Naff things in other people's fashion sense

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's fashion sense?

OP posts:

Ahhhh now I’ve seen the overcontouring in less affluent schools/colleges. The more affluent have a much more natural look.

XingMing · 26/06/2021 20:36

Style and beauty should not be about class or money. S&B has f*ck all to do with class or money. You have it, or you don't so it is far far more meritocratic and ruthless than spending £3,000 on a Chanel bag. That just proves you can read that a Chanel bag is the epitome of style, and buy one.

I adore clothes, and fashion, and seeing what people wear. At 65, I won't wear most of it, because the world only needs to see what I choose to display, but I hope it's not dull and beige. I look awful in beige.

Dogmum40 · 26/06/2021 20:37

Oh god this really isn’t the thread for me!

I have 2 tattoos

Have gel over my own nails (my nails snap and the file off gel is so strong so that’s why I do it is gel allowed on here?)

I wear fat face (and other brands) when not at work

My mum has a yellow joules jacket

I own one black and one brown handbag

I still wear skinnies - I have a huge arse so a lot of other jeans like high waste and girlfriend jeans look absolutely terrible on me and boyfriend jeans just swamp me as I’m short

I work in conservation and farming so my daily work clothes are my skinny jeans with my wellies and outdoor coat ( maybe even a padded gilet )

I’m clearly a huge fashion victim so sorry everyone 😂

But fashion is essentially anthropology. I lecture in this.

Middle class tend to like natural fibres and no visible labels
Upper class don’t care.

Presumably lots of other parts of the syllabus are different from "Class: A View from Middle England" by Jilly Cooper.
Or have things really not moved on?

And what constitutes "upper class" these days?

Jahebejrjr · 26/06/2021 20:47

Ok @LolaSmiles. That all makes perfect sense Confused

LaMarschallin · 26/06/2021 20:47

Since "Class" was published in 1979, I meant to add.

soooooooG · 26/06/2021 20:51

Cheap looking fabrics.

Not necessarily cheap clothes but cheap fabrics and badly cut. I actually have some super cheap M&S and Primark t-shirts that look great as they're a nice fabric with a good cut. But especially shirts that aren't well made.

I think it's because in this particular school there was status attached to having the expensive makeup palettes. I can't believe some teenagers spent that much money on makeup, but it was a big deal. There was a lot of make up worn to create the 'natural look', but natural in that you still look like you've got a face full of makeup on.
Even with colleagues, the heavy makeup look wasn't badly done and it didn't look tatty, but it was very much in the image of the instagrammers.

Growing up, I didn't see people doing what some on here have stereotypically decided is working class style. I'd have been laughed at at school if I came in looking like I'd glitter-bombed my face.

The very affluent people I know don't care for designers, or when they do it's good quality and quite understated. Then there's people who are comfortable to affluent who don't care for heavily labelled clothing. Then there's people I know who care greatly about being seen with the designer bags, the chanel sunglasses etc. They're not working class, probably just into middle class but because they live in one area they have more disposable income than someone of similar wealth who lived in a different area and spent more on their house. It's different priorities.

It's why I find some of the 'you're all awful and hating on working classes' says more about the people on the crusades than people sharing their opinions on trends.

AgathaAllAlong · 26/06/2021 20:58

I'll give you mine, it sounds like some of you would be distraught by the sight of me. Today I wore: a white stuff skirt with black leggings underneath, an m&s fleece, and a pair of trainers. I've recently bought a neon pink flowery frilly dress and hair accessories to match. My toddler though always looks great. Grin

frumpety · 26/06/2021 21:00

I know of one person who has fillers who you wouldn't think had, they look so natural, not plumped or pouty, just her own lips but a fraction better.

I don't mind a bit of fakery on people, its often so obviously 'extras' that nobody thinks its real, thinking false eyelashes for example, its just a look chosen by some.

We accept certain levels of decoration in certain circumstances quite happily, think of hats or headgear at weddings, nobody could describe them as practical, they aren't going to keep you warm or dry, they serve no other purpose other than to decorate the person wearing them. Waits for the hat/headgear hate Grin

TableNiner · 26/06/2021 21:04

Too heavy foundation that doesn’t match skin tone
Stocky/muscly men in skinny jeans and too tight shirts like the Hulk
Overly checked/lumberjack shirts
Dungarees
Pop socks
Black bottoms with a naice bright coloured top
Shapeless formal workwear
VPL
Tights worn as leggings
Inadequate bras
Tops with lots of zips
Stripey highlights
Overly done hair
Baseball caps
Wedge sandals where the toes are falling off the end
White socks and black shoes or black socks and white shoes
Uggs

EveningOverRooftops · 26/06/2021 21:07

Looking in pain, uncomfortable and unable to function because of your clothes as an adult is really naff.

LolaSmiles · 26/06/2021 21:10

AgathaAllAlong
Variety is the spice of life though. A few of us have said we do things that others consider naff on this thread. The difference is we (and I'm including you because I read your reply as light hearted) don't get defensive about the fact some people might not love our dress sense, and know we will find things naff that other people like.

I'd rather have leggings and flip flops on every day than dress using some of the tips on the 'how to look classy' threads. Give me a fleece over a crisp white shirt any day. Grin

Sleepingdogs12 · 26/06/2021 21:10

Someone just mentioned VPL. I really don't like Visible Thong Line under skirts and trousers, way worse then the classic VPL.

IsThePopeCatholic · 26/06/2021 21:27

Designer clothes with logos and names eg. LV, Gant, CD, RL. Very vulgar.

Shocking, I don't spend that much myself and wouldn't have spent it on my own dds at that age.

I think the contouring look may have died down a bit now?

GreenBlood · 26/06/2021 21:30

I absolutely love Joe Browns. The dresses I bought from there and the winter coats get so many compliments....even from two very hard to impress sisters of mine, I'm very tall and slim though and I think their clothing suits me.

Sipied · 26/06/2021 21:41

This and the other home decor naff thread is the middle class mocking working class, or/and the type often referred to as "new money"

meatester · 26/06/2021 21:46
@LST

And that's why it's naff.
People with tattoos and lots of piercings think it makes them look speshul and interesting.

It doesn't
Hahah this.

(And I have some mistakes tattoos on my back. What a twat I was

LolaSmiles · 26/06/2021 21:46

One was £40 for a set of nude eyeshadow! £40! For nude eyeshadows, for a child barely in their teens.
Shock

It was me who was given an education. It never crossed my mind that 13 year olds would be contouring. When I was 13 I was applying a poorly matched matte foundation on with my fingers. Grin

woodhill · 26/06/2021 21:53

Or borrowing my dms stuff. I had Rimmel and Miners or. Constance Carol

woodhill · 26/06/2021 21:54

Yes I wouldn't pay £40 now for myself and dds would be lucky to get Avon or Boots 17.

More money than sense

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/06/2021 22:07

This is such an interesting thread!

Personally I’d not be in the least bit offended if someone mentioned something here that was a popular part of my wardrobe. I’m comfortable with my style (not my weight at the moment mind, and would likely take offense to someone mentioning that). Seriously though, who cares? If you’re happy with your clothes and style it really shouldn’t matter. Clothes are fun. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having an opinion on what you like and dislike either. The world would be an insufferably boring place if we all liked the same things.

KillingMeDeftly · 26/06/2021 22:08

My pet hate is a sensible black handbag that is clearly worn with every outfit

You could be sent to the Tower for suggesting the Queen is naff!!Grin

Thewiseoneincognito · 26/06/2021 22:21

I forgot one BIG pet hate and that’s dirty accessories. Dirty scuffed handbags, scuffed shoes, dirty sunglasses, dirty glasses, dull jewellery. I spot it instantly and cast my judgement within the following microsecond.

Do people not realise you can wash your eyewear with fairy liquid? Honestly for some they’d think Jesus had cured their eyes, the haze would lift instantly. Fairy liquid will clean your jewels too.

Aldi baby wipes will polish up your shoes and bag.
