Bags to die for (or just save up for)

My friend turned up for a night out with a gorgeous handbag. It was a Mulberry one. Lovely, but not quite the one I would like. But I don’t know what I would like.
She said she’s been wanting it for five years and been saving up.
So what bag should I save up for five years for?
Please show me the bags you’re lusting after, or possibly the ones you already own.

I love this one but could never justify spending the best part of £800 on a bag www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/shop/product/stella-mccartney/bags/shoulder-bags/vegetarian-leather-shoulder-bag/2204324140330670

@MummyJ12

I'm intrigued are the rumours true you have to 'build a relationship' to get a Birkin?

Scoose · 03/10/2021 17:45

I have a big birthday this year and can't decide between the ysl Lou camera bag or the Gucci soho disco help!

MummyJ12 · 03/10/2021 17:48

Yes, @postingfortraffichere it’s absolutely true. Even when you’ve built up that relationship, there’s a bit of a wait until it’s your turn to win the Birkin that’s just come in to the boutique. Although Hermes won’t confirm or deny, it’s estimated that only 12,000 Birkins are made each year (it takes an Hermes artisan a minimum of 18 hours to hand make a Birkin, using a two needle technique that takes months to perfect).
I’ve heard of people being politely removed from boutiques because they’ve caused scenes that they won’t leave until they’re sold one.
There is a wait list. Hermes claims there’s not but there most definitely is, unless you’re uber high profile or a high roller.
So you have to find a sales associate that you just click with, build a relationship, invest in the brand and eventually you’ll get the golden call or email. Smile

The YSL imo 💗

'My sister spent a fortune on a mulberry handbag a few years ago. She saved birthday money, Christmas money and some money each month until she could buy one from Bicester. Then she filled it with her primark purse and makeup bag, hairbrush from the pound shop, cheap sunglasses and tesco brolly.'

I found that strangely poignant, actually.

Scoose · 03/10/2021 17:54

I am leaning towards that one MummyJ

Chanel all the way for me. I bought a gorgeous purple Boy recently and I love it. In fact I love the whole experience of visiting the boutique and the SA showing you all the options. Bliss!

ElspethFlashman · 03/10/2021 18:45

Ysl for me. It looks more luxe. But here's a comparison video!

@MummyJ12

This is my collection. I use the etoupe the most 💗
Do you ever feel nervous walking around with an Hermes bag? I'd imagine in places like Knightsbridge there are thieves out to relieve people of their £££ handbags. Mugging to order.
Scoose · 03/10/2021 19:14

Thanks Elspeth now I've changed my mind about the soho disco and am
Dithering between the ysl and this

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/10/2021 19:23

I prefer the chevron pattern on the YSL to the one on the Gucci

evtheria · 03/10/2021 19:29

I’ve watched soooo many videos on YouTube about the Hermes ‘buying history’ - from those who explain it in detail to others who have had a ‘bad experience’/refuse to buy from the brand. As someone who appreciates the work that goes into one, but isn’t a fan of them (maybe the mini Constance, or a small Kelly, at a push) I found it fascinating how the whole loyalty thing works. It really is a genius business strategy!

I’m hoping to get the Chloe Marcie for my 50th next month

I’m definitely careful when and where I carry my Hermes @StrychnineInTheSandwiches. I’m lucky (or naive) to almost never feel nervous when I’m out with a Birkin, although, I was in London when we were sat in a restaurant and someone warned me to be careful. I admit that I live in a bubble in York and to be honest I’m more nervous about putting them on the floor 😂 (they always have their own chair!)

IloveJudgeJudy · 03/10/2021 19:52

@Hubcapdiamondstarhalo I have that bag in taupe. I really love it. i use it for work and it can take everything I need plus a China cup, teabags and small chilly bottle for my tea. I love Aspinal bags anyway. You won't be disappointed.

GingerBeverage · 03/10/2021 20:02

I can never justify suede but love the luxurious feel of it.

@GingerBeverage I love the Lily! I’ve been lusting over a standard size black Lily with silver hardware for years. I’m not sure though because I don’t know how much I’d use it. It’s more a going out bag than every day bag 🤷‍♀️

That’s lovely @OverByYer I’m also coming up to 50, my birthday is in January.
Peraltiago · 03/10/2021 20:11

I really want a wine coloured Faure le Page vertical Battle tote, but cannot justify £1k on a glorified shopper bag. I tend to scour second hand sites for my bags, have some lovely vintage Pradas and about five or six classic (not logoed) Coach bags picked up when I go to the states. I quite like some Mulberry but find them so heavy in themselves that they’re not great to carry. I have a Phoebe somewhere in the wardrobe, from before they got stupidly expensive. Am thinking about maybe an Aspinal some time. I usually like plain leather with no trimmings, some of the croc-type Aspinalls look a bit garish… one day I will be a grown up and get a YSL or Chanel…

I hope you do get it. It’s a beautiful bag!
ElspethFlashman · 03/10/2021 20:26

Scoose there are definitely comparison videos about the Gucci Marmont and the YSL too, it'd be worth a look.

The Marmont is far nicer than the Soho and is more on a par with the YSL imo, so if it came down to it I'd probably pick the one that fits more stuff!

ElspethFlashman · 03/10/2021 20:32

Re: the regular Lily.

I love it but you can fit sweet fuck all in it, so it's definitely an evening bag. I can get phone, (small) purse and lippy in it but keys need to be wedged in a bit!

I have a limited edition scalloped one and it's so pretty though.

GingerBeverage · 03/10/2021 20:34

I have that exact bag and use it often Smile It's surprisingly versatile as silver seems more low key and the black leather is nice and matte.

Lily is such a simple bag, that's why I like it.

RussianSpy101 · 03/10/2021 20:36

I love bags and have several “favourites” that I use regularly but I would never have them if they took 5 years to save for.
