What age is Seasalt aimed at?

I went shopping for a coat today and the lady is my local boutique was trying to convince me that most school mums wear Seasalt coats and Seasalt is great for my needs (warm, stylish, waterproof).

She seemed abit put out when I mentioned I felt Seasalt were too old for me and I felt their target market is late 40s plus.

What age would you say Seasalt is aimed at?

I've got a few of the long sleeved sailor shirts and also have a couple of the t-shirt versions on the way. I avoid the twirly patterns, just because I like blockier colours, but like the quality of the material used in the tops. Also have a pair of black trousers, that are jean type material with elastic sides on the waist Grin

Am mid-40s.

@sandgrown

I am 64 and have an amazing Seasalt coat that is 100% waterproof. It’s great for dog walking and I don’t care if it’s old fashioned. It keeps me warm and dry .
Which one is it? I need a decent dog walking coat which is waterproof.
Lanique · 09/10/2021 06:20

My mum wears loads of Seasalt and she's 74. She also wears clothes from Wrap and Pure.

But if it suits you, wear it! Another thread is saying that Boden is for the over sixties yet I wear a lot of their plain basics such as their jeans. cashmere crew necks, linen dresses etc and I'm 45. I don't think I look particularly frumpy in any of it (I'm tall and thin though so probably helps). If you like it, wear it and sod what others think!

Lanique · 09/10/2021 06:21

I'm keen to look at Seasalt now as I need a good dog walking coat!

Annietheacrobat · 09/10/2021 06:32

I bought some ahem comfy Hotter shoes for work a few weeks ago. I gave the saleswoman my postcode and she said are you Mrs X? I said no (she was the now deceased 90 year old previous occupant of our house!). The saleswoman replied 'well she was a Hotter woman!'.

Annietheacrobat · 09/10/2021 06:33

@foxgoosefinch meant to tag you in post above

HarebrightCedarmoon · 09/10/2021 06:34

When you are a mum and doing the school run, practicality is the main thing with coats. Seasalt are really good at making stylish and practical coats which deal with everything the British weather throws at you.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 09/10/2021 06:45

I've got a "Westerley" which is brilliant for dog walking at this time of year. There are usually Seasalt jackets on eBay as well.

taybert · 09/10/2021 07:41

I’d wear the same dress as my mother, in fact we’ve shared clothes since I was a teenager. The only problem is she’s in better shape than me so her clothes don’t always fit me.

The sea salt website has models of lots of different ages. I think the point they’re making is that their clothes are for anyone. I think the grey haired model up thread looks great in that coat- I’ve got enough imagination to guess how it might look on me (I’m significantly younger than the model, but also a bit fatter and my bone structure isn’t as good), in the same way as when I look on the Cos website I understand that the clothing isn’t just for people who don’t smile.

We often complain that women become invisible at a certain age, it’s pretty offensive to older women to assume that they can’t be stylish because they’re older and I certainly hope in 20 years no one puts a coat away because they’ve seen me wearing it.

Lightswitch123 · 09/10/2021 07:44

@ADHDmaybe

I’d have said 50-70s
Me too. Its very frumpy, albeit practical looking
trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/10/2021 08:09

Anybody who wants to wear it would be my answer. What has a person's age got to do with their clothes choices?

Bagelsandbrie · 09/10/2021 08:11

Oh well I love Seasalt. I’m 40. It’s probably my favourite shop. I have a lot of the tops and a long raincoat from there, I think the plant hunter one. The quality is very good and I live rurally and find them really comfortable and practical.

That said, I do mix them up with stuff from Asos and H and M. I wear DMs and colourful fashionable trainers. I wouldn’t say I’m the height of fashion but I don’t think I look completely out of it either…! I love oversized stuff and layer a lot of things and go for an arty / country style and I’m happy with that.

I guess we don’t all like the same things!

You can often get discounts for Seasalt on the discounts for carers website if anyone is a carer. I’ve had lots of 50% discount codes.

Exactly.

I live in south norfolk. It’s basically just a world of mud and rain. Seasalt is perfect for that!

Verbena87 · 09/10/2021 08:16

I’ve been wearing odd Seasalt bits and bobs since my late teens. I’m not very cool though 🤷‍♀️🤣

PlayItCool · 09/10/2021 08:19

I just came on to say I think the grey haired model looks lovely and I really like her hair. Seasalt or no Seasalt.

Sunshineandgin · 09/10/2021 08:23

I'm not keen on the clothes at seasalt but I bought a waterproof coat from there when I was early 30's and it's still going strong a couple of years later. Main selling points were that the coat was actually waterproof, proper pockets and that they do petite sizing!

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 09/10/2021 08:27

I wear Seasalt for my muddy country lifestyle

Would never wear it for going to town though Grin

It’s sensible middle-aged/pensioner aged wear imo. (I am those things so no shade thrown Grin)

I buy it, I like it, it’s sensible. I also think it makes me look as attractive as a bag of spuds. But again, for an 8am dog walk through the fields that’s fine

holidaynearlyover · 09/10/2021 08:28

I have a rain coat which I bought from there 10 years ago as I wanted a cost which covered my bum and kept me dry. It's useful and looks more stylish than others I could get at that time. I still get people comment on how nice it is (and these are woman who I consider to dress with the trends and a lot more uptodate than me!)

I don't have other stuff from there but there are odd nice things which paired with other stuff looks ok. I clump it with Boden and Joules etc,

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/10/2021 08:49

Oh ffs. It doesn't bloody matter. If you like something and it has a place in your wardrobe, buy it. If you don't, don't. I am 25 years older than my daughter. We still like some of the same things. I'm 19 years younger than my mum. We still like some of the same things.

Taste, size, colouring, lifestyle matter far more than age.

RampantIvy · 09/10/2021 09:11

Well said @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie.

DD has got tired of a denim jacket, and given it to me. She is 21, and I am 62.

I think a lot depends on how you style clothes as well.

The ageism on this thread is disgusting.

CorianderAndCream · 09/10/2021 09:16

35+ Id say for things like coats

NigellaSeed · 09/10/2021 09:17

Sincere question, those saying seasalt and the like are frumpy/old etc, where does a non frumpy 25-35 shop? Not h&m but similar price and quality to seasalt?

Floisme · 09/10/2021 09:22

If you're worried about catching age from clothes I advise you to stay away from H&M. I was in there the other day and handled quite a few things which will all be imprinted now with my 65-year-old DNA.
I also ave grey hair - I'm so shameless I don't even dye it - and no doubt shedded a few in there so go carefully.

taybert · 09/10/2021 09:29

@Floisme I was thinking how offended I’d be if when I’m in my 60s I make women in their 30s and 40s abandon clothing simply by being associated with it. But then I got to thinking that might actually turn in to quite a fun game, I could see what all the trendy mums are wearing, then buy it and make a point of standing near them in the supermarket with all my shameless age then they’d have to buy new things and I could do it again.
Might start doing it with 20 year olds actually. What fun!

Floisme · 09/10/2021 09:44

Yes it can be taybert
By the way I also ordered some trousers recently from Uniqlo and returned them. Just think if you shop there, any one of you could have ended up with them. Go carefully people.
