Dungarees: yes or no?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:28

Alyson Walsh in the Saturday Telegraph is extolling the virtues of dungarees. So wise mumsnetters should I take the plunge?
Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...
I am slightly younger than Alison and also have grey hair, if that makes a difference.

OP posts:

I like dungarees. I have a few pairs. Good for discreet breastfeeding

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

"You need to read the OP and see what she asked as opposed to being blinded by your own ideas and beliefs."

@MrsMaizel if you read my post properly I was talking more generally in response to the last few posts, not the OP. Blinded by my own ideas and beliefs that women shouldn't be unkind and judgmental of other women and their bodies? OK then....

@givinglessfucksdaily I totally agree with your username, I wear whatever the fuck I want and don't give a fuck whatever other women wear, apart from hoping they are confident enough to feel happy. I wish that that other women who are judging them start to give less fucks themselves and we support each other instead of being shitty and unkind.

As for the men don't find dungarees attractive...where to start with that? Hmm I don't dress to make myself attractive to men and genuinely don't give a fuck what they think. Naturally I would like my DH to find me attractive Wink but we have been together long enough to know our appearances change (and with things more serious than wearing dungarees) but we still love each other and hopefully find each other attractive because of that!

I may or may not walk around the house with no T shirt under my dungarees and it makes us both laugh and DH seems to like it Smile I love dungarees and have worn them since the 90s, in fact DD now wears a pair I tie-died myself in about 1996. I borrow a navy corduroy pair she bought recently so we are even Grin

You are still not getting it !

She said Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...

She asked for judgement but you are leaping in accusing us of judging and doing it yourself !

BlueSussex · 15/09/2021 17:58

I really wish I could.

But I can't.

I do wear a denim pinafore dress though.

ineedsun · 15/09/2021 23:31
@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles the point I made about men was just conversational musing because I struggle to imagine many grown men finding a woman in dungarees attractive. They’re just so unflattering and usually very shapeless, not to mention childlike! I did say of course we shouldn’t dress for men, because it seems you have to caveat the obvious on here! The Op was asking for honest opinions which people are expressing-the world would be a dull place if we all agreed. A debate about dungarees doesn’t need to be taken quite so seriously!
This is funny, my DH keeps buying me dungarees. I wasn’t overly fussed when he bought me the first pair but I love them now and wear them a lot.

He really likes the way they look.

goose1964 · 16/09/2021 12:29

I'd look like a kids TV presenter, actually I'd love to do that

SallyWD · 16/09/2021 19:48

I really don't like thrm and I cringe when I see women (or men!) wearing them. Maybe I'm just weird.

Bertiebiscuit · 17/09/2021 00:21

No, not for those of us who wore them the 1st time around - but this applies to many fashions - flares, clompy shoes, clogs,..........................

Yeah I had bright red ones 😂 in the 1970s.
givinglessfucksdaily · 17/09/2021 05:59

@Bertiebiscuit New Look is full of flares ! I cringed as I walked past them .. gosh we could be rich if we never threw away any clothes
Wonder when leg warmers and ra ra skirts will be coming ?

Pippapet · 17/09/2021 06:19

Depends on the individual. Some people look amazing in them, others really don't, like any other fashion.

DartmoorDoughnut · 17/09/2021 06:23

I LOVE my dungarees, although I don’t care much what I look like so possibly not helpful?! I particularly like them when AF is visiting and I don’t want my tummy squashed

midsomermurderess · 17/09/2021 08:31

Bloody hell, the rancour and bickering on here. So even style and beauty is now being patrolled for any and every possible infraction against the sisterhood. Some of you are utterly ridiculous. Especially the ones giving it all 'fuck, fuck, fuck'. You think it makes you sound like impassioned feminists. In fact, you just sound very silly.

I used to wear bright red ones in the 90s whilst at races and festivals.

I don’t buy into this ‘if you wore it first time round you shouldn’t wear them this time round’ I used to but then I got a grip and am much happier (and stylish!)

Stop with your common sense! It has no place on this thread Grin

There’s only a couple nasty posts, most are saying “wear what you like”, obviously people like different things, there are things I wouldn’t wear but I don’t really give a toss what other people wear. I don’t dress like other people, I don’t keep up with fashion because I have my own style (which I know isn’t everyone’s taste), I don’t want to look like everyone else, I don’t want to be uncomfortable so I wear what I like, not what other people like. I love dungarees as long as they fit me nicely, baggy ones I am happy wearing around the house but prefer fitted ones when out and about.

Sadly women will always comment on how others dress but more so on here than face to face. I’m sure no one on this thread is going up to another woman and telling her ‘she looks ridiculous’?
