Dh hates my new dress, what do you think?

Hello,

New dress, sale bargain, cosy, doesn't crease(!). Asked dh for an option on which size was the most flattering, but he really dislikes it.

Now I dress for myself, dh is lovely (and to be fair I did ask his opinion) but it's given me a bit of a wobble.

It mainly for work, in a kind of chuck on and not worry about. Dh massively prefers my other dresses. I'm an hour glass size 16, and a lot of my dressed are more fitted, but I think they look a bit dated now.

I though this was an on trend and flattering day dress, but now I'm doubting myself.

Tags still attached, it can go back.

What do you think? I'm late 40s.

The fit is very poor. Send it back.

MichonnesBBF · 19/08/2021 19:19

Sorry, not flattering at all, it needs pulling in at the waist and a better bra where they are lifted up a bit more to show the actual figure you have.

When you look at the photo what do you see? Because If you are comfortable then none of our opinions really matter.
You have a lovely figure by the way.

Debetswell · 19/08/2021 19:19

If it was a bargain and you like it then put a wide belt in fuschia or orange to accentuate your waist and break up the black.

Viviennemary · 19/08/2021 19:19

It certainly isn't flattering. It isn't absolutely dire but there isnt anything remotely nice or attractive about it. Give it a miss.

PrimeraVez · 19/08/2021 19:19

Everything is off about this - the colour, the sleeves, the shape, the belt. It does nothing for your (fab) figure - send it back!

BringMeTea · 19/08/2021 19:19

Oh crossposted... yeah save that money!

Mrsjayy · 19/08/2021 19:20

It isn't doing anything for you it isn't sitting right . I'm with your dh.

Howshouldibehave · 19/08/2021 19:20

It’s too baggy and the belt is unflattering. Something more fitted (and well-fitting) would be better.

Mrsjayy · 19/08/2021 19:21

Wise decision sending it back,

KatyS36 · 19/08/2021 19:22

I'm giggling now, pondering whether to tell dh....... (I might never live it down though, 30 people came straight out and said you were right...)

Goodthings · 19/08/2021 19:23

No sorry it looks like a bad overall/uniform.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/08/2021 19:23

@Wallabyone

I don't think it's you-it's the dress! It's a bit loose and harsh, the sleeves are too long and the thin belt isn't great.
This! It wouldn't flatter anyone. With an hourglass figure, there must be loads of dresses that look great on you. You can definitely do better.

I also think that that on-the-knee length in a straight skirt is quite dated, tbh. Knee length is coming back, but with more volume than that.

Jasmine11 · 19/08/2021 19:23

Eek sorry it's not flattering at all. I think you have to be quite skinny to look good in those kind of sack dresses and even then they are borderline.

StrongerOrWeaker · 19/08/2021 19:23

It looks comfy 😁

urbanbuddha · 19/08/2021 19:23

It's not working for you.

LemonRoses · 19/08/2021 19:24

You could do much better.

ErinAoife · 19/08/2021 19:24

I don’t like the dress, top look like a polo shirt, bottom is too baggy and the sleeves are too long, not flattering at all. You have a lovely figure so don’t hide it

paddlingon · 19/08/2021 19:24

Glad you are sending it back.
It really does your figure no favors.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/08/2021 19:25

I'm with DH too, it's just not flattering.

Byheckythump · 19/08/2021 19:25

On MN, whatever you ask the answer is normally massively divided. So well done OP, you win Mumsnet tonight. Smile

SmileyClare · 19/08/2021 19:26

You could try it with a wider belt in a different colour? Tan or red belt maybe. Your waist needs to be clinched in higher.. Or it might look better with no belt and a bit shorter?

It looks too big as well in places. Just a bad fit for you.

Faevern · 19/08/2021 19:29

There’s a reason it was a sale bargain, it wouldn’t look good on most people, save your money and be secretly relieved that your DH gave an honest opinion.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/08/2021 19:31

It looks simultaneously too big (sleeves and top) and too small (around the waist, probably because the seam is just below your natural waistline because it's actually too big for you). I think your colouring would suit dark blue or a khaki far better than black and the material doesn't appear to 'flow'.

If anything (and I don't like to sound unkind, but I know it could feel like it), it looks as though you're a 20-22 with spindly little arms, not an hourglass 16. Which I'm sure you aren't.

A more flattering version would be in a fluid fabric, short wider sleeves with a turnup cuff and able to be tucked at the waist rather than coming out in a tent shape.

You've got a good DH there in that he has been brave enough to say that it really isn't right for you - and he's right.

BiscuitLover09876 · 19/08/2021 19:33

I'm sure it's lovely and comfy but I think it makes you look bigger than you are. Sorry!
