This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

Who is saying they're over, apart from people trying to sell a different shape?

SwayingInTime · 19/08/2021 20:01

I was out today and all youngsters were wearing stretchy flares or baggy jeans. It was universal.

It's something said on a regular basis on these boards?

That’s strange because I’m also in London and spend most of my time marvelling at the fact that the clothes of my youth (90s) are back. So many young women with baggy jeans, crop tops and trainers.. Hardly any skinnies.. I keep wondering when cargo pants will be back in. Surely anytime now..

MintyCedric · 19/08/2021 20:03

It's ripped mum jeans for the teens these days...I'm sticking with my skinnies.

Standrewsschool · 19/08/2021 20:04

I did a survey in Bluewater the other day. One teen wore slim flares and looked stunning. There was a mixture of skinnies, mom jeans and slim jeans. What surprised me was the number of people wearing leggings.

BestZebbie · 19/08/2021 20:04

I’m trying to “use up” my last few skinnies by wearing them all the time atm, replacing them with other shapes as I go along. Maybe others are doing the same?

They already are 👏🏼

What are you counting as skinny/slim leg? Where I live I see very few flares/wide legs, but almost everyone under 40 is wearing something a bit like this which I think are slim cut but not skinny.

Cargos are back in. My dd has just bought some. Her and her friends wear baggy wide legs or slouchy jeans.

Skinnies are on the way out.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 19/08/2021 20:05

I've only been able to fit into skinny jeans in the last few months so no way anyone is prising them off me any time soon. I'm making up for years of not being able to wear them.

LadyCatStark · 19/08/2021 20:09

Maybe they were wearing skinnies because it was raining? Mind you if they are, they need to toughen up, I had wet legs up to my knees from 1999-2006!

doadeer · 19/08/2021 20:13

I never see skinnies in young people it's loose jeans and crop tops. I see it in mid-30s onwards.

Everyone should just wear what they want...

I live opposite a 6th form college and this is absolutely the case. No skinnies.
GreyTS · 19/08/2021 20:18

I'm in a small rural town in Ireland so hardly cutting edge and all the teenage girls are wearing flares/baggy/high waisted jeans, haven't seen skinnies on anyone under 30 since Christmas......haven't worn them myself this year and I'm 43

FreekStar2 · 19/08/2021 20:21

Yep- my dd age 16, bought denim cargo pants from Urban outfitters this week- and the worst thing is- they are low waisted!! Nooooo!!! I do not want low waisted trousers to return!!!!! I'll be leaving those to the teens this time and stubbornly hoiking my waistband over the muffin top whilst dd rolls her eyes at my middle- aged mom fashion!

TooWicked · 19/08/2021 20:25

I don’t see very many women of my age wearing skinny jeans in this area, slim jeans yes - like the ones pictures above but skinnies, no.

All the younger women/teenagers are wearing really baggy, high waisted jeans.

As my skinny jeans have faded or worn and been put in the charity bin bag, I’ve replaced them with cigarette jeans like these or trousers. I feel as if I look quite dated in skinnies these days,

TeacupDrama · 19/08/2021 20:28

I don't think I have ever been anywhere where 97%of women are wearing same style not even a school with uniform maybe 97%of nurses are in scrubs but everywhere Igo I see older women in everything from skirts to fashionable trousers and jeans to beige elasticated waist types. Younger women wear fashionable things but sometimes just comfy like tracks and leggings as well as business suits jeans dresses etc and middle aged women are the same plenty of people are still wearing skinniest but not as many as two years and go when you rarely saw a different cut of jeans, you saw different cuts in formal and casual trousers

withlotsoflove · 19/08/2021 20:51

I think they are still ‘ a look’
All Saints have loads.
I’m enjoying skinny flares at 50.

BeautifulBirds · 19/08/2021 21:04

Where can I buy these baggy, wide leg jeans?!! I loathe skinnies.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/08/2021 21:31

Monki Yoko are really wide. Lots of colours.

Who is saying they're over, apart from people trying to sell a different shape. DD, my little Gen-Z.

According to her skinnies are for Millennials. In a different conversation she recently said "yeah, they were all old people, you know, those Millennials"...

Blessex · 19/08/2021 21:40

I have changed to baggies. No idea what I will do when boot season is upon us Confused

MoltenLasagne · 19/08/2021 21:42

I can always tell when I've reached the student area in Leeds because suddenly all the women are in high waisted baggy jeans and either crop tops or oversized jumpers /jackets.
