As I need inspiration to look after myself more but I hardly know where to begin other than I need to lose weight!

Hoping to get ideas from others as I'm not really into fashion and beauty and hoping to change this (within budget of course!)

@SarahJessicaParker1 have you had the Kerastraight before? I’m considering trying it out (although most salons near me seem to do Kerasilk instead), do you get your hair cut at the same time and how long do you find that it lasts for?

SarahJessicaParker1 · 27/12/2021 11:47

Yes, I've had it twice before. They last about 4 months for me, but tbh, I probably could get more out of them if I took better care with maintenance. I am not keen on the price or the smell of the special shampoo you're supposed to use so usually sack it off pretty quickly. This time I'll behave.

I also normally wash it off pretty quickly, but this time I'm planning to leave it for the full three days. Have booked it for a day when I have four days off in a row after so nobody has to see my greasy locks!

SarahJessicaParker1 · 27/12/2021 11:51

Re cut; I had min cut just before Christmas. I had a bad haircut a couple of months ago with same hairdresser (who I normally love, so think it was just a communication fail). I had to then have it cut into a chin length bob to even it out. Now I'm growing it back to about collar bone length at the front, a tiny bit shorter at the back. So I'm hoping the kerastraight will mean I can leave it till spring / summer 2022 for another cut.

Lupinspotato · 27/12/2021 12:00

@SarahJessicaParker1 ah that’s really helpful, thanks. I also want to grow my hair longer so maybe I just need to go for it!

thecherryontop · 27/12/2021 12:32

@TucciTucciTu yes to wearing the nice clothes I already have! Hopefully losing some weight will help with this but also I'm in such a school run rut where I literally wear the same things on rotation. And mostly black (in fact always). I've treated myself to a new bag so could be a good way to introduce colour for me.

@Nichebitch I'm with you on the organisation although I find when I batch cook I rarely return to it. I need to get better at meal planning... I take too long over it and get really stressed out. There has to be a better way to do it than how I currently do.

UnoriginalPenguin · 27/12/2021 12:43

I'm in. Thinking about improving one aspect of my beauty routine each month and seeing if I can make it stick. Should be easy to improve on my current look as a new cleanser brought me out in hives on boxing day Blush. I'm going to start with a weekly pedicure I think.

didireallysaythat · 27/12/2021 12:55

You've encouraged me to buy a pack of emery boards after I failed to find any in the kitchen drawer..... Baby steps.

Looking for tips for serious pedicure love - my feet are very neglected but I can't see having time to get a pedicure done at a salon before I retire....

AnotherMansCause · 27/12/2021 13:03

One to add for me - daily SPF. I used to be absolutely religious about using it every day but I've totally fallen out of the habit since the pandemic started. Mainly because I don't go out as much, I think, so it seems pointless. I'm 40 & have no wrinkles (yet) but I'm a bit paranoid about them. I do wear hats religiously though, in summer I wear a proper straw with a wide brim.

BamberGascoine · 27/12/2021 15:02

@didireallysaythat a Newtons chiropody sponge and heal balm. I think its called CCS or something like that. Nothing is as good as an actual pedicure but using these regularly (not just a one off) will help.

Is there anyone else like me reading these lists and feeling annoyed with themselves? I have vitamins, Vit D, good skin care, access to water etc etc. I’m annoyed for letting myself go like this. Although in fairness I’ve never really been together. It doesn’t come naturally to me.

First real mission is to sort my house. When it’s too cluttered and I can’t find anything the mental load is just too much

Henonthehill · 27/12/2021 15:45

I'm in. Every area of my life needs a reboot.
I'm aiming to start slow and make gradual changes...

-2L water each day
-Regular sleep routine
-Reduce screen time
-Read more
-No junk, increase veg and fruit
-Walk each day
-I have signed up for YWA for January
-I currently have no skin care routine to speak of so I want to work on that.

  • I have signed up for 2 CPD courses and I want to spend 3/4 hours per week on those.
  • Sunday night for planning
  • Organised Mum for the house

I aim to start January 1st. Good luck everyone!

Sunshinedreaming2022 · 27/12/2021 17:04

Can I join too please? My plan is:

Loose weight by cutting out processed foods
Exercise more - I’ve recently decided I am not a person who enjoys sweating but I am joining the gym when the kids return to school to go swimming 3 times a week
Less screen time, more mindfulness.
Take my make up off every evening!
File my nails - don’t bite them!
Capsule wardrobe of only things that I feel gorgeous in.

Chocolatetrifle · 27/12/2021 17:10

Feeling better today for sorting the kids wardrobes out and getting rid of old clothes. I'm determined to do a drawer each day of my own.

Have ordered my next boxed hair dye, no longer have salon highlights and have recently had a cut too.

Going to do nails tonight and body scrub etc.

Let's keep everyone going, it's great motivation if you know others are trying too.

Have drunk less tea and more water too to day. Will give up the chocolate on the 1st and reduce sugar generally.. I need to for health reasons as I had gestational diabetes when my second was born two years ago but old habits have crept back.

Good luck everyone, we can do it and feel the best we can!

What's YWA please?
Gufo · 27/12/2021 17:42

So many great ideas but I know if I try to add too many changes, I'll end up hating myself for failing. So, I'm going to try the yoga with adriene 30 day challenge - it will mean I'm moving, and yoga usually gives me the energy and inspo to look after myself better.

I've also booked a hair, hygienist and brow appointment for this week - already had, so should kick-start things. And tomorrow I'm going to buy some skincare and make up bits.

EllaPaella · 27/12/2021 17:46

I'm following too. I want to stick to no alcohol during the week (have slipped a bit over xmas) and am going to seriously try and up my water intake and cut down on caffeine.
I'm going to start running again and would like to get my brows microbladed so will start looking into where is best to get that done. If anyone is in the NE and can recommend someone I would be so grateful!
Must book a hair appointment too as I haven't had my balayage topped up since May Blush

Henonthehill · 27/12/2021 17:52

anotherneutralname YWA is Yoga With Adriene - She does a free 30 day challenge starting on January 1st. I really enjoy her videos and know once I get started, I will start to feel motivated to look after myself better x

heelforheelandtoefortoe · 27/12/2021 18:57

I'd quite like to treat myself to a pearl necklace and earrings, to look a bit posh. Have always wanted a set but worry it might be 'aging'. Anyone know where I can get a modern set that isn't too dear?

Also are there any dance lessons on youtube - I can't do yoga due to balance issues but I'd quite like to try some dance videos. Nothing too hard and preferably cheesy hits so I can enjoy it.

Love the pearl necklace and earrings idea OP - saw Claire Foy in A Very British scandal last night and can't get enough of that faux fur shawl and the pearl earrings and necklace. Love that look

blackberriesaretheonlyfruit · 27/12/2021 19:21

I've popped some olapex on my hair and have a facemask for after my shower. I'm about to settle down with a kindle book too. Baby steps.

RainbowCrayons · 27/12/2021 19:58

I would love to join in too. Drinking more water would be a key one for me and cutting drinking alcohol back to only on the weekend. I am not too worried about losing weight (although I wouldn't mind shifting 5kg) but getting more fruit and veg would help my skin clear up. I also want to work out 3 times a week and as it gets lighter in the evening go for walks in the evening too. Realistically, upping my exercise will mean that I don't lose weight but I will look more toned so I don't mind.

Weekends, I want to style my hair with my Dyson or with a curler and wear makeup. I got some lovely Charlotte Tillbury stuff and a couple of Dior lipsticks. My hair is growing out and looks thicker and longer than it has in years so I would like to keep that up. Using khiels shampoo and conditioner has really helped.

I managed to stop biting my nails long enough to get gels at the start of December and now they are really long. I managed to get the gels off myself (properly, rather than chewing them off like a crazy squirrel, as usual) and repaint them. I'm going to try to keep them painted a bright colour to remind me not to bite them. Right now they are OPIs Bogota Blackberry.

I managed to organize a great capsule wardrobe of winter clothes mostly from stuff I already had with a few new things and in the spring I will need to reorganize and refresh for summer clothes. Watching fashion bloggers is a guilty please of mine so I should have lots of inspiration but again I hope to mostly use what I have. Toning up would help with that too.

I'm also looking to do a big clear out and sort the house out at the same time but between work and DS who is 2 it's hard to find the time. I might try breaking it down and making a checklist.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 27/12/2021 20:26

I'm off to get a glass of water - thanks for the reminder rainbowcrayons!

Op, I bought a pearl necklace and earrings last year. I can't remember where from! Will have a Google.

heelforheelandtoefortoe · 27/12/2021 20:29

the person I aspire to look like is Kate Middleton. I'll never be her height or weight but I'd love to be able to copy her style in a cheaper way!

Is YWA suitable for a very inflexible yoga novice?

2022Bride · 27/12/2021 22:23

As my username suggests, I get married in 2022 and although I’m not usually one for photos I’m conscious that my wedding pics will be around for years to come! So I’d like to:
Sleep 8 hours a night (average!)
Drink 3L water a day
Walk 80,000 steps a week
Do my skincare each night
Do a hair mask each week
Lose 15 pounds before my wedding (may have left it a little late for this one!)
Do something about the grey hairs I have been ignoring
Pluck eyebrows weekly/veet top lip monthly
And I’m sure I’ll think of more!

Hoping we can use this as an accountability thread (just for our own personal satisfaction, not for any awful/competitive reasons)!

2022Bride · 27/12/2021 22:26

Just read the suggestions about lovely new clothes - definitely this too! I work for the NHS so have spent the last 2 years going between scrubs and PJs, and now all my clothes that were lovely when I was a student 2 years ago are starting to look a little bit not right on me Wink
