Apparently obsolete fashion rules that you stick with regardless

For me it's 'Leggings must be worn with something that COVERS YOUR BUM'

I'm sorry, even with teenagers with lovely pert derrieres, leggings and top that stops at your waist look like you haven't got dressed properly, and on those of us with less than gravity-defying butts (such as myself) it just looks horribly unflattering, especially if you wear cheapass leggings where the fabric goes all see-through when stretched.

What rules do you stick to, even if out of fashion?

Spectacles must flatter you.

Fugly glasses that are the wrong shape and size for your face seem to be the cooler choice and it makes me feel ancient.

MorrisZapp · 05/10/2021 12:19

Red and green should never be seen

Anordinarymum · 05/10/2021 12:21

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
..except on fools...

Miseryisabutterfly · 05/10/2021 12:27

I love red and green 😂

LaBellina · 05/10/2021 12:31

Boyfriend jeans have this name for a reason. I think they’re for men and I refuse to wear them Grin. I’ll live and die in my skinny jeans Grin

GinIronic · 05/10/2021 12:31

@MorrisZapp

Red and green should never be seen
Tell that to the red roses with green leaves in my vase Grin
MichelleScarn · 05/10/2021 12:33

And Santa and the elves!

SantanaBinLorry · 05/10/2021 12:33

I love a good mix of colours and dig a gaudy clash but red and green together just make you look like an elf.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 12:38

Black trousers shouldn't be worn with a brightly coloured top. As said by Trinny and Susannah back in ye dayes of yore. The early 00's.

CoronaPeroni · 05/10/2021 12:38

What's wrong with red and green?
When I was young it was pink and green is fit for a queen, blue and green should never be seen. And I stood by the blue and green thing for about 40 yearsConfused

PuppyMonkey · 05/10/2021 12:40

Don’t mess too much with your eyebrows. Grin

Brollywasntneededafterall · 05/10/2021 12:43

My dm told me never to wear black and blue or you will look like a bruise!
Love denim and black!! Right rebel me!!

YessicaHaircut · 05/10/2021 12:43

Cycling shorts should only be worn for cycling. I couldn’t believe it when they were back in fashion recently and all the trendy students around town were wearing them.

ShrikeAttack · 05/10/2021 12:44

I'd agreed with that @PuppyMonkey, it leads to all kinds of unpleasantness!

(Am very grateful I left the buggers alone in the 90s).

CandleWick4 · 05/10/2021 12:44

Skinny jeans. I will never give up my skinny jeans

Magicpaintbrush · 05/10/2021 12:44

That winter coats should have buttons - what is this sudden craze I'm seeing everywhere of winter coats with no buttons at all or one puny button? What is the actual point???? I want a proper coat that I can button up from neck to foof that will keep out the cold!!!!!!!!!

PineappleWilson · 05/10/2021 12:46

Wrap dresses and trousers together, so the dress acts as a long shirt. May be 20 years out of date but I still love the look.

Echobelly · 05/10/2021 12:46

I'll confess that, although I don't own a pair at the moment whispers - I like boot cut indigpo jeans.

Also on the subject of coats - smart double breasted coats, where the hell are they all? Ten years ago they were everywhere, lovely coats with six buttons or more on the front, nice and cosy, looked smart with jeans and boots. Now everything is teddy bear coats or boyfriend coats or coats that skim the floor, shackets (!) and the despicable coats with zero buttons Confused . I just want a proper coat.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 05/10/2021 12:51

'despicable coats' Grin

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 05/10/2021 12:56

I'm still laughing at neck to foof! Grin

God I miss the days of wrap dress over trousers...so comfortable and really suited my shape!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/10/2021 13:00

YABU re leggings, though I only wear them for yoga. I don't wear a top that covers my bum though I do try to wear one that doesn't ride up.

Boot cut indigo jeans have been back in fashion again for ages. I bought some this summer.

Redcrayons · 05/10/2021 13:05

It was Blue and green should never be seen in my day.

Big boobs = v neck and never a polo. I’ve tried polo necks many times, but I can’t shake that rule off. (Thanks Trinny and Susannah)
My own personal rule is no leggings outside the house unless exercising. My standards have slipped with WFH and I’ve broken this one a few times. Always cover my bum though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/10/2021 13:11

I agree 100% with leggings covering your bottom. Especially if it’s a massive wobbly one, clad in something that looks more like thin tights than leggings. So often with a top that doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Not a pretty sight.

My DM used to tell me that you should never wear heels with trousers. Some fashion editor had apparently decreed this way back, very likely even pre WW2 (she was born 1918) and she believed it to be the eleventh commandment for ever afterwards.

I asked her whether she didn’t realise that fashions change, and did she really think some self-styled fashion ‘expert’s’ word was still gospel over 50 years later? It was like arguing with a brick wall.

Odd really because she was generally quite stylish and would never wear frumpy old lady clothes even in her 80s.
