This business about skinny jeans being over?

I keep hearing it but I can't see any evidence.

Earlier this week I travelled almost the whole length of the District Line, from East London, through the City and West End out to Wimbledon and back, over the course of about 10 hours.

I'd say at least 97% of women, of all ages, from very young to not so young at all, were wearing either skinny jeans or very slim leg trousers. I saw one group of young women all wearing wide leg, ripped jeans and a few wearing joggers. That it. This would be a mixture of tourists, Londoners going about their business, working people and people out for the evening.

I had coffee in the City, lunch in a West End restaurant, drank in a swanky West London pub, attended a sporting event. Honestly skinnies everywhere.

I looked because I'd worn a skirt rather than skinny jeans and it was raining, so wide leg ones are horrible. Didn't see many skirts either Grin Certainly very little evidence that no one's wearing skinnies any more.

@Hardbackwriter You've articulated what I was getting at perfectly.

Slipperfairy · 20/08/2021 10:36

And it doesn't matter what you wear at 19, cos you look great in anything. If I wore what a 19yr old is wearing, I'd look OK... until an actual 19yr old stood next to me.

Dancingonmoonlight · 20/08/2021 11:01

and nor for that matter are any other style of jeans

That’s not really true.
I found an old bag of jeans in the attic. It had e everything from 7 for all mankind to Warehouse and there is no doubt that many of them looked very very old fashioned.

Growing up I remember people wearing Wranglers and at that time, they looked old fashioned too. That shape is probably back but with smaller cut pockets, lighter wash etc.

Jeans that are not current can age a person instantly.

countrytown · 20/08/2021 11:08

The one thing I've actually noticed is less jeans. Seen lots of youths in cycling shorts & joggers. I've not worn jeans for about a month when I used to wear them daily.

I remember when everyone used to wear those awful stretchy black trousers to go out in!

countrytown · 20/08/2021 11:09

They have been over for 2 years. A few middle aged women are clinging on- think of those who wore animal print the the 1970s and were still wearing them in 1995.

That's rubbish

SirenSays · 20/08/2021 11:20

I don't understand why everyone is ditching skinnies for mom jeans that give everyone a fupa and a flat ass.

countrytown · 20/08/2021 11:21

I think fupas are in 😆

Animal print during Glam was cool as fuck. I’m 57 and don’t wear them anymore. I’m still cool as fuck. Ageist shite.

MyFloorIsLava · 20/08/2021 11:51

That’s proper dedication to fashion you’ve got going on there

If you could see me in real life you would know how not dedicated to fashion I am 😂 I held onto my wide leg jeans for ages, but there was a long time when the only jeans that didn't look horribly outdated were skinny jeans and they were okay, plus practical with small DC doing lots of muddy puddle walks. But I never loved them, and when they completely wore out and I had to give in and buy new jeans, and there were lots of lovely wide leg styles in the shops it was a no brainer.

Fashion I am not! I am overweight and lazy. Today I am in a (probably horribly frumpy) Fat Face summer dress from god knows how many years ago. My standard outfit is jeans, a comic book t-shirt and trainers, which is basically how I dressed at 14 and 28 so probably won't ever change :)

Annasgirl · 20/08/2021 11:55

OP, it is not that skinnies are over - it is that they signify that you are no longer into fashion if you wear them. Like the women who wore blue eye shadow when I was a young child - they were the women that time forgot.

No one is saying you have to stop wearing skinny jeans - just as no one said women had to stop wearing the crinoline.

But to young girls (DD is 17 and had a summer job in a fashion retailer) skinny jeans are over.

It was cool in the 1970s as I said In i995 it was Bet Lynch

Kate Moss inspired leopard print coats for years on the high street. I think to most leopard print is now a neutral.

countrytown · 20/08/2021 12:20

I do think the skintight jegging look a la Kate Middleton looks very dated but that's also how she styles them. I think the narrow leg silhouette is still a thing.

Yeah but who wants to dress like a seventeen year old. Other than another seventeen year old. And who wants to copy their style. I certainly dont. 😂

My daughter is 24. She still wears them, as well as other styles of jeans, as do her counterparts. So not over for the mid twenty age range.

I don’t get why folks ge so upset of th thought of skinny jeans still being fashionable. Comparing them to blue eyeshadow and crinolines is mad.

The truth of the matter is Jean style varies right now, the shops are still full of skinnies and plenty still wear them, but they are no longer ubiquitous. Many other styles are also fashionable. It’s no longer a one horse race.

JaneJeffer · 20/08/2021 12:54

if you're old enough to remember it the first time round, you probably shouldn't wear it now.
What if it's your third go round on the flares? Grin

countrytown · 20/08/2021 12:57

Yeah tbh I don't think most 17 yr olds are fashion experts! I used to work in buying & plenty of friends in the industry, I can assure you skinnies are still popular at big retailers but as pp said there is now more choice.

Floisme · 20/08/2021 13:00

What I don't get about these threads is that there are still, as has been noted, plenty of skinny jeans in the shops. The change is that a) there are now lots of other styles too, which I assume we can all agree is a good thing? And which means b) that skinnies no longer have a monopoly, are no longer the default fashion look and may well at some point fall off the radar before coming around again in a decade or so. But as posters insist they don't care about fashion (well I do, but then I'm irredeemably shallow) what's the problem?

Dancingonmoonlight · 20/08/2021 13:01

I don’t think they are upset. People are just pointing out that they are not fashionable.

Just because they are in the shops doesn’t mean they are fashionable. My aunt has worn tapered chinos and a striped rugby style top daily for decades. She appears to have no problem obtaining them. It doesn’t mean they are fashionable.

They clearly are fashionable if so many peoooe are still wearing them. 😂😂😂

My 70+ aunt has a number of friends all wearing beige chinos and striped tops who think they are the height of fashion or ‘modern’ as she calls it 🤣🤣🤣

countrytown · 20/08/2021 13:08

Well it does because it means they are a trend & are popular. Does that mean they are the coolest trend or the height of fashion? No.

Hardbackwriter · 20/08/2021 13:12

Surely it also depends which shop we're talking about?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2021 13:15

Skinny jeans are on the ‘declining’ section of the fashion trend cycle. They have been a very long trend, what is known as a mega trend.

They are still obtainable and wearable. The ‘early adopters’ are rejecting them. Ultimately the look worn by the early adopters will become mainstream and skinnies at some point will disappear. No trend lasts for ever.

They won’t become ‘classics’ as the style is too extreme. Straight legs are the classic version.

15 years lecturing fashion history and fashion cycles…,.

They will go at some point.

countrytown · 20/08/2021 13:15

well look at asos & their style options

boyfriend (54)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2021 13:18

But Asos has a huge target market.

None in Urban Outfitters and very few in Monki
