16

Wool melton

AnxiousHeffalump · 31/12/2021 16:18

One but I very rarely wear a coat.

Amelion · 31/12/2021 16:23

Loads! Maybe 15-20?

But some of them are quite specific because I do quite a lot of outdoors/sports stuff - e.g I have one proper warm insulated hiking jacket that I’ve used for multi-day hikes and have had for years. A skiing jacket. A waterproof running jacket. A lightweight hiking jacket for easy summer hiking.

Then three smart wool coats that I wear for work or in the evenings - a full length navy vintage cashmere belted coat, a grey cashmere and a cream Max Mara one.

An aviator jacket which is good for casual wear - it’s really warm so only really worn in winter.

A couple of shirt jackets for spring/summer casual wear when I just need a light later.

A fully waterproof proper Mackintosh which was expensive but is really classic and will last forever.

A casual Sweaty Betty waterproof for walking the dog.

A couple of faux fur coats just for fun.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 31/12/2021 16:23

I have:

  • Rain coat which doesn't look terrible for wearing around town in bad weather
  • Rain coat which is too ugly for wearing in town, but which is great for hiking
  • ankle length duvet coat for very cold, dry weather
  • brown cord, Teddy lined jacket
  • navy wool coat

I think that's it! So 5.

Amelion · 31/12/2021 16:24

Oh and one super warm waterproof puffer for when it’s really horrible cold weather and a wool/faux fur coat won’t be enough.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/12/2021 16:25

I no order of preference :
new M&S mid length puffer dark blue (zipped pockets )
Next black long puffer
M&S Collection leopard ( my DD hates it , calls it my Pat Butcher Coat , I;m thinking Kat Slater myself)
George at Asda thin long blue padded ( on its last legs)
M&S green parka
Trespass green waterproof

That covers all eventualities I reckon

womaninatightspot · 31/12/2021 16:30

I have an ancient didrikson I use for dogwalking. A newer Didrikson used for Autumn to spring. A couple of lighter linen jackets for summer. Some big cardis when it's not coat weather (rare- joys of the frozen north).

SarahJessicaParker1 · 31/12/2021 16:31

I do have a linen kimono thing for summer actually. So 6

Lucked · 31/12/2021 16:34

I have too many blazers to count, 4 leather jackets and at least double the number of coats as you. I have been on a buying hiatus for a while so maybe I am satisfied.

billydilly · 31/12/2021 16:37
  1. A gorgeous Toast one from this season and 2 Nancy Mac velvet ones. Whenever I wear one of the velvet coats I get positive comments from strangers, every time. I can't imagine how I'll cope when it falls to bits
ayegazumba · 31/12/2021 16:46

Oh god I have a coat problem. Always seem to find a new coat I 'need' for a very specific weather situation. Yesterday my husband made me sort my coats hanging in the hall and put the ones I don't need by the door in the hall cupboard upstairs (aka my coat cupboard) and just the excess coats downstairs totalled 9 Blush. I now have to avoid even looking at the coat section when I'm shopping online. I'm too scared to go upstairs and count them

pickingdaisies · 31/12/2021 16:46

Last year I also got a couple of "mid" coats that I didn't really need in the sales. I've worn them both so many times, one in particular, they've filled a gap that I wasn't really aware of before I had them. So don't feel bad - if you can afford them, buy them!

Roystonv · 31/12/2021 16:48

One (I don't feel the cold), black padded rarely worn but can be elegant, useful and respectful (funerals).

LondonQueen · 31/12/2021 16:52

Three coats I wear regularly, about 10 more in the walk-in wardrobe!

ufucoffee · 31/12/2021 16:54

I have a lightweight parka, a thicker parka and an even thicker parka. I have a black formal type coat. I have a wool single breasted coat that is a bright colour. I have similar in a dark colour. I have loads of jackets.

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 16:55

I have a cot problem too OP and waiting for a new one to arrive. I don't like to count 😬

Howshouldibehave · 31/12/2021 16:55

Hmmm, I have

A navy Next quilted jacket with hood. I wear this all of the time but it’s getting battered.
A thicker navy jacket-makes me look a bit big.
A long black M+S puffer coat-smart, I like.
A BIG long black Jack Wolfskin coat.
A black North Face waterproof jacket. Nice but rather rustley.
A khaki green cotton summer jacket.
A black fake leather jacket

I would also like a smart black fitted coat…

opinionminion · 31/12/2021 17:00

Approximately 40
