Anyone else tired of high waists?

ConfusedParticle · 05/08/2021 16:14

I liked them for a while years ago, probably because they were a welcome variation, but it seems now almost everything is high waisted, whether we like it or not.

It doesn't suit everyone, regardless of body type, so I wish there were more choices between low, mid and high available, especially with trousers.

I have a slightly short torso, so anything super high almost touches my breasts. It isn't flattering and makes me feel like a balloon, even if I am slim. Ive been searching for straight cargo style trousers for months but all of them have super high waists, even jeans aren't backing down a bit yet.
I can't get a sleek look at all, with so much fabric billowing around my gut like that. And since I don't like tight fitting clothes (except for my leggings) it always makes me feel bunched up and fussy.

I know it's all just trends and whatnot, but this one aint for me.

Tell me im not alone! Grin

@Leftbutcameback

I find them really uncomfortable and it doesn’t help my IBS either.
This with big jingly jangly bells on!

I do not need something cutting me in half across my poor bloated belly. Give me a nice mid/low rise I can bloat over the top of (hidden by loser tops)!

ZealAndArdour · 05/08/2021 19:45

I’m a curvy hourglass shape with big boobs.

I really like a very slim fitting racer back style vest with a pair of Oxford Bags style trousers and a belt. My small waist finally gets its moment in the limelight without having to revert to overtly feminine body con type dresses. I do have a belly, but it doesn’t really concern me to try and pretend it’s not there.

For me, long and wide legged trousers with high waists have always been my favourite thing to wear. There’s no hassle or readjustment needed, and they’re effortless and comfortable.

TableNiner · 05/08/2021 19:48

I cannot wear high or even mid waist.

I think they elongate the leg and can be very flattering. Personally I’m not convinced by the ‘big nappy’ look they give even the slimmest of people when they are also a looser fit but accept that is the trend (thanks Kim K).

They would be flattering on me as I have very short legs relative to my torso. But last time I tried I went for a meal and ended up vomiting in the restaurant toilet such was the restriction around my stomach. Higher rises are like a corset for me. I’d definitely take the muffin top.

All we ask is for a little more choice. The problem is that ALL the bottoms are a high rise, as all the shops eventually channel what’s in fashion. Take Next. I have some jeans I got about 7 years ago which sit pretty low. There is nothing pretty low in Next now.

They keep saying low rise are coming back which I think could be true (what with all the other 90s trends) but it’ll take years for that to filter through to the high street.

I also find low rise are normally only available in a skinny fit. Where are the lower rise straight trousers and jeans?

Coogee · 05/08/2021 19:51

hidden by loser tops

That’s a new one. You mean the babydoll type things?

Salanda · 05/08/2021 19:59

I love them! But my waist is my best feature (small waist and bigger bum and hips) so I like to be able to define it with a high waist and tops tucked in. However - it IS frustrating when it seems like there’s no variety in the shops. It’s like when you could only really get skinny jeans. More variety so everyone can find nice clothes that fit, please!

Ha bloody ha Smile
bizboz · 05/08/2021 20:11

Hate them. I am short torso, long legs and they look stupid on me and feel uncomfortable. I don't like low-rise either as they just fall down! I found some ok slim, mid-rise jeans in Next.

RaspberryThief · 05/08/2021 20:16

I hate them too. I'm a 5'2" hourglass with boobs and they are so incredibly unflattering and make me feel extremely matronly. There has to be a third way that is neither crotch-skimming nor providing the wearer with an unwanted spare tyre!

DietrichandDiMaggio · 05/08/2021 20:33

@Hollyhead

So envious of all you long waisted people. Another high waist hater here - it’s so disconcerting sitting down and the waistband of your trousers touching your boobs. And I’m an 8-10, they make me look at least a 12-14.
This is what I find too. I have a pretty flat stomach, but jeans that have the waistband up by my ribs make me look like I have a pot-belly. I don't want super low waistbands, just ones that don't go higher than my belly button.
lalaloopyhead · 05/08/2021 20:42

Im too short in the body for anything too high, but I need something high enough to hold everything in...after 3CSs my low waist days are well and truly gone!
My 19 yr old daughter is all about low waisted jeans now...in fact half her clothes look like something I owned in the 90's.

Leftbutcameback · 05/08/2021 20:46

On a related topic I am currently trying to iron the waistband on a pair of trousers to make it bigger! I've realised that in lockdown my weight has moved to my waist. And now only my low waisted trousers still fit - much more forgiving!

PieonaBarm · 05/08/2021 21:02

@SummaLuvin

I am all for high waists and absolutely dread the return of low rise, though I have started to hear/see whispers that teenagers, gen z, are starting to pick them up again, could be good for you as trends typically start with the young.
Oh no. This means I need to panic buy high waisted jeans in 3 sizes just in case!
woodhill · 05/08/2021 21:21

So a bit of a Noel Edmonds - house party look or Simon Cowell for some of you?

crackofdoom · 05/08/2021 21:23

Do

crackofdoom · 05/08/2021 21:30

^I didn’t write that. Evidence of iPhone demonic possession 😬

RampantIvy · 05/08/2021 21:34

@Floisme

Sorry that was uncalled for Blush But I had to put up with waists at arse crack level for years and years, so I'm loving this while it lasts.
Grin I'm with you on low rise jeans and trousers. They are great for shorter people, but not for me. Most "high rise" jeans and trousers come up to my belly button.
ZealAndArdour · 05/08/2021 21:34

@woodhill

Nah, I’m talking about these kind of looks…

@ZealAndArdour

Yes, it just came to me especially the French and Saunders sketch😀

DingoDollar · 05/08/2021 21:41

No. I'm all for them. But then a high waist is the most flattering on my body type.

It's going to take a lot for me to untuck my tops and lower my waistbands. Most flattering look for my figure.

DingoDollar · 05/08/2021 21:47

Feel like I read so many replies with people saying they're the same figure as me but hate them as they're unflattering?

I'm 5"3. Size 10/12 hips and thighs but size 8/10 waist and 32F boobs.

Skinny high waist jeans (Levi 721s are my fave thanks to advice on here!) with a tight, tucked in, top is as good as I've ever seen my post-baby figure look!

OhTheTastyNuts · 05/08/2021 22:21

Vera Moda do low and mid rise jeans. But they are mainly skinnies.

Diesel Jeans are usually low rise too.

I'm slim with long legs and a short body. I find high waisted jeans so restrictive! And I can't tuck tops into them because it means the top is tucked in directly below my boobs. Not good!!

Leftbutcameback · 05/08/2021 22:25

@ohthetastynuts thanks for sharing some brands - my local shop stocks Vera Moda so I might even be able to try some on!

dft6432 · 05/08/2021 22:47

Diesel Jeans are usually low rise too.

Thanks for this, finally found some jeans that I'd actually buy. Perfect.

StarlightLady · 06/08/2021 06:01

OP, you are not alone. I don’t want an almost bra skimming belt line that makes me feel cut in half when l sit down.

The term high waist is a bit of a misnomer too. My waist is certainly not located where a lot of trousers and jeans now sit.
