Is it see- through, @PickAChew? Nice colour and style. Where's it from?

ramarama · 31/05/2021 15:23

of course the look has lasted - dresses are comparatively very cheap AND they fit easily over lockdown weightgain. Also very comfortable, after a year of stretchy jogging bottoms. It's a win win

Cherrysoup · 31/05/2021 15:25

I go nowhere bar the yard. We all dress in yard boots/holey jods. Occasionally one of super glamorous young women fly in wearing skin tight outfits on their way out somewhere, but never seen the floaty white outfits.

SunshineCake · 31/05/2021 15:27

When I was an older teenager living in the north every other woman and some would wear a beige trench coat with a scarf, colourful, paisley, thread through the shoulder straps.

Then down south a few years ago every 16-25 year old woman had long blonde hair, straightened to the nth degree.

I picked the fabric up in a localish fabric shop. It needs a nude bra but duesnt give everything away. The pattern is a hack of this dress. shop.fibremood.com/en/product/459-jane-dress-pdf-pattern

This has been pretty much my uniform for the past 30 years. Although late 80s wore with DM boots, then converse in the 90s, maybe clogs here and there as well ( still own a lovely pair of beige suede clogs) now it’s white Nikes or Birkies.

HaveringWavering · 31/05/2021 15:31

Are people wearing actual trainers rather than canvas converse/ Dunlop/ superga type things? I find those rub my heels and the soles are too flat and unforgiving. I do wear floaty dresses but usually with Merrell type “activity sandals”.

OverByYer · 31/05/2021 15:32

I’m hoping the ‘All Saints ‘ cargo pants and vest tops makes a return them I’ll be in my element

Maireas · 31/05/2021 15:33

Thanks, @PickAChew, it looks just the job.

hitsvilleuk · 31/05/2021 15:35

I think I've still got some silk cargo pants from the "All Saints" look

RickiTarr · 31/05/2021 15:49

@SkintSingleMother

Resurrected from c. 1992, it will never die because it was undead three years ago.
I was thinking the same; It’s a three decade long look, and some people never totally dropped it. I like the nostalgia value of it.
Mummyoflittledragon · 31/05/2021 15:56

I love this look too. I was toying with getting the denim jacket. I love wearing maxi dresses with trainers. So comfortable.

Sunnydaysarethebestdays · 31/05/2021 16:00

I am 5ft1 and a size 12/14. I really like the look but always thought I’d be too short/dumpy to carry it off so never tried. However seeing all the comments say it suits anyone, I’m now going to try!
Where is the best place to try dresses from? I have the white trainers already!

Serpenta · 31/05/2021 16:06

New Look is always good for these kinds of dresses. My tips would be avoid any large patterns and avoid anything too billowy.

ejhhhhh · 31/05/2021 16:18

I was only thinking yesterday as I went out in my version of the trend (floaty skirt, t-shirt, cord jacket in denim jacket style, Converse), how happy I am that this fashionable, and I will be wearing this look forevermore regardless. It beats short skirts, or heaven for bid shorts (which look horrendous on me) hands down for summer wear. Even summer trousers are very hit and miss, I find it difficult to get a pair that fit well, and jeans are just too hot. I'm happy with the trainers for now, comfort wins when it comes to footwear. I predict it won't be long before women stop wearing high heels full stop, they're ridiculous and so bad for your feet. The trainers will be replaced with Birkenstocks soon, as soon as I've painted my toenails. I could not care less if I look like everyone else, I'm comfortable and presentable, without looking middle aged, so I will wear the current summer uniform willingly.

Snog · 31/05/2021 16:19

I love a loose cotton dress in the summer, very cool to wear and forgiving of any tubbiness.

I find trainers a bit hot so I'm more of a sandals girl. I wore this dress today from H&M last year

Maireas · 31/05/2021 16:26

Is that cotton, @Snog?

MareofBeasttown · 31/05/2021 16:28

Quite a job to find one that is not polyester or does not have puff sleeves, though. They are all sold out! Clearly everybody has got up today and decided to buy one.

Snog · 31/05/2021 16:30

@Maireas yes pure cotton

Snog · 31/05/2021 16:37

I also have this pure cotton dress from this season at monsoon

@gagrag

As for trainers and dresses, don't we blame Lily Allen for this, not Lily James?

Neither, it was huge in the 90s as were trainers in general. I still have my teenage wardrobe of Nike Air Maxs.

I think we blame the girls from friends for long floral dresses with white pumps. They were wearing the look with or without a denim jacket while Lily James was at nursery.

They also layered the dress over a white t-shirt sometimes....

Staffy1 · 31/05/2021 17:07

I think floaty dresses with trainers look terrible. Dresses just don't go with trainers in my mind. Never been a fan of floaty dresses with or without trainers anyway. I'm old and unfashionable though.

Looubylou · 31/05/2021 17:11

I love it but I don't look right in it myself - wish I did.

RedcurrantPuff · 31/05/2021 17:12

I didn’t really wear this trend before the pandemic lol but I like it now. Got a denim jacket for my birthday last week.

Me too! I'd need to drop about 3 stone to wear them though so perhaps they could come back in for 2023?
