Dungarees: yes or no?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:28

Alyson Walsh in the Saturday Telegraph is extolling the virtues of dungarees. So wise mumsnetters should I take the plunge?
Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...
I am slightly younger than Alison and also have grey hair, if that makes a difference.

OP posts:

Hmm
Kanaloa · 14/09/2021 22:42

@brittleheadgirl

She was only answering the question as it was set in the op. OP asked suitable, or just for toddlers? That was her actual wording.

And then the above poster said no, just for toddlers.

I've just bought some denim ones from next . I'm a bit disappointed that I don't suddenly look like dawn o'porter in them and going to the toilet is a mega faff especially now colder and having to take a cardy off (straps down the loo etc!) but they are v comfy I think I've shrunk in the last year size wise so think they're slightly too baggy . I'm off to google Alyson Walsh

Emmelina · 14/09/2021 22:51

Nearly 41 and have a growing collection from Lucy and Yak. So comfortable! Also eyeing up a lovely green velvet cord pair I spotted in the latest Joe Browns thing they sent out Grin

MeredithGreyishblue · 14/09/2021 23:00

I really want a pair but I'm tall and very wide. I may well look like I've turned up to decorate your living room.
But most of me doesn't give a fuck and is really tempted...

Do it! Honestly I struggle to wear anything else now and have even got speedier at getting them off & on for the loo! Grin
EccentricaGalumbits · 15/09/2021 05:46

I've seen some women really rock them but they are almost universally short and slim with a quirky style.

They are mostly unflattering on everyone else. Not that I subscribe to the idea that everything you wear has to be flattering - comfort and fun is important too!

ExpectingToFly · 15/09/2021 08:00

I'm going to dip my toe in and try these ones. Just plain and baggy

Dungarees: yes or no?
TomorrowSomething · 15/09/2021 08:08

I've taken the plunge. Blue denim pair and black tencel pair on the way to try on. I'm quite short in the leg but feeling hopeful - the denim ones are a cropped style. (What is tencel like?)

ILoveShula · 15/09/2021 08:13

Tencel is a bit like viscose

I've ordered those exact ones as well! Have never worn dungarees but my neighbour looks fab in them, so I will to obvs 😂😂
Phoebesgift · 15/09/2021 08:22

Unless you're aged under 12 always no.

TolkiensFallow · 15/09/2021 08:24

I’m 38. Size 14. 5”8. Dyed my greys.
Wear them all the time and love them.
Do it.

givinglessfucksdaily · 15/09/2021 08:24

@ExpectingToFly they are lovely !

StarlightLady · 15/09/2021 08:50

I don’t like them and would never wear them. But variety is the spice of life.

TolkiensFallow · 15/09/2021 09:14

I think everyone has a pet hate though. Mine is tracksuits. I would never wear one unless doing PE but you seen women wearing them on the school run all the time!

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 15/09/2021 10:03

I really like them...I have very spendy ones from wyse London in black. Comfy and easy to throw on (like a dress really in terms of ease), over a short sleeve top, cardy over them when it's cooler...I've had lots of nice comments on them.
Unfortunately my DP and my DD's HATE them... which shouldn't really matter but has put me off a bit

lindyloo57 · 15/09/2021 10:07

Pet hate of mine is leggings with a short top, sorry but I just think it looks tacky, unless your are a child.

ILoveShula · 15/09/2021 10:11

Ugh. Leggings with the bum not covered. Great big wobbly buttocks , often with the thong quite visible.

Another thumbs up for @ExpectingToFly's black pair

It's funny you say this as I think dungarees are the new version of leggings .
Lovemusic33 · 15/09/2021 10:20

I have tracksuits and leggings when bums are on show, most leggings are see through and show cellulite (not that there’s anything wrong with cellulite but I don’t want it on show).

Dungarees and boiler suits are just practical and stylish for me, I am short, slim and quirky 🤣, not sure if I look good but I love them. I love the fact I don’t have to think out a whole outfit, just dungarees and a plain short sleeved top or vest.

I have realised that I also need some jeans in my life and not just dungarees and harem trousers 🤣

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/09/2021 10:27

Well as the last couple of posts remind us, some people need to have a think about their attitudes...

I don't like an item of clothing personally and wouldn't wear it = fine.

I don't like an item of clothing and judge women who wear it = not fine.

I don't like an item of clothing and judge women who wear it and also judge and critique their body = really not fucking fine at all.

Snailhaterz2 · 15/09/2021 10:28

I wish they suited me, as they fit my lifestyle. But I've tried several times, and I either look like an overgrown toddler or a painter/decorator.

You need to read the OP and see what she asked as opposed to being blinded by your own ideas and beliefs.
ILoveShula · 15/09/2021 10:40

If you mean my post, I don't have any choice when someone is walking down the high street in front of me wearing thin leggings.
I don't critique their bodies just their dress sense

Young, old, male, female, any gender, whatever, I don't need to know what underwear you are wearing.

Another pet hate: baggy skinny joggers with things stuffed into the pockets
