Converse with cocktail dress at black tie dinner?

I expect to get flamed for this, but I’ve got a work black-ish tie event coming up (for staff only) and I I’m going to wear a royal blue knee-length 60s cocktail dress. Can I get away with wearing a pair of gold Converse hi-tops with this? I do think it’d look good, but perhaps not appropriate. What other alternatives are there to heels with a dress like this?

I don’t wear heels ever and I’ve been to loads of black tie events. For summer I’d probably go for strappy sandals but if it’s raining or not very warm my go to is dolly shoes. You can usually get them in synthetic materials in different colours from new look, primark, H&M etc. Just watch the sizing on new look shoes as I find they run big.

those are lovely -sadly sold out in both OPs size and mine!!

The lilac ones are good for a summer black tie do and will fit with the sixties look of your dress.

If you insist on wearing flat shoes! A heel will look better. Just don’t wear faux orange suede block heels. They will kill the look!

I don't know the company (I looked for similar to a suede style I have that are easier to wear with high arches than a non-beribboned ballet flat) but these are made out of recycled plastic bottles and would look elegant and should be comfortable

Ballet pumps? Mary janes?

ChequerBoard · 18/07/2021 16:51

If you're comfortable in your Converse, and like the way they look with your dress, then why the hell not?

Don't get pressured into buying heels you won't be comfortable in and will never wear again.

@BabCNesbitt

A size 4, with mid-forties veiny feet and a ridiculously high instep.
Ah, no good, I'm a six! Shame, because I've loads of pretty shoes going unworn.

I love the idea of your initial look. Gold converse? I never knew. With a cocktail dress Shock I will steal this idea shamelessly as it sounds amazing!

Don't know about the actually black tie dinner. But I wish you were daring enough to do it and report back Wink (easy for me to say though - especially as I never been invited to a BTD!)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I’m inclining towards a pair from ASOS (these ones: www.asos.com/prd/22945349?acquisitionsource=pasteboard) but could do with some reassurance that the heels aren’t too massive for a black tie do.

@HoliHormonalTigerlilly I do like that last pair you posted from Amazon! I’m tempted to get those anyway Grin

@Peacelillyhippy Oh, I’ll definitely wear it like that sometime! Just perhaps not on this particular occasion!

I would wear brogues. Knee length dress and brogues is my typical office wear pre-WFH.
