Converse with cocktail dress at black tie dinner?

I expect to get flamed for this, but I’ve got a work black-ish tie event coming up (for staff only) and I I’m going to wear a royal blue knee-length 60s cocktail dress. Can I get away with wearing a pair of gold Converse hi-tops with this? I do think it’d look good, but perhaps not appropriate. What other alternatives are there to heels with a dress like this?

It may or may not, depends on the dress & the wearer. I certainly think some of the alternatives on this thread are much worse.

Sounds like a gorgeous dress! Orange block heels would work, or 60s style flats. Deffo brogues too, especially if they're delicate as opposed to big chunky ones. I wear a lot of 60s dresses for going out out, and have vintage silver kitten heels (surprisingly comfy for a few hours... and not walking loads btwn stations etc), and block-heeled black patent mary janes too.

BUT if you're into a 90s riot grrrl look, chunky brogues will look great with a 60s dress (think Huggy Bear).

@Myshitisreal

Going against the grain, I wore glittery converse to a wedding with a very fancy purple dress. I've actually never had so many compliments, despite All the poo-pooing here. I guess it depends on your audience and confidence/style.
THIS. If you feel amazing in it, that's what matters.

@Maireas

Something like this? More of a sixties vibe
where are these from? Gorgeous.

@BabCNesbitt

Thanks for all the suggestions! I’m inclining towards a pair from ASOS (these ones: www.asos.com/prd/22945349?acquisitionsource=pasteboard) but could do with some reassurance that the heels aren’t too massive for a black tie do.
Those are lovely.

@B1rdinthebush

ASOS have got lots of flat shoes in non-leather that would would be perfect. Something like these: www.asos.com/prd/23078957?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

A flat pointy number would work really well with a 60s inspired dress and look super chic.

Exactly the kind of shoe I was thinking of! Perfect style for 60s cocktail.

If you had the time/budget I also love the idea of women in tux a la 70s Lauren Hutton

dementedma · 25/07/2021 20:34

I have to wear black tie/cocktail for work do’s quite often and as a not very feminine woman, struggle with footwear. However, DMs/converse would be massively frowned on and cause embarrassment.
i go for low heeled sparkly scrappy sandals. comfy, but smart enough to to pass muster

Donationwitheverypack · 25/07/2021 20:40

This is why I always go for a long frock, flat shoes are OK then IMO.

I actually don't hate the idea of gold converse with a cocktail dress. If you're the sort of person who can pull it off, it will look good. My concern would be a no trainers dress code though

The shoes you already have sound perfect for the dress, orange and blue are complementary colours
