Dungarees: yes or no?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/09/2021 18:28

Alyson Walsh in the Saturday Telegraph is extolling the virtues of dungarees. So wise mumsnetters should I take the plunge?
Yes or don’t be ridiculous you will look like a toddler...
I am slightly younger than Alison and also have grey hair, if that makes a difference.

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles
Well said but as my name suggests ....

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/09/2021 10:44

I'm not sure... I like them in theory, and I've see lots of people they look good on. I also like cord/needle cord so I do like the idea of a winter pair.

However for me, I'm definitely not quirky, and I'm also fairly hourglass-y — would they just go from bust to hip and make me look like a rectangle?

TheVolturi · 15/09/2021 10:50

I do think some women look great in them. Usually skinny trendy types!

badassbitch · 15/09/2021 11:00

Im hourglass size 10-12. I literally live in tight dungarees. I think they really compliment my figure but i cant wear baggy ones. The rolled up skinny ones are ace i think, and i never have to worry about muffin top

Rummikubfan · 15/09/2021 11:02

I love the Wyse London ones. I have similar and style with the blouses. Totally different look and feel to the Y&L ones.

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 15/09/2021 11:07

I can’t stand them, I think they look ridiculous on a grown woman and possibly the least stylish outfit imaginable. Those Lucy and Yak ones are worn by a very specific type of woman, they’re the ultimate cliche where I live. Not that we should dress for men of course, but I can’t help wondering if there is a man walking this planet who sees his wife or girlfriend wander past looking like an overgrown tellytubby and thinks ‘phwoar’. Rock on if you like them but the OP asked for opinions!

ILoveShula · 15/09/2021 11:10

skinny shoulders and arms. Quite short but not petite. One colour 'lengthens' body. can wear breton underneath. I won't wear a breton otherwise because I usually get told that my boobs are huge when I do -they're an enormous 32C I don't know how I manage to stand upright with such huge norks

The men who have chatted me up while I was wearing my dungarees certainly thinking of their wives or girlfriends
ILoveShula · 15/09/2021 11:14

weren't thinking

highwoodwitch · 15/09/2021 11:38

Some phrases are just the standard unoriginal response like rattling around in a house or looking like a toddler in dungarees. Nobody actually rattles nor toddles.
Anyway I still love mine.

There has already been an, erm, 'expression of interest' in how I'll look in dungarees here and my order hasn't even arrived yet! So yes, I'm expecting a 'phwoar' at the very least Grin
MayorGoodwaysChicken · 15/09/2021 12:43

@TomorrowSomething thanks for sharing that Envy

Twinkie01 · 15/09/2021 12:55

Baukjen do a great denim pair.

Stasiland · 15/09/2021 13:04

Hate to say it as I'm one of them but I tend to think that they are the dress of middle aged women trying to look a bit quirky. Particularly if twinned with stripey top and those head band things with the bow on top. I have a pair of seasalt ones and yes they are well made but do nothing for my figure (having seen a photo of myself in them !).

Men wear dungarees too…, I have a little thing for men in dungarees 🤣🤣. I’m single and wear them, men have complemented me but then I hang out with quirky people that probably don’t find women dressed in standard clothes that exciting. People are attracted to different things and people have different fashion sense.
Pigtailsandall · 15/09/2021 13:08

I have a fitted denim dungarees from Toast and I draw the line there - I don't think I could, nor would like to, pull of a pair of patterned ones. Personally I would feel clownish, but I do know some brands like L&Y and Run&Fly have a die-hard cult following. Wasn't there a big L&Y drama about a Facebook group (or something) a while back?
I wear my dungarees almost exclusively when I'm with my child, though, I wouldn't go to work or to a lunch with friends wearing them. They're quite flattering on my hourglass shape, but to me they scream "I'm a mum". Not that there's anything wrong with that, sometimes I just like to don a different persona.

santaclawzz · 15/09/2021 13:10

yeah they're acceptable.. if you're Bing 😂

misskatamari · 15/09/2021 13:16

Yes yes yes!!! Wear what makes you happy! I've always wanted dungarees but thought I was "too fat" or "too xyz". Last year I saw some in Sainsbury's and I just thought, fuck it! I bloody want some dungarees! Bought them and I LOVE them! I've got blue and black denim ones and have since made some bright pink ones and am currently making myself a tartan pair ❤️❤️❤️

If you want to wear dungarees, then you wear dungarees. Anyone who would think bad about how you dress can just fuck off!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/09/2021 13:24

"You need to read the OP and see what she asked as opposed to being blinded by your own ideas and beliefs."

@MrsMaizel if you read my post properly I was talking more generally in response to the last few posts, not the OP. Blinded by my own ideas and beliefs that women shouldn't be unkind and judgmental of other women and their bodies? OK then....

@givinglessfucksdaily I totally agree with your username, I wear whatever the fuck I want and don't give a fuck whatever other women wear, apart from hoping they are confident enough to feel happy. I wish that that other women who are judging them start to give less fucks themselves and we support each other instead of being shitty and unkind.

As for the men don't find dungarees attractive...where to start with that? Hmm I don't dress to make myself attractive to men and genuinely don't give a fuck what they think. Naturally I would like my DH to find me attractive Wink but we have been together long enough to know our appearances change (and with things more serious than wearing dungarees) but we still love each other and hopefully find each other attractive because of that!

I may or may not walk around the house with no T shirt under my dungarees and it makes us both laugh and DH seems to like it Smile I love dungarees and have worn them since the 90s, in fact DD now wears a pair I tie-died myself in about 1996. I borrow a navy corduroy pair she bought recently so we are even Grin

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/09/2021 13:26

My DD is a young adult, perhaps I should have said that! She looks fucking awesome in my dungarees.

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 15/09/2021 13:28

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles the point I made about men was just conversational musing because I struggle to imagine many grown men finding a woman in dungarees attractive. They’re just so unflattering and usually very shapeless, not to mention childlike! I did say of course we shouldn’t dress for men, because it seems you have to caveat the obvious on here! The Op was asking for honest opinions which people are expressing-the world would be a dull place if we all agreed. A debate about dungarees doesn’t need to be taken quite so seriously!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 15/09/2021 13:48

@MayorGoodwaysChicken, l I take your point about taking stuff too seriously, but it's a shame a thread about dungarees ended up with women being unkind about other women's clothes and bodies, and whether men find them attractive. Ah well.

To lighten my posts, I recently bought a pair of quite thick black cotton dungarees (I didn't like them on myself, they were far too long, so they were going back anyway) and when I showed them to DH he said "I think they are nice dungarees do they make them for women too?"

Grin
givinglessfucksdaily · 15/09/2021 13:53

To add to the fun of the dungarees ... my daughter has told me they would make a good shoplifting outfit
All I need to do is stick 2 elastic bands round my ankles I think I could get away with a full leg of lamb , few tins of cat food , multipack of crisps and some blueberries without anyone even noticing
My pic is a few pages back - you'll see what I mean 🤣

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/09/2021 13:56

I can't get the hang of boiler suits as fashion though. I have two (one navy and one orange with high-vis strips). They lives in my garage and are for doing dirty jobs!

Although they are made by Dickies, which is now selling "fashion" ones, so perhaps I should just bite the bullet and go to Sainsbury's in the navy one...

YoureTheTop · 15/09/2021 15:32

You could get a few bottles of wine in too
