Dungarees: yes or no?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:28

Alyson Walsh in the Saturday Telegraph is extolling the virtues of dungarees. So wise mumsnetters should I take the plunge?
Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...
I am slightly younger than Alison and also have grey hair, if that makes a difference.

@brittleheadgirl, of course women are allowed to wear whatever they want to and what makes then feel good. Personally I don't like them and won't ever wear them again, but if you want to, good for you.

I'm as much entitled to my opinion as you are, so why you feel sorry for me (or my friends) I really don't know.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/09/2021 21:18

I’m 50 and I wear them. I find them really comfy.

I’ve got the Fat Face ones but I find them a bit baggy so I’m going to eBay them I think. I bought a denim pair from Joules which fit me much better and they hold their shape better. I’ve, also, got a jersey pair from Sainsburys which are my favourite.

KirstenBlest · 12/09/2021 21:23

@Lovemusic33, it's not just me then. I have 10 too.

grey12 · 12/09/2021 21:35

Have hated them all my life!!! Confused

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/09/2021 23:34

40s, and have some slim black denim dungarees, and a wide legged slightly cropped pair in tan cord. I love them, and have worn them a lot more since WFH. I really wanted to like the L&Y ones but they were just too shapeless for me. I’m 5ft 6 and a size 10.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 12/09/2021 23:47

I'm 37, and I love them. I have Fat Face ones, a topshop boiler suit, and some that I made from a floaty fabric. I'm about to make another pair in cord in a baggier style a bit like Lucy and Yak. I tend not to wear them much in winter though as toilet trips in dungarees and a coat are a pain in the arse!

Kanaloa · 13/09/2021 00:04

I don’t see why not - I don’t like them on me, they never seem to fit right on the top, either uncomfortably tight or they sort of gape at the sides. But they can look good on other people.

Lovemusic33 · 13/09/2021 07:06

I agree about the L&Y, for me they look to baggy and shapeless, I bought a pair of the short ones but I only wear them in the garden as they are not very flattering, for me the run and fly ones fit perfect, I’m a 5”3 size 10/12 and I find the xs fit perfectly, I have 2 pairs of full length and one short pair, I would love a red pair but they are OOS in my size. I also have a pair of GAP denim dungarees that I love but I’ve broken one of the clips on them 😭. I have just bought my first boiler suit from Hush and I’m hoping I will love it as much as my dungarees.

Bluntness100 · 13/09/2021 07:14

It’s a no from me, personally I’d not wear them but I do believe if you like them then you should.

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 13/09/2021 09:42

Omg yes- the tie straps of the L & Y ones. So annoying. I’ve always loved dungaree buckles and run and fly have that

pommedeterre · 13/09/2021 09:47

I LOVE my Wyse ones purchased early Spring this year. I look forward to wearing them! I would advise to go a bit more spenny to get the cut right I think, have tried on cheaper dungarees before but ended up returning.

MaybePGCE · 13/09/2021 09:48

Yes for me but I won’t be buying new ones as I have some already, a slimmer fit black pair and a more relaxed lighter blue pair. Both denim.

MaybePGCE · 13/09/2021 09:50

I’m a 12, 5’8” and 40ish if that makes a difference.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 13/09/2021 09:51

I love dungarees and have lots of them. They're so comfy and the L&Y ones have massive pockets which I appreciate. I'm 33 and my figure very much says "I've had 2 kids" but I don't really care, I will not be parted from my dungarees.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 13/09/2021 13:07

I love seeing them on other people but they just don’t suit me (short, size 10, large of nork). I just look like a barrel when I put them on.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/09/2021 17:07

Thanks for all replies and I think It’s going to be a no.
The run and fly dungarees look great and ideal Xmas present territory for dd.

I think slim denim or cord ones look great but the Lucy and yak decorator / baby ones look hideous

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 13/09/2021 18:37

I don’t usually get involved in these “can I wear…?” threads but today, I saw a lady in very floral dungarees and T shirt. I just thought “No!” She looked like a giant toddler and just uncomfortable. She was pulling constantly at the back of them as if they were too tight and she was probably mid 30’s.

I’m usually of the “your body, wear what you want” brigade but not on this one.

notacooldad · 13/09/2021 19:09

Nearly every adult I've seen in the Lucy and Yak ones looks like a CBBC presenter so that always puts me off.
I haven't got the personality to pull the dungarees look off.

lindyloo57 · 13/09/2021 21:00

I've just ordered 3 pairs to try, 2 short styles and a cream full length pair from John Lewis in the sale.

IrishMumInLondon2020 · 14/09/2021 21:41

Why so aggressive and unpleasant @brittleheadgirl? I’m only giving my opinion on dungarees, not stating my position on the Middle East or the transgender debate (though I am, of course, happy to do so on both points). Perhaps you should reflect on how your own friends might feel about you if you act like this in real life. And, again, no need to fret about my friends. Flowers

Aggressive and unpleasant?!! Er, hardly.

Just irritated and weary at yet another women policing and/or making unpleasant remarks about what others choose to wear. And sad, really sad that women are still behaving like this in 2021.

Not even remotely aggressive and no more unpleasant then the sneering comments about women wearing dungarees that you and others had made.

brittleheadgirl · 14/09/2021 21:56

@IrishMumInLondon2020
Incidentally, my friends would also despise your attitude.
Like me, they are fully supportive of whatever another women chooses to wear and would never make snide little comments about how someone looks (like accusing grown women of looking like toddlers)

IrishMumInLondon2020 · 14/09/2021 22:07

Good lord, you really need to take a step away from the screen @brittleheadgirl

Your friends would ‘despise’ my attitude towards dungarees? Hmm I think I can live with that. Grin

Take it easy.

Take it easy GrinGrin Yes, they would. Op asked for opinions about dungarees and you chose to be unkind. We obviously have different standards, evident in your odd replies Confused
